Hopkins fiction [In reply to] Can't Post

Anybody else here in at Hopkins for fiction? I got the call on 3/12 and just found this forum. It would be great to touch base with anybody else mulling the decision. Send a private message--I'm pretty sure I can figure out how to access that. :)

Re: U. Arizona [In reply to] Can't Post

My successes so far:

Vermont College, low-res
U. Michigan (wait-listed, with supposed probability of entrance)
U. Arizona

My genre's poetry. I got the acceptance email from Michigan a few weeks ago (Feb 19, I believe) and Arizona today (Mar 17). Arizona's offering me a Graduate Assistant Teaching-ship which would cover full tuition and health insurance. Not sure about teaching, though, I was hoping to get a fellowship. Plus teaching I'm sure cuts into the time you can devote to writing and coursework.

Advice, insights, opinions anyone? Feel free to PM me.

Thanks. And good luck to all!

Annie: Yeah, fiction. Neither of my schools offered me funding, but I'm definitely leaning toward SLC. But hey if you got a TA ship at Iowa, rock it! Congrats!

Re: [jerseycavalier] Houston [In reply to] Can't Post

Annie O, Me too, I was also accepted by maili today to SLC!!! I am so excited! It sounds like an amazing amazing amazing program. But, it is SOOO expensive--- however, the tuition is 24,500 or so and that's almost as much as Mills. What's the cost of living like in comparison to living in SF?

Are you thinking of going? When do you think we will hear about financail aid?

drakmar,
i was accepted to u of arizona in poetry also, with no funding. i like the program and i'm sure tucson is great, but i don't know. i'm pleasantly surprised because az was a reach school for me, though. do you or anyone have any insight about the program, i.e. possibilities of getting funded after attending for awile, cost of living in tucson, etc.?

Re: [camm] U. Arizona [In reply to] Can't Post

camm, congrats on acceptance. I'm going to get in touch with some current students to get feedback on the program, Tucson, etc. I'd be happy to share what they tell me off the boards via PM? if you're interested.

in the meantime, the Arizona English dept web site gives an overview of financial aid, here:

hope this helps. again, congrats!

Strangely, I haven't seen anyone else on the forums or blogs claim an acceptance there yet. So I'm guessing no.

Just spoke with the people at Arkansas. They said that the school was on Spring Break, so the notifications are going to be a bit sporadic. But, I was advised that people should be receiving something in the mail over the next few days.

Colorado State [In reply to] Can't Post

In at Colorado State, via snail mail. No word yet on funding (they say I'll receive a separate letter with funding/TA offers).

So, my tally now is:

Arkansas
SIUC
Maryland
Colorado State

Still waiting on:
Montana
UNCG
U of Virginia
Virginia Commonwealth

Any advice?

Re: [dickenscratch] Colorado State [In reply to] Can't Post

I just emailed UNCG to check on my status. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

I plan on checking with VCU later this week, too. Although, if you get to it before me please post your updates!

I've tried really hard not to nag people but still waiting on schools makes it hard to determine any travel/visiting decisions, especially with Spring Break interrupting everything.

my tally:

Accepted: UMSL

Waiting On:
UNCG
VCU
UNCW
Sarah Lawrence (answer most likely in mail according to other postings and previous paperwork; but nothing delivered yesterday)
Virginia (probably rejection)
Oregon (probably rejection)
Indiana (told today that letters went out; probably rejection)

Rejections: Iowa & Montana

Oh, you mean hmm? The one who's in at Cornell, Iowa, Michigan, and now Virginia? Sorry, I'm still skeptical of this anonymous wonder-poster.

Montana [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm in at Montana. I called them, and they said an acceptance letter is on the way, but that I'm "not in the top five" for recommended TA positions, so that blows.

Why would it surprise you that someone who got into one top program got into a slew of others as well? I'm sorry, I find the recent talk on this board about this whole process being little more than a crapshoot kind of ridiculous. Some people simply have stronger applications (read: writing samples) than others. This sort of thing is subjective only up to a point.
