Hi Strangelet, I heard from Greensboro about a week and a half ago, Jim Clark called and said that although he couldn't admit me officially yet, ("It's a lengthy admissions process here at Greensboro") he wanted me to know that they liked my application and to tell me about their funding. He said that because their funding is a bit low compared to other schools ($10,000), he wanted to contact some applicants and give them a heads-up so that they don't accept other schools' earlier offers. I heard from Purdue yesterday. They called in the afternoon and apologized for calling on a Sunday. They did say that they read about a hundred apps this year and are only accepting four, so I feel special--even though I was aware that that was designed to make me feel special, and so added a grain of salt to it.

In response to some of the posts on liveable stipends: do you think $10,000 a year is enough?

Unless you are especially frugal, I don't think $10,000 a year is enough to live on. Neither, it appears, does the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which describes $9,800 a year for a one-person household as a poverty guideline.

Having said that, I think 10K a year is a great opportunity for someone who wants to get an MFA. You may have to get a part time job or borrow a few thousand dollars in order to make ends meet, but I think it's really saying something for a school to give free money to creative writing students.

I was just accepted to George Mason for Non-fiction. No word on funding. Anyone know how the program is?

YEAH ! Good for you. This is one school I really wanted to hear form.
I was told last week that final decisions were made (fri) and they would notify by March 1.

edit: So I just looked online

"Your application for the Creative Writing (MFA) program has been carefully reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Massachusetts Boston. I regret to inform you that you have not been selected for admission to the program. Your official letter has been mailed. You have our best wishes for successful pursuit of your future endeavors."

And it's just a stinkin' invite to hear Columbia MFA writers read at some NYC bar on the first Thursday of every month.

I'm in for poetry too! The email said that I'll receive a phone call tomorrow. What kinds of questions do I need to ask?

I'm in complete shock...this was definitely one of my top choices.

I'm sorry, MrsRiley... I know it was your top choice. I hope you get admitted to another program that you find you like even more than you thought you would UMass. I recommend a funny movie -- that helped me when I got rejected from Arizona. I would suggest Little Miss Sunshine.

Sorry to hear that. UMass was originally my top choice as well. I haven't heard one way or the other yet, but I already moved it down my list last week.

I don't even know/remember how to check my online application status, so I'm going to have to wait until the letter. C'est la vie.

thanks. it seriously sucks. I am very happy for the ppl that got in... but very jealous since I applied for poetry also. I used the online access with the code and etc. I have been checking that thing twice a day for weeks.

I am a long time lurker at this site. I have watched with extreme jealousy as others have posted acceptances, and continued to gnaw my fingernails to the almost quick. This afternoon I received an email from North Carolina State University letting me know i was in their MFA program for poetry with a TA ship.

Im in at Eastern Washington University for fiction. Full funding. Great conversation. Havent heard from anyone else yet, but at least I dont have to worry about it. The guy who talked to me immediately sent me about 7 addresses from people in the program. i wrote them all with a series of questions. They all replied pretty quickly and nothing but the greatest things to say about the program (including that the stipend was more than enough to live on) CONGRATS TO EVERYONE ELSE. AND TO THOSE WHO HAVENT GOTTEN IN, DONT LOSE HEART...THIS WAS MY FOURTH TIME AROUND (and I bombed the GRE. I tried to do well, but I just did terrible 410 math, 490 verbal, 5.5 writing (well that is the only good part))....GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE. Im sure I will see you on the best sellers list someday.

That’s great… nice to hear that you got a TA, from the website I got the impression that they had a very limited number of them. I applied there in poetry (as a very welcome backup… can’t beat the location…) I hope they call me soon!

I graduated from OSU in June. In fiction. Happy to answer any questions you might have. I guess one thing I'd point out, given the discussion flying by on this board, is that OSU grads have been publishing well lately. (Not me, alas!) One current second-year student, Don Pollack, already has a contract for a short story collection with Doubleday. Other recent grads already publishing books: Christopher Coake, Rebecca Barry, and Sheri Goldhagen. And Holly Goddard Jones, who graduated with me a few months ago, has work in the Kenyon Review, Epoch, Southern Review, and forthcoming in Gettysburg Review and New Stories from the South 2007. OSU may not be a big name program yet, but going there certainly won't hold you back.

I've been lurking for quite a while. Last year at this time I was happy/sad at my acceptance w/o funding to Pitt. I didn't take them up on their offer and, even though the program is excellent and Pittsburgh is a great town, I'm glad that I didn't. I reapplied for Fall 2007 and I got a late January call from Lee Martin at OSU. I'm in in fiction with tuition waiver and teaching. I'm very much leaning towards their offer even though I have a few applications still out there. I agree that they have been awesome to talk with. Very accessible.

If anyone has any info on OSU's program, don't hesitate to pass it along.
