I live in Vegas...nothing to be freaked out about at all. 3 months after I moved here someone broke into my car and tried to steal my stereo, but only succeeded in ripping out the face-plate. So, other than the incompetent criminals - it's a breeze.

Congrats on getting in to UNLV! I've lived in Las Vegas for the past seven years, so if you or anyone has questions about moving here, feel free to send me a message.

I confirmed with UNLV this morning. This is unbelievable! I've never lived in the desert before. But, I figure the weather is going to be the hardest part. When I moved to Boulder, I was looking forward to a weird mountain town. After a few months, I concluded it wasn't THAT weird. A little weird, but nothing to write home about. I suspect Vegas will be much the same.

Re: [slantoflight] Florida State [In reply to] Can't Post

Slantoflight,

Thanks so much for the response, and congratulations on all your success.

If I may ask, what were the conditions of the TAship that FSU offered you? How many classes did they ask you teach? Approximately how much was the stipend?

I've also asked another Florida State recruit this question, because I still haven't heard a response from FSU regarding my funding. Their funding is the last point of information I need before feeling totally comfortable with making a decision one way or the other. I could still get turned down for funding, but it would be nice to know what they might offer me if another TAship does turn up ...

hey -- I got the same email from jackson taylor at the New School, and I called back, and apparently I'm too late and he's gone for the day.

I really want to know the offer though!! can either of you tell me if you got any funding, or any details?

Congrats! This is slightly off-topic, but your avatar makes me smile every time I see it. It just seems so appropriate for the craziness of the MFA forums. :)

Man, it feels good to finally post on this thread.

Today, I got in off of Houston's waitlist. Big smile. :) I got in off of Oregon's waitlist a few days ago, as well. I've pretty much decided to turn that one down, so a spot should be opening up soon; now, it's between Houston & OSU.

If anybody has any recommendations or knows Houston & its program particularly well, please PM me. :)

I got in and some money (not full). If that helps-- I also did my undergrad there, so I can answer some questions about the school in general.

Bah. What my previous message was supposed to say is that I attended an open house last fall at New School, and they said that basically everyone they admit is given some amount of scholarship money, and no one is given a full tuition scholarship.

I'm still waiting to hear from them for CNF. According to the admissions office, they hope to make all decisions within the next two weeks.

fiu [In reply to] Can't Post

so, les standiford at florida international just offered me a teaching assistantship/full tuition waiver (i was notified last tuesday of acceptance via e-mail, and a letter i received friday confirmed it wasn't an april fools joke). anyway, i'm kind of stoked.

anyway, here's my plight: i've also been accepted to southern illinois university with ta'ship/full tuition waiver. i have to let siuc know by thursday of my decision, and this kid ain't got a clue what to do. well, i've got some clue, but i'd appreciate any help anyone would like to offer on which program to choose. and if there are any students of either school lurking around this message board, please feel free to message me.

i was also accepted to unh (declined it a couple of weeks ago), sort of accepted to gcsu, and waitlisted at university of wyoming. haven't heard from memphis. rejected from wisconsin, michigan, florida, alabama, colorado state.

I just got in off the waitlist at UC Boulder! Does anyone know anything about the program? It seems like a good place, but their website is maddeningly sparse...

Thanks!

Congratulations on all your success.

Although I'm not a student at either of these schools, if you're in for fiction, then I'd say Southern Illinois hands down. I have heard from many people that Pinckney Benedict is a fantastic teacher, and he's still a very active (and good) writer as well. Benedict alone would sell me for SIUC.

Plus I know that SIUC is a three-year program whereas I believe that FIU is a two-year program. Why take two years of funded writing when you can always take three?

Re: [rfleisch] fiu [In reply to] Can't Post

I would have to agree, but without knowing much in regards to FIU. I've perused their website and while it seems like a good program, I think SIU is more promising given their inclusion in some of the rankings on Seth's blog. Plus I have also heard good thinks about Pinckney Benedict and have been meaning to check out some of his work myself. It also depends on what kind of environment you're comfortable living in, as Carbondale and Miami are very different places (duh). Congrats though on your successful application, and good luck making that decision. I suppose it's a good position to be in.

Rick

PS: Don't quote me on any of this, but I believe FIU is a 3 year program as well.

i'm in fiction also. i reckon we'll meet sometime in the fall then. this is all pretty surreal still...isn't there another person who has been posting who is also going to UNLV? (that's an official shout out) anyway i've been out of school for four years now and it's a little weird going back. and it's also pretty wonderful. how about you? i kind of feel like i should be doing something to prepare somehow - other than just writing a lot. yeah so, it'd be interesting to hear what you're interested in. drop me a private message if you feel up to it.

American U [In reply to] Can't Post

I was just accepted at American University from the waiting list. They give money to only four (of twenty) students. Sounds like there's no way that money's coming my way, so I've quite the decision to make. Anyone have a rich uncle to spare?

That's a pretty expensive MFA degree. You could pay the same, or in some cases less, to do a low-res program while working a full-time job. Plus, you have to consider the ridiculous cost of living in DC. A closet sized studio apartment in DC is like $800/month.

wait lists [In reply to] Can't Post

So, since lots of people here are getting in off wait lists (including myself), I was wondering how other people feel about potentially going to a school they got into off a wait list. Basically, I'm deciding between a school that accepted me with great enthusiasm that I have grown to love, and a last minute wait-list acceptance to a (slightly) more prestigious program that was originally one of my top three, if not my #1 choice. At this point I'm leaning toward the former school, partly because I feel more psychologically secure going somewhere that I know has much enthusiasm for my work. Is anybody else thinking about this issue? Or am I the only neurotic one out there?

p.s. the programs are very similar in other respects--both fully funded (although one's in a more expensive metro area), three years, similar size, three genres...
