login issues Can't Post

Something weird . . . I can go to the PW site and login, but when I go into the Speakeasy I'm automatically logged out. . . anyone know what's going on?

If you can give me a few details, I should be able to help. The Speakeasy login is integrated with the site, so if you were actually logged out, you wouldn't be able to post. I checked your account, and it seems to be properly linked to the Speakeasy. Is it when you go back to the site that you're logged out?

Re: [jason] login issues [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jason!

I’m using Safari to go to www.pw.org. When I get there, I can see that I’m logged in. I click on the Speakeasy link, and it takes me to the Speakeasy, where I’m suddenly logged out. So on the Speakeasy page, I click on “click here to login,” and it takes me to “My Poets and Writers” where it says “Welcome Alamana” and I appear to be logged in. I go back into the Speakeasy, and I’m logged out and can’t post.
The reason I can post in here now is because I’m using Firefox on someone's computer —and that lets me in. I only have Safari on my computer at home.

Re: [alamana] login issues [In reply to] Can't Post

Okay, here are a couple of things to try:
1. If you're using the "Remember Me" when you login, try going to pw.org, log out, then log back in and see if that fixes it. Sometimes, the login cookies get out of sync. This should fix it.
2. If that doesn't do it, try making Safari clear it's cache (clear all website browsing data, I think it's called), to force it to reload the Speakeasy pages.

Ismael, it sounds like you are having the exact same problem I had. . . For everything to work, I have to go to P&W, log out, go the Speakeasy, click the login link there, login, and then go back to the Speakeasy. A bit of a pain, but it works.

Something strange is also happening with my computer, a mac. I wasn't seeing the most recent posts (stuck on September 27), but through a series of random clicks I can't possibly explain (much like adjusting rabbit ears on t.v.s in days of yore), I managed to get to the newest posts. Don't know what the deal is.

This sounds like your browser is considering its cached version as current and refusing to show the current page. Have you tried clearing your browser's cache? That should force it to pull the fresh page.

Firefox is generally better about retrieving fresh pages than the Webkit-based browsers, but under OS X often still requires a shift-refresh to force it to retrieve the updated page. Is Firefox set up to use a Web proxy by any chance? On most FF versions, it's in options->advanced->network->Configure how Firefox connects to the Internet. If it is, try changing it to "No proxy" and see if that helps.

Changed to "no proxy" from "use system settings proxy" (approximately), but no soap. Subforums still don't come up when I click on them. I have to refresh. Thanks for trying, Jason.

That's what's so strange about it. Nothing on the Speakeasy side changed with the recent upgrade. I'll see if I can duplicate it with any of the Macs at the office. If so, I should be able to track down what's going on.

I spoke too soon. Now I'm having the same issues. I can log in and get the updated pages then if I look at posts in one of the forums and click back on to the Main Index, it logs me out. Trying to log in again, it takes me to my profile page, saying I'm already logged in. I can get back to the updated, logged-in Main Index page through a series of clicks but I have to do that every time I try to view new posts on each separate topic.

I've been getting error messages all day when I try to login. When I finally get in, it will say that there are 2 (or whatever) new posts in one of the forums, but when I click on it and try to follow the thread, it takes me to the first page of the thread and doesn't show me the new posts. It seems as though the thread memory is completely gone.

I'm also on a Mac and use Safari as my browser. Everything seemed to be working fine for me up until yesterday.

Once you're logged in, and you go to a specific thread and want to get back to the Main Page, as long as you only use your browser's back arrow to go back then it seems you don't lose anything. Avoid clicking on the links to go back to the different categories and you won't have to go through all the weird log out issues.

Not exactly a login issue, but when I came in just now I was told of two topics, three threads, that had new posts. I went to the two topics and saw the threads marked, but when I opened the first I was not taken to the new messages as usual. There were no messages marked as new (although there were new messages). Back to the menu for that topic, the other thread was marked as read. Similarly in the other topic, although just one thread there.

I've changed nothing in my setup since my last login.

Sorry to pester you, but for the last week, whenever I come to the site I'm told to log in. When I do it takes me to a screen that has recent posts and a whole bunch of other stuff I've never used. I have to hit the connect with others button and then press the speakeasy button. However, once I entered a thread, if I get out of it I'm told I need to log in again.

Makes using the board less than optimal.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Swamp Thing I am having the exact same problem but you can avoid having to re-log in each time by only using your back button arrow on your browser for getting "out" of a thread. Seems that way the memory stays put and it's a lot less trouble.

Re: [alamana] login issues [In reply to] Can't Post

With the versions of Safari I've tested (Windows: 5.1.7, OS X: 5.1.3), it's not really logging you out, it's just showing an old copy of the page that it stored when you were logged out. Unfortunately, by doing this it's violating Web standards, since the pages are properly tagged "no cache". It effects the rest of the site, as well, not just the Speakeasy (not to mention a huge portion of the Web).
Clicking "reload" should force it to show the page as it really is, reflecting your current logged in/logged out state and the read/unread status of the posts. It's not a great solution, but until Safari gets fixed it's the only one I have.
