yeah, that sounds high to me also-- I applied there, but I'm still not sure how many are in their program, so I'd be interested to know...

No, there aren't any deadlines for a while. Jargreen was just indulging in a little hyperbole.

The earliest application deadlines for traditional MFA programs in creative writing are in December.

Congrats on the waitlists!

Do we even know if UMich has even officially sent out acceptances for poetry? All I seem to remember seeing on here was that someone who had connections in the department had heard... am I wrong? or just in denial?

**I am consistently queasy all the time and can't focus on work, at all! **

Current status: 1 acceptance (GMU) with a pending TA interview but zero sense of what funding would be like otherwise, 1 UNCG phone call from Jim Clark (similar to what others received) with the ambiguous suggestion I got through some kind of first round of things, and 10 more programs who have been completely silent on all fronts.

congratulations! it's a good-sized program so your chances of getting in are reasonable. i didn't find out about speakeasy until hopperfu alerted me to it after i got accepted at cornell last year. it really does become a bonding experience in certain ways. a great classmate and two of my best friends have come out of fidgeting over acceptances and rejections last year.

Official poetry acceptances have been sent out, far as I can tell.

Miami University - Ohio [In reply to] Can't Post

I got a call yesterday evening from the head of the creative writing program at Miami University in Ohio. I've been accepted with a pretty rad TA. Although I haven't heard from any of the other programs, this somehow makes waiting more bearable because, no matter what else happens, I am definitely going to school in the fall WITH MONEY!!!

Yay. Now, onto black tea and homework.

Re: [kekaczor] Miami University - Ohio [In reply to] Can't Post

Unfortunately the program at Miami OH is a MA not an MFA, but congrats nonetheless. I currently live in Oxford, OH and it's kinda nice here. Very small town with a bunch of bars and places to eat. Other than that, though, there isn't much. The undergrad population is very snobby and full of rich kids, which becomes annoying. The closest anything is 25 miles away. Cincinnati is about 30 miles or so, which is nice. The writing faculty is good, however, so if you think you can make something out of a good faculty, good funding, and you make friends easily I say come to Oxford. PM me if you'd like any info, etc. Congrats!

I am having a rough time waiting out here in CA. I keep hoping that I’ll get a wake up call at 6am from some eastern time zone school. No luck.

I am in the same boat! At work I am visualizing my answering machine at home. Last week I was sick and stayed home one day and I was worried that they had called me at work! But I did get a call from one school last Sunday when I was cleaning the house --- the only moment when I wasn't expecting a call. But at least I'm excited to get home and check the machine. And, since we can't call them back on the same day, at least we get some time to think about our reaction before blurting out, "no effing way!"

The source could be incorrect, but I did get it here: http://www.pw.org/mag/0611/MFA%20Listing.htm

Florida State University
Tallahassee
english.fsu.edu/graduate/gradmain.htm
Genres: poetry, fiction
Size: 199
Core Faculty Includes: Teaching Assistantships, University Fellowships, the annual Florida State University Film and Literature conference, literary magazines Kudzu Review and Southeast Review, coursework and practical experience in editing

Maybe that number includes undergrads?

yeah it does. I had to call them during lunch to make sure they got all my recs. (I've had multiple docs go missing this year so I have learned to be careful.) the 199 number includes undergrads, MFAs and their Ph.D. in CW program also. hence the Jabba-esque number.

yes but I forgot about it b/c I didn't learn anything useful ;) All he said was that next week is spring break so don't expect any notifications next week. For what that's worth.

It's weird that the number is published, then. Most of the other numbers represent MFA students only. I'm actually relieved, though. I applied to FSU and was feeling a bit hesitant about it because of the size.

I had documents go missing last year, too. NMSU lost my whole packet, and I didn't realize until I called asking about my status, thinking that maybe I was on a waiting list or something. I think I cried for a day after that.

Re: [kiiro] Dear Speakeasy [In reply to] Can't Post

that sucks, I am sorry. I had the same thing happen to me last year and the lesson I learned is: Always follow-up (if you don't receive notification from the school) to ensure everything has been received. Because although most schools start reading your writing sample in spite of missing pieces of the bizarro puzzle that is the app, i.e., for all intents and purposes (to the committee) YOU, some schools might not-- or you might not get read til wildly after the deadline, which is a bad thing for funding.

Re: [strangelet] FSU/UMass [In reply to] Can't Post

Wouldn't it be amazing if each school could give you something like a two-week window in which to expect feedback one way or the other? It would really curtail my Crazy Time.

I know it seems to be getting late for any positive UMass feedback, but I'm working my connections to see if they're all done with handing out the acceptances. I work on campus, so I'm really tempted to just walk over there and demand results. Except that would be awkward. And I'm awkward enough without engineering such situations.

Well it turns out the assistant director of the program is at the AWP Conference for the rest of the week...we might have to sit tight. There's not really anyone to even ask right now. I'll share any information I receive in the future. Time to go home and check the mail.
