UNC Wilmington Can't Post

Brief post before I go play Star Wars video games with my son...

I'm trying to gather more info on UNC Wilmington. I haven't heard anything positive or negative yet (just an e-mail stating that I would be notified in April.) Still, I'm fantasizing that I'll have to choose between Oregon State and UNCW.

My questions:
1. How many students are admitted each year? The website mentions that first-year students may not get into a workshop in the first semester. Instead, most students take literature or elective courses. This leads me to believe that the program is large.

2. What is the funding like? The website also does not give any clear info about this. The cost of living seems reasonable in Wilmington, so I'm not too worried. It has to be better than Los Angeles.

3. How many classes do TAs teach per semester? Is there an opportunity to teach creative writing?

4. When, when, when will they make a decision?!? (Sorry, just me freaking out.)

Any info at all about Wilmington is appreciated. Oregon State seems very small and intimate. Based on the website, UNCW seems like the exact opposite.

Hi, I am also wildly anxious over Wilmington. I don't have the answers to most of your Qs, but in an email they sent me ages ago they said they expect to receive more than 250 applications and will admit 20-25 students....

I have no real knowledge of the program, but if first-years have trouble getting into workshops, it sounds overcrowded.

Hey kcole,

Not sure if you are applying for poetry/fiction/nonfiction, but I can tell you that they called me the week before last to tell me they accepted me in poetry. From what I gather there is another person on speakeasy who has been accepted also, but they seem to be notifying randomly (supposedly someone got the call in Feb if I recall info from another site).

They do let in 20-25, but that is for all three genres. So we are talking maybe 8 poets max. Of those 8, about half will get funding. Funding comes in the form of a teaching assistantship, and because the creative writing department is its own department those TAs teach undergrad creative writing, two sections a semester, with about 10 students per class.

Because it is a three year program I wouldn't worry so much about not being in a workshop the first year, plus it seems to depend on who is visiting there, etc. From what I gathered, workshops are small and they don't just cram in extra people (a friend of mine who went into a different MFA program last year said there was no truth in advertising, and her workshops were extremely crowded, like ten people over the posted class size, so they could fit everyone in, so I am sort of wary of that myself).

I am not very good at math, but if they admit 20-25 students each year, with a three year program that means there is likely 60-75 students at any time, with a third of those in your genre, and a third of that in your entering class. So it doesn't sound huge to me, but that may be a matter of opinion.

Since no one has been rejected/waitlisted yet, I assume they are just going down the apps and admitting as they like, which means they may not have gotten to yours yet. They seem very friendly and I bet would be nice if you called to ask. They didn't give me a deadline yet on accepting the offer, and they haven't offered financial aid either (at least not to me). I don't remember the deadline to apply but I sent all my stuff in around early December: they may be going chronologically.

I hope this info helps, but really I would just call and ask them. Easier said than done, I know, because I still am afraid that they called me by mistake. (I have extreme paranoia about all my acceptances because I have yet to get anything in the mail that says I was indeed accepted. You know, something with a university seal or some official sounding dean's signature.)

Good luck!

Re: [soulzenful] UNC Wilmington [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for all of the info, and congrats on the acceptance! I'm in fiction. I did hear of rejection in February. Considering I got my app in right at the deadline, I think I'll be one of the last notified.

If they take 8 per genre and fund 4, then it looks like I can probably cross North Carolina off my list. I know nothing about North Carolina's job market. Is it possible to work and pay for it myself for the first year?

I did receive an e-mail earlier in the month letting me know that they were processing my application, and I'll be notified in early April. I'm trying not to take that as good or bad news.

I was accepted there last year, and visited the campus, but chose to go elsewhere. Most of the students worked in the tourism industry, waiting tables. I was told they only had 2-3 TA-ships for the entering class last year, but it looks like the funding situation might have improved.

Congratulations!

Did they tell you how long you would have to wait to learn of your funding situation?

Funding notifications go out in the first week of April. Keeping my fingers crossed. I need it badly.

Congrats, klobo! I hope they make it worth your while to go. Wilmington sounds beautiful, and the program sounds great.

I have an MFA from UNC-W in poetry; lots of pros and cons to their program. One thing for sure, their rep. is growing, so an MFA from them today may be more "substantial" in a few years.

Feel free to e-mail with specifics; I'd rather not speak publicly.

Anyone know what is going on with the Nonfiction notifications? I am dreaming of the beach and growing impatient.

danceanielle,
I contacted the MFA director about two weeks ago to ask her about nonfiction decisions. the director said she would "rush" review of my application so I would know one way or the other, because I had other offers, but like I said, that was two weeks ago and still nothing...

I'm curious to know if anyone who has been accepted to UNCW has made their decision about whether or not they are going yet...

I'm also interested to hear any information about the program and/or Wilmington.

i just called uncw, she said they are still in the process of making decisions, her voice sounded a bit sketchy (whatever that means), maybe she's received tons of calls, but they are still reviewing apps.

hope that helps.

Are they reviewing applications for nonfiction only or fiction as well? I know that some folks have already heard from UNCW. Dare I hope that I still might have a chance with fiction?

It seems there's some kind of administrative mess going on at UNCW -- I just emailed and the department hasn't even received all the applications from the graduate school, including mine, which I sent in at the beginning of January. The incredibly helpful program assistant said they're expecting to make all decisions by April 15th...

Got my rejection email for fiction a few minutes ago. I don't think I like being one of the first to report a rejection, even if I already decided I didn't want to go there.

I haven't heard a peep out of them. What does that mean? I submitted my application in November, and then some people were notified in February, and then some more now, and nothing for me. I want to cross them off my list if it's a no go.

jayg,

At this point in the game, I don't know what anything means. I say just forget about the other schools and go to the University of Oregon. It's sooooo beautiful there and it's supposed to be a fantastic program. I say that with no bias whatsoever, as I haven't applied to the other schools you've been accepted to. And congrats on all of your successes!

Re: [crummy] UNC Wilmington [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks so much! This whole thing is such a crazy experience, I was pretty prepared that I wasn't going to get in anywhere, laying in bed, staring at the ceiling, the whole bit. I think I am 99.9% going to Oregon, but my husband likes the idea of living by the ocean at UNCW, so I would like to cross them off the list, ya know?

I hope everyone gets in to the places they want to be!
