Robert--
I got wait-listed too! Poetry or fiction? I know of 5 poetry wait-listers, 6 if you are one too. My hopes are now dwindling.

Waitlisted for fiction. Hopefully there are some writers with other options in those top spots, writers not looking forward to living in Lake Charles. It's the only place I applied. Off to talk trash about the city and program on other forums! (kidding, though I briefly entertained the idea, briefly)

Are you on the Facebook MFA Drafters group? Perfect place to talk trash! Please do! For poetry too. :) Hope to see you there (at Mcneese, especially!)

Re: [sonshineslocs] The Waiting Game...Have you heard yet??? [In reply to] Can't Post

I applied to:
Hunter College - rejected via email on 19 March
Brooklyn College - rejected via email on 28 March
The New School NYC - still waiting
Portland State - still waiting
San Francisco State (SFSU) - accepted via email on 27 March
California College of the Arts (CCA) - accepted via email on 21 Feb: offered merit scholarship of 17,000 per year (renewable)
OTIS - accepted via email on 10 Feb: all graduate writing students receive $15,000 a year (renewable)
California State at Long Beach (CSULB)
Sooo.... I've read a lot of things about SFSU, but nearly nothing about CCA. Does anyone know anything? I'm really, really appealed by their interdisciplinary approach (you must take visual arts classes), motto and mentoring program. Put off by the tuition fees of course (35,000 a year), but with the scholarship it ends up as 18,000. So my question is - is the CCA program good enough to warrant paying an extra 5,000 a year? (That is, compared to the SFSU and other state university tuition of 13,000).
Aah! I really don't know!! Will it be better for my later job prospects to have gone to a state uni (more competitive) rather than a 'pay your way' college? IS CCA a 'pay your way' college? Or does the quality of the teaching reflect the high cost? Will it be better for my later job prospects to have received a merit fellowship? Any comments at all on CCA would be very much appreciated.

I got wait listed at the only school to which I applied this year as well. And then all the top applicants accepted their spots, so there's no MFA this year.

What do I do now? Where do I go from here?

My GPA is a 2.52, I have no published work, no internships, no sterling extra-curricular. I have a dozen reasonably finished stories that are all too long to submit to any journal and one great story with which I'm quite happy and two half-finished, terrible novels. The only thing I have to recommend me is a perfect (on the verbal and writing) GRE and that's about to expire in a year.

Do I bother applying again?
How can I make my application any different if I actually try again?

You could consider applying to other schools.
