I have to agree. I teach extension courses, so I have students preparing for the MFA in my courses each quarter, and I wrote recs for seven students this year. Two of my students got in almost everywhere they applied, and I wasn't surprised. Their work is polished, complex, and readable. One is going to Iowa, and the other is torn between the Michener and Irvine. My other students have talent, but their work at present is less fully formed. This is not a condemnation. The first time I applied for MFA programs, I was rejected by my undergrad alma mater (The New School), which stunned and bruised me (and yes, I was fool enough to apply to only one program). The director told me that I lacked seasoning, not talent, and I came to see his point in retrospect. I shelved the MFA idea for about five years, writing on my own and in workshops, and had a much better result the second time around. The writing apprenticeship is a long one, and some applicants will be further down that road. Doesn't mean you can't get there, too, with equal time and effort.
