FYI to fiction folks (as I posted in another thread), I spoke with the grad advisor at FSU today. She said they've narrowed it down to a short list of 65 for fiction. So yeah, a long short list. Those of us who didn't make the cut will receive a letter in the next few days -- they mailed them out Friday.

She didn't know exactly when the final decisions would be made, but it's probably safe to assume that it'll be soon.

May be you should call them.. I donít know, but I just read on
Godfreyís blog:

"For those of you who just went in a panic to check your Texas State online status like I just did, don't get too excited (as I just did) if it congratulates you on being accepted to the grad college. I called the MFA program and the guy said that being accepted by the grad college doesn't mean you'll be accepted into the MFA program. Damn. He also said that written notification will be sent soon, but he couldn't tell me when."

If this is true, it's extraordinarily cruel.

Well, I thought that the way it worked was the graduate school would just hang on to your file until the program you applied to recommended your application for acceptance or rejection. *shrug* We'll see. What a horrible dirty trick if they "admit" you without "admitting" you.

What a bunch of jerks :-(. I'm holding a letter from Texas State that says they don't tell you anything until the department makes their recommendation. Why would they say yes and then go back on it? This is horrible. I'm gonna go drink/smoke myself to death now.

I'm retracting my previous post until I hear something certain.

Oh, common, odds are - you are admitted but the guy answering the phone was too cautious (or didnít know much) to promise anything to the guy who called him. I mean the guy from the blog... Chin up:)))) At this point I would be happy to be in your shoes, because I got so many rejections, I could marinate them instead of pickles:)

Re: [Raignn] pitt nonfiction [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
I sent an email this morning basically saying, thanks so much for the acceptance, and I'm interested in knowing the funding situation as I cannot even consider Pittsburgh without funding.

I'm in the same boat ... I called Pitt today. Out-of-state tuition runs $13,765 per semester. It goes up about 4 percent every year. They estimate cost-of-living at $14,000 a year. Assuming I don't work a job (who wants to do that?) by my math it's just under $128,000 for three-years ... I'm upset again ...

I'm in the same boat as you Upsetme. Is funding a lost hope where Pitt is concerned? So far I only know of one person with funding... I wonder how many others were offered something. OH well... I have six more schools I'm waiting on. Good luck to both of us!

I actually haven't heard a peep from my email which I sent Sunday morning. I told my good friend (who graduated from Pitt's program with full funding last year), now I'm just not calling out of spite ;-)

The best analogy I can give people not involved in this process for what it's like to get accepted to a great program without funding is is it's like going in for your yearly review at work and they give you a glowing review, big pat on the back... and no raise. Sure it makes you feel good and lets you know you're going down the right path, but really doesn't change a thing.

I know, I'm in the same boat - accepted to Pitt but no teaching assistantship. I just finished filling out the FAFSA. I hope it's not too late for that.

Still waiting to hear from U of Minnesota and Penn State, but it sounds like they already sent out their acceptances. Also waiting for University of Washington.

I'm really excited about Pitt though. I might just have to go into debt and work two jobs. Not exactly what I envisioned, but now that I'm in, I really want to go!

Re: [pasdechat] Stonecoast [In reply to] Can't Post

Pasdechat, I got the e-mail on Mon. around 3.30 EST. It's from David Smith and outlines my acceptance, their offer (admission comes with a TAship), and the class structure for my first year. It says I'll get a letter by snail mail, too, though I'm overseas so I might just get it around May. According to Seth's blog, JHU normally notifies by phone, but I'm thinking that since I'm overseas I got the e-mail instead. Dead excited one way or another.

It looks like someone else here has reported a waitlisting to JHU by post. My e-mail didn't say anything about their process, application numbers, etc., so I'm afraid nothing I've had to say here is really vital info. Just keep your head up and keep repeating "I'm not out till the letter's in hand".

Congrats to everyone this week. Even if you don't get in somewhere, if you can get through till next Mon. without that blood vessel in your brain exploding, I think you've achieved something. Good luck the rest of the way, guys.
