Hey Jay,
I say go for Oregon. They have a better reputation as an older program with more successful alumni. Wilmington is great, but in comparison may not meet all expectations. Also, I've never been to Eugene, but I've been to Wilmington. It's a quaint, cute town, but there's probably more going on in Eugene - at least as far as arts and music. And you can tell your honey that there's a beach within driving distance there, too!

And oh man is the Oregon coast one of the most beautiful places in the world I've ever seen!

Ah, I see. The beach is definitely enticing. But didn't I read a few weeks ago that your husband wants to be a hippie? If that's the case, Eugene should make him happy, too. Plus, it's only an hour drive to the ocean, albeit a much colder ocean. I'll probably be ending up in Fresno (Cal State Fresno), even though I haven't heard from 8 of my schools yet. My mom lives there, and she's offering too many incentives to pass up, including free daycare for my 15 month old son. Never in my life did I think I'd be willing to live in Fresno. But the program is actually pretty decent (3 years with well-published professors). So I guess it's true that you should never say never.

Anyway, good luck with your decision making! I wish you all the best.

Re: [crummy] UNC Wilmington [In reply to] Can't Post

I posted this on seth's blog, but to anyone still waiting to hear from wilmington, I emailed them yesterday and they had just "found" my application that a rush had supposedly been put on weeks ago for reveiw. apparently the grad school is having issues sending things over. so if you're in doubt, call or email and make sure your application is actually being looked at. I'm hoping that's finally the case for mine...

Oh man. I'm waitlisted at UNCW, which is actually my first choice school. But, I have to accept at Memphis and register for classes on Monday...15 days before UNCW said they would know if I have a spot or not. I would hate to be "that girl" and back out of a commitment, but I hear the beach calling my name.

I just accepted an offer at another school, so a poetry slot at UNCW should be opening up.

Re: [pareidolia] UNC Wilmington [In reply to] Can't Post

In this case, the waiting idea confuses me a bit, because I'm not on the waitlist...I simply haven't heard anything. I'm in the same situation for VCU. In both cases, I contacted the office and heard something along the lines of "we're reviewing your app." Is this really true? My UNCW app has probably been in their hands for about 3 months now... Why not give a designation of waitlist? Perhaps because I would ask "where?" and they'd have to tell me something like no. 47?

Either way, I've exhausted myself with conjecture. I'm going to go about my business as an aspirant and write my biography about sniffing glue and paying for random pets to get launched into space. Seriously, at this point, I know the rules are April 15, and those rules are written for my benefit and the universities'. They can't process everyone at the same time, and they can't make definitive determinations on their incoming class without getting a bit of feedback from their acceptees (just like I can't decide on which school I'll attend without knowing where I'm accepted).

In the interest of my mental health though, I've refocused my sights on the writing. If I get a call whether it's a university or a lit mag, great. If not: me, space, pets, and rockets.

Hey Vanessa,

Wilmington finally let me know. In fact they called while I was sitting in on a class at another school! They said I'm in with a three year TAship. Sarah Messer was super sweet and enthusiastic in her message. I'm sure they will be calling the other nonfiction people now. She said the delay was due to sorting out funding, but man was it a long delay!

Good luck to all still waiting on them. Not much longer now, I think!

Still Hope. Don't Give Up Hope. [In reply to] Can't Post

If anyone is following this thread in conjunction to the waiting game thread, please know that I just informed UNCW that I accepted another position. So someone should be getting an acceptance email in the next day or two.
