Re: Funding -- The Javits [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear Anna et al.

I posted info about the Javits in the Fafsa/Tap post and I just want to really encourage everybody who isn't going to Michener or Brown to apply to the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship. It will fund a 2-3 yr MFA by paying your school tuition and fees, and giving you up to 30K a year and eliminates teaching requirements so you have more time to write and no debt worry.

Re: [Khalilah] Houston [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks so much. It's really unexpected since I didn't get into any schools last year, which included Houston. I no longer will stick pins of anger into my Houston Voodoo doll... Iowa, Irvine, and JHU you're not off the hook!

Thanks germericanqt and Khalilah!

germericanqt, I have no idea whether he made all the calls tonight, though I do know that another acceptance was posted on Seth's blog.

Khalilah, I think you and I are workshop buddies... Did you take a workshop at the Sackett Street workshop in Brooklyn? At any rate, congrats on the acceptance to Indiana. It looks like an awesome program.

Re: [Joe A. I.] Sacket and Congrats and Javits [In reply to] Can't Post

Is this my Joe, Joe Ireland? Oh this makes your success so much sweeter for me? Do you know how Gina is doing? I could not have gotten in anywhere if it wasn't for you guys' feedback in the Sackett workshop and then our independent workshop. No. Where. I tell you. That wierd and difficult short story was my break away success. I'm so happy that you're going back to the Pacific Northwest. I know you wanted out of here. PM me. How is your girlfriend? YAY YAY YAY! The Sackett street people are doing well. I know of another one but I want her to announce her success to you herself.

BTW, potshot, you're right, the Javits is closed for Fall '09 but the new deadline for Fall '10 should be in September or October and all of us can take advantage of that. Prepare and plan for it because MFAers do get it.

Re: [Khalilah] Houston [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm pretty sure that you can only apply for the Javits for the year you'd be starting a program... that means that any of us beginning the MFA or PhD in Fall 2009 who missed the October 2008 deadline are out of luck for the entire time we'll be in school. However, the folks who apply for Fall 2010 will still be able (if they hustle to meet the October 2009 deadline) to possibly secure a fellowship.

According to their website' Eligibility guidelines:

"Eligibility is limited to individuals who at the time of application-- (1) will be entering a doctoral program in academic year 2009-2010 and/or who, at the time of application, have not yet completed their first full year of study in the doctoral program for which they are seeking support; (2) will be entering a Master of Fine Arts program in academic year 2009-2010 where the masterís is the terminal highest degree awarded in the selected field of study." See http://www.ed.gov/programs/jacobjavits/eligibility.html .

The Javits --- You are eligible if it is 1st semester of program [In reply to] Can't Post

Jacq, the PhD students can definitely still apply for the fellowship starting in 2010-11 as they will not have finished their first full year of their program at the time of the application (see below)and the MFAers should email the Javits OPE_Javits_Program@ed.gov and get clarification because when you look in the long document on eligibility even MAers who are planning to get a PhD can qualify so MFAers matriculating in fall 2009 may be able to apply this fall to receive money starting in Fall 2010 just like the PhDers.

"or who, at the time of application, have not yet completed their first full year of study in the doctoral program for which they are seeking support; (2) will be entering a Master of Fine Arts program in academic year 2009-2010 where the masterís is the terminal highest degree awarded in the selected field of study." -- from the Javits website http://www.ed.gov/...javits/contacts.html

If the MFAers qualify in the same way as the PhDers, they will get their money starting in fall 2010 but one or two years is better than none. Email the Javits and ask. It won't hurt and it's an opportunity for up to $30K/yr, no teaching, no debt.

Yeah, it was a theoretical situation. :) For some reason I've suddenly mellowed out a lot since yesterday. I feel very privileged to have a spot at Alabama, and I'm relaxed about the next month of gradually getting the rest of the rejections/possibly more waitlist spots and seeing how it all turns out.

Well, Rachel, I will not be going to Alabama (didn't apply there) but I certainly hope we can meet at some writers' conference. I'm sure we'll enjoy each other's company. Get a chimichanga or something.

Oh HAIL no. Here it was I thought we were kin in universal "non-acceptance" (tm), and you've had an offer this whole time? I feel betrayed. Kidding, I'm glad you'll be going somewhere.

Is there anyone who, like myself, hasn't received a lick of good news?

Making nice ;) [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Raysen! I thought I remembered you being worried about Alabama responses. I'm sure a lot of us on this forum will meet each other in real life at some point over the course of our MFA's (and hopefully future careers as writers/faculty/food service industry workers) though we might not know it. (Who wants to go around saying, "I'm germericanqt, by the way... does that ring any bells?")

I can't recommend Sackett Street enough for New Yorkers looking for a place to workshop their stories.

Accepted at West Virginia University today via snail mail. Poetry. I know some people have gotten phone calls, so I'm not sure what (if anything) it means that I didn't. No mention of funding in the letter either, so.... Should I call the department or just sit tight for awhile?

Thanks, Alamana! I'm planning to call in the morning. I tried calling tonight, right around 5pm, and got a busy signal, so I'll try tomorrow. I know WVU isn't considered a top school or anything, but I've gotten really good vibes from the program so I'm excited about the acceptance.

This is not a blog. It's a forum or a message board.

I used to have a website in the mid-1990s where I wrote a bunch of stuff. At the time, it wasn't called a "blog," or weblog. It was just called a personal website -- MY personal website -- where any goomball can spout all sorts of nonsense, as long as they paid their monthly bills to their web host. Then, the proliferation of free websites made many people like me ditch their webhost. Then, a fancy schmancy name like weblog or blog came up that described what I was doing since the mid-1990s. What's up with that, I asked myself. Then, I just lost interest in "blogging." I kinda knuckled down and devoted my energies to The Short Story form.

(The above is my Personal Statement.)
