Re: [solange] Oregon etc. [In reply to] Can't Post

I just read this on Seth's Blog. Perhaps this was one of those "signs" I was talking about!

...Also, a friend of mine who's at Oregon currently says that the fiction folks are meeting today to determine their admissions, & perhaps poetry, too, so be on the lookout. :)

Good luck to everyone!

Re: [rlarson] Ugh... the waiting... [In reply to] Can't Post

NYU and Hunter are my two tops, and I've heard not a peep for fiction. I'm not holding my breath, but it's more because I've gone through a year of rejection already, and so I'm learning not to keep my hopes up, besides the mad mad voice that says "obviously, they'll have to take you one of these days."

If only New York wasn't such a hotspot, and I wasn't tied to it!

Re: [saramac] Oregon etc. [In reply to] Can't Post

Saramac,

I applied to Oregon State, but I honestly don't know much about the program. I just really want to live in Oregon and U Oregon is a long shot (of course, I still applied...I LOVE their program). I hear Corvallis is a nice town. I'm hoping that because nobody has listed it as a school they applied to, the chances are higher? Who knows... Anyone else apply there?

I'm wondering about Notre Dame. Did anyone receive an official letter of rejection yet? I know they started accepting people almost 2 weeks ago, but I haven't heard anything about it for a while. If we haven't received a letter of rejection yet, does that mean we possibly still have a shot? Man, I hope so.

Crummy,
I live in Eugene and absolutely LOVE it here. I won't live anywhere else and that's why I only applied to OSU and OU. I'm finishing my undergrad here at UO and have had a fairly positive experience. Corvallis is also a great town.
Best of luck to ya!

Thanks, Saramac. No matter what, I know I'll end up in Oregon someday (either for my MFA or after it), so maybe we'll meet someday. My husband and I were planning on moving to Portland before I started all of this MFA business. We've been there many times, and we're totally in love.

wait-listed [In reply to] Can't Post

so now i've been accepted for a master's program
rejected at Alabama
and wait-listed at Vandy

the entire spectrum of responses

realistically, what are the chances for someone on a waitlist?
should i just be thinking about other places, or hold on to a little hope?

If I were you, I would email Vandy to inquire about my position on the waitlist; also, ask them how often they admit folks off the waitlist. I'm sure they won't mind answering your question, esp. since you made their waitlist, which means they like your work.

Rejected at Michigan, wait-listed at Wisconsin. Just got an email from the director. They won't disclose how large the wait-list is or where I am on it.

Most places are more than willing to reveal that kind of information. Being wait-listed means that they consider you qualified for their program. There are more qualified candidates than available slots, that's all.

Too bad Wisconsin isn't one of those places. They've stated several times that they won't disclose this.

Hmm, that sucks. I guess I can understand their POV--they probably don't want people to assume that they'll be "next" if they are ranked at a certain spot. Most places revisit the waitlist and it's not uncommon to "re-rank" folks.

I think how a candidate reacts once being waitlisted is important too; it never hurts to write a brief yet sincere letter of interest once waitlisted. If the program ever returns to the waitlist, they'll remember your letter.

Re: [idreamincursive] wait-listed [In reply to] Can't Post

This is my second time applying to MFA programs. I can tell you NOT to give up if you've been wait listed! I was wait listed at Mills and not only did they eventually offer me a spot, they offered me a scholarship on top of it. So if you've been wait listed, it might even end up being better news that you hoped. Hang in there (everyone!).

Re: [chelbeewrites] wait-listed [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh, I ended up not going! That's why I waited a few years and reapplied to MFA programs. The scholarship was nice but not enough to avoid going into tens of thousands of dollars of debt above and beyond it. I also was accepted by phone to New England College at that time but didn't go for the same reason. Finally I figured out that maybe I should only be applying to programs I could actually afford to GO to! *smacks head a la I-coulda-had-a-V8*

Texas State [In reply to] Can't Post

I saw on one of the other blogs that someone got a rejection letter today from Texas State. I checked my status online and it said:

"Thank you for your interest in Texas State. You will receive written notification from the Graduate College regarding an admission decision within the next few days. If you have any questions, please e-mail the Office of the Graduate College at gradcollege@txstate.edu and include your Texas State ID (580072) or call (512)245-2581."

I have a feeling this means I'm rejected... Anyone heard of any acceptances from Texas State to date?

I don't think I've seen one rejection from Iowa posted yet. There have been a few phone call acceptances, but no rejections. This is encouraging, unless I missed something. Did I?

Hmm....I haven't heard anything. What blog was it on?

I applied, and I haven't received a rejection yet. If it's coming to me, it'll come soon, I guess, because I live in Houston, TX.

EEEEEAAAAAAAGHHHHH!!! *classic horror movie scream*

The only thing I heard from Texas State was this past Monday, the 25th, Michael Noll emailed me to request that I resend one of my recommendation letters since it got lost in the mail. My recommendor kindly did so.

And no rejection letter in the mail for me. Also, my status still says: Thank you for your application! Since all required documents for the Graduate College have been received, your application will be processed and you will be notified of the results as soon as possible.

I'm hoping they wouldn't be such a big bunch of JERKASSES that they'd make me resend a letter if they knew they were just going to reject me the next week.

I also live (permanent address) in Houston, but currently attend school in Dallas, so like the fellow above me, I think I would know pretty damn quickly if I was rejected. Mail from Houston or Dallas to Austin/San Marcos takes 1 day.

Not to intrude on your anguish, sicofelephants, but you make a good point- why would they ask you to resend your rec. if they weren't interested?

It's a good sign! Take heart!
