Re: [krystall] Calling all Canadians! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Krystall,

My friend had two complaints:
1) UBC low-res is expensive
and
2) He doesn't feel that he's really developing his writing beyond what he could have done himself.

As far as your Canadian voice goes, nobody's going to try to hammer that out of you. It'll make you stand out in a large group of Americans. I was the only Canadian at Sewanee when I went and it certainly made people pay attention, for better or for worse. Nobody in my workshop suggested cutting out the Canada stuff. If anything, it seems that Canadian programs try to hammer Canadian-ness into their students, which can be just as bad. I don't mean to be down on the UBC low-res model, or Canada. It's just that you've been given the task of comparing apples and oranges; you won't get the same experience out of UBC that you would at Columbia. That being said, 100K+ is a heckuva lotta debt for a person who's earning a fine arts degree, even though Columbia's a great school.

Thanks MissEsquire! I appreciate your perspective and experience. Luckily, I can afford to go (I've worked for the last 9 years in another profession, and so this degree is for me...)
I do think that turning down Columbia would require a really strong reason, but I just really wanted to think it all through. You've all helped me do that. And since i'm supposed to decide in 4 days, not a moment too soon!
