Jacq, the PhD students can definitely still apply for the fellowship starting in 2010-11 as they will not have finished their first full year of their program at the time of the application (see below)and the MFAers should email the Javits OPE_Javits_Program@ed.gov and get clarification because when you look in the long document on eligibility even MAers who are planning to get a PhD can qualify so MFAers matriculating in fall 2009 may be able to apply this fall to receive money starting in Fall 2010 just like the PhDers. "or who, at the time of application, have not yet completed their first full year of study in the doctoral program for which they are seeking support; (2) will be entering a Master of Fine Arts program in academic year 2009-2010 where the master’s is the terminal highest degree awarded in the selected field of study." -- from the Javits website http://www.ed.gov/...javits/contacts.html If the MFAers qualify in the same way as the PhDers, they will get their money starting in fall 2010 but one or two years is better than none. Email the Javits and ask. It won't hurt and it's an opportunity for up to $30K/yr, no teaching, no debt.
