Re: [mw1363] Florida State [In reply to] Can't Post

Congratulations! I am hoping for you, too.

I got word last week before I left for AWP that I was not admitted off the waitlist at Mizzou. But then at the conference I heard that I was accepted off the waitlist at Houston. A big shout out to bordercrosser for meeting up with me to chat about UWM at your book signing. You are the best!

I have been nominated for a fellowship and given another fellowship at Houston *but* I'm not getting excited until I hear for certain that yes, the nomination has gone thru. UWM would be dreamy but the odds of funding are on the lower end of spectrum. It seems most people accepted their funded offers there. Who would blame them?

So, a question for current PhD folks. I'm considering deferring and trying again next year. I overlooked schools I think in retrospect might have been a good choice for me like UC and UNLV. But I am also worried that the number of applicants is increasing which will make the odds even more difficult. What do you all think?

Hey, abcd,

You're poetry, right? If you do decide to go to Houston be sure and say high to Kevin Prufer. He's my old CW professor from back in my undergrad days in central MO, and he just got hired on faculty as the new poet in Houston. Really great guy. I wish I would have applied to Houston.

Good luck, abcd!

Best,
Marc

Thanks for the info, Marc! Yeah, I write poetry. I have heard such wonderful things about Kevin Prufer from several of his former students. That makes me happy. I'm calling today to find out more info about Houston. Keep us informed on what you decide!!

Well,

Julianna Baggot just wrote a nice email, explaining how the funding they were hoping for didn't materialize for me.

She said they only let in 4 fiction Phd students this year.

Maybe next year.

Yeah, last hold out regarding schools. Also just got my last rejection letter from the 14 community college jobs I applied to.

It'll turn around, maybe. . .

Waiting... [In reply to] Can't Post

Waitlisted for admission and funding at UTK and Denver.
*sigh*

Anyone else still on edge waiting?

When and how did Denver notify you that you are on their waitlist?

Not really "on the edge" at this point. DU is the only program I applied to this year, and I plan to reapply next year to more programs.

Just took the literary subject GREs last weekend. What a scam!

Re: [abcd] Florida State [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey again! I haven't posted much, but I just wanted to pipe up again before I move on from this blog. It has been wonderful to follow all the ups and downs and has helped me a lot.

I have officially decided to go to Houston. They were able to come through in the end with a TAship and some fellowships. It will be enough for me to live comfortably. I also applied to Denver but still have not heard back from them. I'm sure it's a rejection and am not sure if I will write to get the final answer or not.

But I am happy with Houston. I visited there a couple weeks ago and really loved the feel of the place. I had a long talk with J. Kastely, sat in on a fascinating/challenging Tony Hoagland class, and ran into Nick Flynn in the hall. Everyone was really welcoming and supportive. I was surprised at how beautiful the campus was, kind of Art Deco with huge oak trees and very green. Maybe it's because I will be moving from grumpy, cold NYC, but it came off as a sweet city. (I know I'm in a little rose-colored bubble right now; I know will discover the hard stuff later.)

Good luck to everyone in these final days! I'll still be around for a bit if anyone has questions about Houston. Trying to wean myself off these blogs.

Oh, sorry to hear that Marc. Not that this is any consolation but I do hope you will try again next year. Last year I applied to only one school (FSU) and was wait-listed and this year I revised my sample and got input from friends on my application. Things fared a bit better the second time.

Oh that is a nailbiter, lcgr28. But thankfully it is the 14th of April--it seems like you should know very, very soon. I'd guess with those two schools the waiting list is not very long. I'm rooting for you!

Were these tenure track jobs? Tenure track jobs at cc's are getting pretty competitive and are going to folks w/ PhD's.

Assuming you have comp experience, apply for the full-time non-tenure track temporary composition jobs at large state universities that have to staff a ton of composition sections. Don't just apply to the jobs advertised on Highered or Chronicle, either--contact comp directors at large state universities.

! [In reply to] Can't Post

So, after a very difficult decision process, I'm headed to Iowa for the critical PhD. Spots should open up (or have already) at Tennessee and Cincy.

Best of luck to everyone still on those wait lists!

Some were TT, others were not. The impression I got from most of them is that they wanted you to have worked for the cc part-time before hand, and that outside hires were becoming rare.

Only temporary comp jobs I could find are for adjunct spots, which I've applied to. But they won't let me know anything until August 1 for the Fall semester.

Have you considered applying for online teaching jobs? The pay is comparable (sometimes better) than adjunct. This Yahoo group is a phenomenal resource for online teaching info:

That's pretty common, actually. I was a full-time temporary comp instructor at a large state university, and wasn't hired until a month before the start of the semester. I've seen some full-time temporary positions on higheredjobs lately, though.

Be sure to contact comp directors at large state universities so that they have your CV on file once things really start to move in July and August. Also, scope out the comp sections at these schools to get an idea of how many slots they'll have to fill--the more slots, the better your chances.

I taught online last summer for one of the major for-profits, and I have to be honest--it was a terrible experience, though I'm sure it varies according to institution type.

I would avoid teaching online for any of the for-profits. The courses are all canned, and many of the students are barely literate YET entitled. Pretty awful combination.

Hey guys-- I received an offer from Denver a few days ago that I'm accepting. I don't know much about whether they're still making offers (an email to the department last week asking that question went unanswered--I assume they're being overwhelmed with such emails and phone calls at the moment). I had no idea how gut-wrenching this whole process would be and am so glad it's over! Best of luck with late offers--fingers crossed for you!
