Re: [swiviol] Housing in Ann Arbor [In reply to] Can't Post

So remember how scared I was of the midwest -- well I'm finally looking at IU-Bloomington's campus and I am so okay on the geography tip. The campus is Beautiful and I found lakes and waterfalls. Ahhhh..... Okay now, off to see if I click with my soon to be community.

Re: Housing [In reply to] Can't Post

In addition to graduate student housing, I'm thinking of just flying in, taking a shuttle/cab to the campus, and then buying a SMART car, those cute little cars that cost roughly $5K-$8K, just to haul groceries and do some sightseeing in the area.

Raysen - I think the cheapest you can get a Smart car is around $12k. Not sure how available they are used.

Sounds good to me. I will be visiting my MFA programs within the next two weeks and I'll look around for SMART car dealerships. I may also resolve the whole grad student housing vs. apartment issue. I hope the airport has a cheap shuttle to campus.

Google maps and Streetview [In reply to] Can't Post

Have any of you guys tried looking at your potential future schools with Google maps and Streetview? Sometimes, it's hard to "see" the campus because in many cases, the campus itself is not part of Streetview. For example, I tried Brown a few times and I can't get past their stupid brick wall that surrounds the campus. I can't see much of Johns Hopkins either. Same with UC Irvine, I can circle the campus, but not look inside. Grrrrr...Now, Iowa on the other hand, I can see because I guess the city itself is integrated with the campus. Of course, there are pockets of darkness here and there.

From Google maps, I love the way Iowa looks with the Iowa River snaking through the campus. But we all know how dangerous it can be to situate your dwelling too close to something so beautiful. Can Iowa survive another flood? Is the physical university in jeopardy?

I think I posted elsewhere that I tried to get a glimpse of the Michener Center in Texas. From Streetview, the building was one of the saddest things I've encountered. The photos were probably not truly representative of its charm and grandeur. I'm guessing.

Huh. Interesting. So, elsewhere, you said (re: another poster's obsession with "the phone call"):

"This is seriously f****d.

Me? I let the answering machine pick up everything."

Clearly because you're soooooo busy with loftier pursuits.

San Francisco [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey all,
Just accepted to U San Fran. I've never been there, and am wondering if anyone has any insight on the area. I've seen pictures (and Full House was my favorite TGIF show in the 90s...) but I'm a little scared by the cost of living. I'm from Boston though, so I'm hoping the transition won't be too bad?!
Thanks for any insight! =) Megan
