Good morning:

I am looking for participants in the Stonecoast MFA program. If I remember correctly there are a couple of people here who have attended or are currently attending. Right now I am working on the application process for the program.

Hi Darren,

That would be me. We talked about Stonecoast in the old Speakeasy. I'm starting my second semester. I love the program, and would be happy to try to answer questions about it.

Hi Elli:

I thought you were the one who was at Stonecoast. How is the program working for you thus far? And what area are you working in: fiction, non-fiction, or poetry?

I am curious about the residencies and the time at home writing and corresponding with professors and other students. Could you tell me a little bit about your experiences?

I have just finished the first draft of my essay. If all goes well, I will have a finished copy very soon. Jack Driscoll is going to be at the Keene State Writers Conference this summer, which I am attending for graduate credit, and I hope to run it by him during that time to get some feedback. It will also give the chance to show him some of my work. I plan on doing the same with Ellen Lesser from Vermont College, where I am applying once again.

In the meantime I completed an online writing course through Vermont College for Graduate credit and received a 4.0. I also published my first short story about two weeks ago and have two more ready to go out. I just have to decide where I want to send them first. I do use the Writers Market online as a reference. Three more are in the editing process and I am starting a new one..

Glad to see you here. Hope a lot of other people come back as well. This site takes a little getting used to but it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Hi Darren,

I just started the Stonecoast MFA in July - in fact Elli was my "student advocate" and helped me learn my way around. If I can answer any questions, I'd be happy to. In brief: I was really impressed. The faculty was fantastic, the other students were incredibly friendly, helpful, and smart, and I feel like I'm learning a tremendous amount. I was a bit uncertain about the low-residency format, but I'm confident now that it was the right choice.

Good luck - and FYI, the writing sample is far more important than any other part of your application, including the essay.
