Stegner [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey everyone,

I looked back through the posts but couldn't see anything on this, maybe I missed something...Has anyone been rejected from Stegner yet? I know there's been a few acceptances in both genres. I tried calling the office today to ask if all acceptances had gone out, but all I heard was, "We're notifying April 1st" and "Didn't you get that in our email?"

I got one too, and I'm also in application limbo with them.

In Reply To
Did anyone else get an e-mail from UW asking them if they wanted to come early to get a jump start on summer classes?

I have no idea if I’m in or out, and this e-mail bothers me…. false hope… kiss the sky.

I'm guessing they sent this to everybody who'd applied, regardless of acceptance. From their site: Please note: Enrollment in UW Summer Quarter as a summer-only student does not constitute admission to the University of Washington.

So I didn't read too much into it.

Re: [Hamlet3145] Final(ish) Tallies [In reply to] Can't Post

In at Montana for fiction and the TA'ship is still up in the air, I'm reeeeally hoping that works out because I would be there in a heartbeat but that out of state tuition looks brutal...sounds like I would be about 40k in the red at the end of it. Despite all of that I'm really excited, call me crazy. Hamlet3145, what are these tricks you speak of? definitely curious about how much of a financial hardship it is for those without funding....Any insight would be great. P.S. I like the sound of softball and karaoke...

I got so fed up with Indiana (they said I would receive a letter last week and did not) so finally I called, spoke with Catherine Bowman, who said to email her, and she would email me back. She did, a nice note..of rejection (not surprised). But FINALLY I am going to make my decision:

IN:
Purdue
Hunter

Rejected:
Indiana
Iowa
Michigan
Syracuse
Michener
UI Champ-U

Waiting:
Irvine
St. Marys

I am not going to wait any longer on the California schools. Irvine won't happen, and I don't really care about St. Mary's. So looks like I'll be calling Purdue tomorrow...So glad to be done!! Even if I am headed to W. Lafayette, it feels like an oasis at this point.

Re: [lkearns] Final(ish) Tallies [In reply to] Can't Post

Ikearns,

RE: if one doesn't get funding, here are some tricks:

If you take only six credits in the fall and spring of your first year and fulfill a few other requirements (getting a Montana driver's license, registering to vote immediately upon arrival in Missoula, etc) you can get in-state tuition for your second year (which is about 1/3 of out of state).

Further, if you buckle down one semester and take 12 credits (that sounds like a lot, but you can count certain undergrad classes as electives, do independent studies and whatnot) you can then add 12 MORE credits of thesis on top of that (you don't have to do anything for thesis credits, you are just ostensibly working on your thesis). This sounds nuts, I know, but because Montana has a tuition cap at 12 credits, those 12 credits of thesis you tack on are then free. This trick alone knocks off about 25% of the tuition cost of a Montana MFA.

Another trick is that if you are able to get residency and the resulting in-state tuition and then land a three quarter time or higher full time position at the university (anything--even being a janitor), you can get a full tuition waiver after six months. (I ended up going this route myself and work full time in the IT department--not ideal, but I have very few credits left and am flat out unwilling to take out any more loans).

Those without a TA are given preference for summer teaching. This does not come with a tuition waiver, but hey, it's a job that doesn't involve a drive through and you get teaching experience and it pays about $3,000.

Finally, while the program is often considered a two year MFA, you can actually take up to five years if you want. Spreading the cost over multiple years (and making sure you get in-state by the 2nd year) can really lower the financial hardship.

Hope this helps,

--Jason

Hi Hamlet (or any current student who can speak to this),

Doesn't taking fewer than 12 credits per term disqualify one from receiving aid (loans) from the Federal Gov? This is what it says on the FAFSA website, but I am curious to know if it's actually the case, in other people's experience.

Thanks!

West Lafayette is not a bad place to be for a few years-- it's a pretty typical college town but not too far from Indy (an hourish). Although an alarming number of Purdue students have been disappearing or dying lately.... (and by alarming, I mean like three-- but still). Congrats on your acceptances and good luck!

Piratelizzy,

I bet what you read was for undergrad students. The rules are different for graduates. I don't know anyone who has ever taken more than 9 credits in a semester (unless they were tacking on thesis credits on top of their usual courses). At the University of Montana you are eligible for financial aid as long as you take 6 or more.

Sweet Jane,

UF has a very under appreciated program. I'm a UF undergrad and have taken 4 workshops with William Logan and am taking one now with Debora Greger. You will be very impressed with the program here. I'd put them in my top ten list. I didnt apply to UF bc they don't even consider accepting their undergrads but i got accepted to Columbia, waitlisted at JHU and Mich and havent heard from NYU VA and ND.

Good luck

How do you know that they fly them out for interviews? I mean, I, too, believe we should give up hope because of notifications by phone posted in several other blogs, but no one mentioned interviews anywhere. Where'd you find out about interviews? Just curious. Also, one bit of hope, I've seen nothing about stegner notifications in poetry. Has anyone heard, or no anyone who's been stegner-accepted in poetry this year?

Really? In poetry? I googled the crap out of "stegner poetry" and 100 other variations of it and found nothing citing acceptances for this year. I even Googled Eavan Boland and found out she had a few engagements at PSA and AWP this month which might have delayed poetry acceptances. I told myself to give up last friday.

last person to hear from Amherst? [In reply to] Can't Post

it is because my last name starts with a W? cuz i'm on the west coast? cuz i applied there last year as wel and they're teaching me some sort of lesson? why won't those jerks (please, read a far heavier more derrogatory swear word in place of jerks) at Amherst mail me my rejection? Or atleast call me back? or email? this is like some bullshit break up with someone who is too much of a baby to actually return your calls. jesus.

is anybody else still waiting to hear from them, or is this just my own personal circle?

Re: [skec7889] Indiana [In reply to] Can't Post

A student died in a car crash last week (in Chicago, but a Purdue student), another last weekend in Panama City car crash, and they just identified the missing Purdue freshman Wade Steffey. Seems he accidentally walked into a high voltage utility room of a dorm (that was left unlocked) and was electrocuted. He'd been missing since mid-Jan.
That's a lot of grief for one campus.
Truthfully though, I've heard of more bizarre deaths of college students since I moved to Indiana. There was a freak shooting of a Ball State student, a small plan crash of IU music students, the Taylor student crash and subsequent identity problem and now the Purdue freshman. Sad stuff.

Just got a letter today from Indiana saying that I'm on a "short waitlist" for fiction. Any stragglers this late in the game that would allow me to convince them to go elsewhere? :P Seriously though, anyone know anything about the situation? All I know is they're taking 6 for each genre, and that I'm going to have to learn to perform daily activities with my fingers crossed until I hear back...

Sorry about that blank post folks. Too much multi-tasking at once.

I just called good ol' Adam-the-admin at FSU, and he says that we should all get something in our mailboxes this week and if I haven't gotten anything by Friday (probably won't because I'm in California) to give him a call.

And to those in at Fresno, I grew up close to there, in an almost identical city and I can give you some info on the locale.

I haven't heard from Amherst either...at this point I'm assuming the rejection is on the way, since other people have been posting about interviewing for TAships and whatnot.

And I also got that email from UW, and it just seemed like university spam to me!
