Re: [augustmaria] What I'll do with another year... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey, I wrote the high school thing. Sorry. I am a moron. I am always doing the "hey look at me im funny," thing. Probably wont be the last dumb thing I do today. Sorry again- just consider the source.

On another happy note- I received nothing from Oregon, Hamline, or Hollins today. I keep checking the Oregon website, but it says nothing but that my app was received. The other two nothing. I want to get into Oregon really bad. I think it is the state I should live in.

And one last piece of uplifting news- My senior paper/thesis thing isnt even half done, it is driving me batty. I have to write it in Spanish, and my grammar/syntax is just plain goofy, so it is like pulling teeth.

If I drank I would go get tanked right now. As it stands I am going to a production of Orphan Train tonight. Should be good. Forget all this academic stuff for an night.

Peace and all that

Has anybody heard about Poetry from Michigan?
None of the schools I've applied to seem to have their acts together poetry-wise.

P.S. I applied to schools last year and heard back from Art Institute of Chicago (accepted, no money) at the end of March. So keep we should keep our hopes up!

Rejection, U of New Hampshire in fiction, via the post today.

"...it should not be viewed as passing judgment on your ability as a writer."

I was kinda under the impression that's what competitive admission into an M.F.A. creative writing program was all about. D'oh.

Silly me [In reply to] Can't Post

Today I discovered an envelope from New Mexico State University in my mailbox. Had I thought a minute, I wouldn't have gotten worried. After all, the submission deadline was only 8 days ago.

The letter was two pages of, "Hey, we got your application. You should hear from us in 4-6 weeks. Here's some info on NMSU and Las Cruces."

No rejections yet. I remember last year I got a rejection letter that was addressed: "Dear applicant." I recall being none too pleased with that. I seem to also recall that Syracuse's rejection letter was along the lines of, "If we accepted you, it would be a waste of our time and resources," only in a much more professional, pseudo-polite way.

UT Austin [In reply to] Can't Post

Okay, last year several people found out (around February 20th) that they were rejected from Michener using this website: http://utdirect.utexas.edu/nr/appstat.html. If you want to check your status, you just need the UT EID they gave you when you submitted your app. I checked. and I haven't been rejected yet, so that's a little comforting:o)

Re: [Banyon] UT Austin [In reply to] Can't Post

Does anyone remember where the decisions were located? For Iowa, it's clear - Admissions decision - In Progress.

For Michener, I'm assuming this line would change:
We have received all credentials required to process your application. Your file has been forwarded to the Graduate Committee for review.

I went back and read the beginning of this thread, from last year at this time. Almost the exact same posts and tone of worry from names I now recognize as current MFA students at Michener, Iowa, etc. It's gonna be alright.

True, and I would take it badly, having lost 3 years due to one financial and/or bureaucratic snafu after another trying to finish undergrad.

At least it seems most schools will reconsider applications a year later, so all I have to do is work on the writing sample. I would not relish going through this process all over again.

Hate life? Hell no.

It has to do with perspective—when it comes down to it, this is just some more school bullshit.

I'm with you. Not to sound all sunnyside-up here, but I'm pretty pscyhed about this year, MFA or no. My motivation to write and improve is increasing day by day, and I actually have the time to act on it. Plus, my family and my dog and my friends aren't going anywhere. Nor are ice cream, kalamata olives, or albacore sashimi.

Well, for me, the MFA is another 2-3 years of not having to find a job. If I don't get in anywhere, I'm going to have to return to the real world, and that would just plain suck!

Sing it, brother! That's me. But I'll play the Reasons Why It'll Be OK game anyway, just to cheer myself up:

1. I'll probably end up staying in the Seattle area for a year, which will make my best friend and his wife happy since they hate it when friends go out-of-state to school ("We never see them again!", etc.). My parents might kind of like it too...

2. I can watch my Mariners almost everyday whereas no matter where I went to grad school, I would see their games maybe twice a year if they happened to be on Fox MLB.

2a. I can continue my quest to marry King Felix, the Mariners' ace pitcher. How can he *not* notice me if I stand around the bullpen for two hours before every single home game?

3. I can continue my freelance writing, which has been positive so far, even if it was only one article. It was a very well-paid article and I got to interview professional baseball players so it was worth it.

4. I can expand my freelance writing to include some hard-hitting-Woodward-Bernstein-investigative journalism. More than that, I've got a few ideas for actually doing undercover reporting work so I can have really, really, really unbeatable angles for my articles. I'd also like to do it because I'm masochistic like that—after all, I'm subjecting myself to this horrible waiting process, right?

OK, time to go sleep off the sadness of not hearing anything this weekend...

University of Arizona [In reply to] Can't Post

Yesterday, I got a rejection letter from The University of Arizona. But I was too busy watching Season 1 of The Wire to care all too much. Anyone seen that show. My, oh my.

edit: I just checked on University of New Hampshire's website, and I have been denied there as well.

Re: [Tapeworm] University of Arizona [In reply to] Can't Post

I just checked the mail since no one got it on Friday or Saturday. Rejected from Arizona, dated Feb. 20, and oddly enough, I'm relieved since it means that my applications are making headway somewhere, even if it's bad headway. Then again, in this process it seems like no news is good news.

I also got a financial aid something something from UNCG. They said I can check my app status on their website and, of course, the website is down right now....

I think I'll be watching Arrested Development to take my mind off the rejection because Lucille Bluth so appropriately says: "I'd rather be dead in California than alive in Arizona."

Did you find your status through webcat? Mine still just says "under review..." and I'm dying to know what the verdict is. UNH is the only program I applied to.

Did anyone else receive a call from UNCG to this effect: "Your application is with the readers, and we're considering admitting you, but our admissions process stretches into April"? They've been really good about answering questions personally, etc., but I still haven't heard anything definitive.
