I read the post by that person who applied to 23 schools, and just thought I'd point out if she had ONLY applied to the 8 schools that all rejected her from March 10-25, she would have gotten in nowhere and might have felt kind of crappy about herself and her writing. But she applied to a massive number of schools and got into quite a few places -- I actually lost count. Anyway, while I wouldn't wish 23 applications on anyone, it's an interesting example of how this can be a total crapshoot, and that if you don't get into the schools you applied to this year, there's always hope for next year.
I'll leave with a quick example (I think I posted this sometime last year, as well). One of my writing mentors had a buddy who applied to Iowa. This guy was was a great writer who was well-published in lots of magazines, etc. His application was flat-out rejected. So the next year, he applied again -- with the exact same writing sample. He was not only accepted, but received one of the biggest fellowships Iowa gave out at the time. When they called to tell him the good news, he asked what happened; why had they accepted him with so much money this year, but rejected him the year before with the same sample? Apparently, they said something along the lines of, "We f--ked up."
Crapshoot, I'm telling you. This process does often recognize good writers for their brilliance and accept them, but for some of the other stars who find themselves sitting on the sidelines -- crapshoot. Don't take it personally.
