I'm in limbo land, half-planning to maybe (?) move across country, half-planning to figure out how I'll make the most of a 1.5 hour subway commute.

Congrats on the acceptance!

As for subway commute, I use that time to either edit my stories or read/take notes on someone else's stories.

I've done a lot of writing on public transportation. The trick is reading my handwriting later.

Congrats on the acceptance, AncaLS. I hope the wait isn't too horrible. I can't imagine having such complicated decisions to make!

Thanks, V1ctorya and Sibella.

I do agree, reading and writing can be great on the subway.

It is a complicated decision; my husband is in on this whole MFA thing and will have to find a new job if we move. I thought it kind of auspicious that his profession's annual conference is being held in Minneapolis this spring, but I don't want to get delusional about Minnesota.

Does anyone have any news as to when AZ State and Oregon intend to send out their rejection letters? I'm anxiously awaiting mine at this point. :-)

I don't know anything about the programs themselves, but the chance to live in Seattle would mean a lot to me--it's a great area.

Then again, NYC seems great for artists. A friend who lives in Brooklyn, a filmmaker in his 50s, says that no one looks askance at people over 21 who are actually pursuing the arts. (I never found that situation all that easy in the D.C. area.)

Hope it works out the way you want!

Thanks! I do love Seattle, but can't make the cross-country jump without funding. I love Brooklyn too, but I've lived here most of my life so a change of scenery would be nice.

Anyone hear anything from UNO yet? All silent on my end. I am starting to feel like that is a REALLY bad thing.

I think someone posted an acceptance to UNO on TSE this week. Not sure since it's not one of my schools, but I think I saw a comment on the blog. Good luck!

Re: [unsaid78] (UNO) still waiting [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah, someone posted that yesterday--for fiction. I'm now only half-holding my breath for UNO.

That makes the list (I'm fiction):

Acceptances
South Carolina, with funding
Rutgers-Newark, no funding

Waitlist
McNeese

Still waiting
UNO
UNCG
Oregon (not holding out hope)
ASU (not holding out hope)

And... 8 rejections.

Regardless, much better than last year where I was 0 for 12. Woot woot.

All,

For those who are in New School limbo, they are very nice if you call and it seems the decisions have been made. I just found out I have been wait listed for fiction.

This is to answer Khalilah from several pages of posts past: McNeese. They're the only school that only asked for a 10-page sample of your work and a cover letter, no application OR FEES, no references. If you go back through the writers & poets they've brought in, they're also forward thinking in who will be "A list." It's easy to just bring in the current stars, it's a talent in itself to recognize who will become them.

I was NOT optimistic about Irvine-- everyone seemed to know before me! I was notified by a one page letter sent by mail.

The letter was received this week (day before yesterday perhaps). At this point I would say it would be reasonable to call or email their Grad Secretary person and explain that you would like to know your status as you are mulling over other offers (my line I used with Houston).

For the folks still waiting on the status of their Ohio State applications, it seems as if the school has updated their results online. I logged into my account a little while ago, and found out the verdict was no. In their words, "Your application for admission was not approved. You will be informed of the decision by mail." Cold. They win my award for bluntest rejection of the season.

Haven't heard anything from:

Houston
Irvine
Virginia
Boston

My hopes aren't high, but I'd like to hear already. For those of you that have heard, where do you live? (I live in NY, so my letter might take longer) Is it a good or bad sign to have not heard ANYTHING at this point?

Also, I was waitlisted at NYU (fiction). Anyone else, or know of anyone else? Anyone planning on turning down an acceptance?

Chess --

We're pretty close to April, so if you haven't heard anything from a school, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to call the program office and ask about your status. I think that I saw on the MFA blog that someone did recommend calling Irvine. There is a slight chance that those schools might be keeping you on a very short list of candidates in limbo, in case their top choices elect to go elsewhere.

Also, has NYU informed you of your place on the waitlist? They might be able to tell you if admitted applicants have turned down their spots -- which might be a positive sign for you.

Gosh, I'm hoping for the best for you.

Mike Valente

and Good luck!

Thanks Mike, I asked NYU how many were on the waitlist and my number on it, and they said they don't release that info (WhyTF not?).

Does anyone know any info on the number of students on the NYU waitlist (fiction)? I'd appreciate any info at this point.

Re: [Chess] waitlist, rejected, accepted [In reply to] Can't Post

Also, if you follow or search the discussion threads on the mfa blog or TSE, then you might come across someone who has already declined his/her acceptance or waitlist spot at NYU. I've seen a few of those already for other schools, posters saying, "I've accepted a spot on the 49ers, so I've turned down my offer from the Vikings."

One other thing -- shoot an email to Seth Abramson -- his email address can be found on TSE. He might (huge emphasis on "might") have stats on NYU's waitlist pool and yield rate.

It is strange that NYU doesn't release that info -- you can potentially be a new student, so why would they leave you in the dark?

UNCG [In reply to] Can't Post

Does anyone know what the hell is going on with UNCG? Do they have any money?

Have they made offers? With funding? I'm been in limbo with them for over three weeks, a waitlist I guess, but I'm going crazy here.

I've heard worse and worse things about their money situation over the last few weeks. The director said they don't have much and I'm hearing chatter that they're going to admit like, 2 people per genre.

Anyone out there with funded offers from UNCG? Should I resign myself to waiting another year?

Have I mentioned that this is the fault of the financial industry? I'd be frickin' in a program if it weren't for those greedy bastards.

Re: [potshot] UNCG [In reply to] Can't Post

Jim is shopping for jobs on campus for accepted students, but their transparency about lack of funding is just to keep prospectives in the loop in case they get a better $ offer elsewhere.

I'm in there, and he thinks he may have found me a job outside the dept. that would pay for the first year and knock down my tuition considerably (I'm also in-state, though). I know another student who's in and has been offered a TA position (but that guy is coming in with a MA-English).

Do you think you'll go if you get money? Hang in there if you're really interested. PM me if you want more info about the program. I've been emailing with students a lot, and I went up to visit there a few weeks ago.

I was accepted to uncg early this week for poetry... and it seems like the funding situation is as dire as it sounds. So far I haven't been offered anything, but I know they are trying their best. I'm not sure how many people have already been accepted or what kind of funding has been available for other people... I just have my fingers crossed at this point. It's a rather strange situation because they keep suggesting that I take whatever funded offers I might have. I don't have any so all my hopes are pinned on greensboro. Good luck to everybody else waiting. I'm wishing lots of good things...

Re: [franz] The Waiting Game...Have you heard yet??? [In reply to] Can't Post

I thought I'd resurrect this thread just because...

-all things being equal with funding, what's your first choice school and why?
-where'd you end up applying? I thought I was going to apply to 14, but only got to 10.
-if you're comfortable with saying it, what were your stories about? Did you send in a novel excerpt or short stories? How long was your sample?

I know these are totally redundant, but I want something to read at work :( somebody write something please!!! ;)
