Re: [idreamincursive] Vandy [In reply to] Can't Post

I applied to Vanderbilt in fiction, and am also currently a student here. I would highly recommend both Vanderbilt and Nashville (though the weather is slightly depressing in the month of February, just in time to compliment my MFA-blues). The MFA program is young but definitely going places, the students currently in the MFA program are all great writers and nice people, and the professors are simply outstanding (Lorraine Lopez, Tony Earley, Kate Daniels, Mark Jarman) as teachers and writers. With the recent addition of their sweet financial package, Vanderbilt is definitely one of my top choices. If anyone has any questions about Vanderbilt/Nashville at all, I'm pretty familiar and would love to answer them! And good luck to us all -- so far I've been rejected from Cornell and haven't heard from my other 7 schools, which includes Iowa. The waiting, the silent cell phone, and the empty mailbox are all slowly driving me crazy...
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I am pretty sure Vandy acceptances go out, by email only, in early March. So it's coming up!

Re: [golic] too much! [In reply to] Can't Post

martis,

Quick Update. Just saw Iowa has accepted two fiction writers by phone, and one poet. A little discouraging, but it's not to time to panic just yet; there are still a bunch of spaces left to fill.

MA in LNF? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey,
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about U of O's MA in literary nonfiction program? I applied there, as well as OSU's MFA program. Haven't heard anything back.

Re: [danielaolsz] too much! [In reply to] Can't Post

When I read those posts from "hmm" and "a.m." I felt horrible! Horrible, horrible, horrible.

But that has nothing to do with "hmm" or "a.m." really. I'm just upset I didn't get in to those schools.

I wanted to say THANK YOU to both of them for reporting their results. Yes, most of us are insanely jealous, but some of us really do appreciate your sharing this information. Please don't take the jealous responses here too personally.

It actually gives me a little hope knowing that people are still hearing from Iowa, that it's not over quite yet.... And also that a few more spots will be opening up when "hmm" and "a.m." finally choose their schools.

I think it would be almost impossible to report those acceptances and not get a jealous reaction from people. And I think branding them as smug because they didn't use enough exclamation points, etc, is, how shall I say, "wack."

I could imagine them just as easily getting criticized for using too many exclamation points - since too many exclamation points could come across as braggy and insensitive to those of us who got rejected.

Honestly I think the tone of their posts was fine.

I worry that people are going to stop reporting their info. Especially people who get into multiple schools (and those are the ones I really do want to hear about because it means more spots will open up later). I noticed that "a.m." has already taken down her post from Seth's blog, perhaps because of the negative reaction here.

Re: [froggoddess] UMASS Rejection Letters? [In reply to] Can't Post

i got accepted at u-mass by phone, but haven't received the official letter yet-- and i was told i wouldn't receive it for another week or so. that might explain a letter delay on all fronts-- i don't think they've actually sent any letters, acceptances or rejections, yet.

it sounds like they're still calling some people, though... i wish you the best!

have a look here:

there's a "letter to tense and worried people" that explains all the timing.

Re: [cellularsoup] UMASS Rejection Letters? [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks, cellularsoup, for the extra insight! This process is so bizarre -- the tiniest bits of information feel comforting somehow. :) And congrats on the acceptance!

While I'm typing, I wanted to echo zwilson20's comments -- of course I am irrationally and insanely jealous of the folks who have the good fortune to be facing a choice between excellent programs. But I'm trying really hard to keep reminding myself that jealousy is pretty irrational and insane. :) Besides, being petty and snarky accomplishes nothing except to create more awkwardness in a process that is already overwrought. So: congrats everyone!

[skip the soapboax if you're so inclined] It reminds me of the karmic debt I have for having attended one of those hard-to-get-into undergrad schools -- I rarely admit to where I went, because when I do people too often say, "Oh, you went to ____? I applied there but didn't get in." Seriously! What do you say to that? "Oh, I'm sorry?" Anyway, the only significant moral of that story is that I am too old to get comments like that and our mothers were absolutely right: ten or twenty years from now no one will care where you went to college/where you went to grad school/where your MFA is from. And really: isn't it great not to be 17 and going through this process? Applying to college was so much worse because I genuinely thought that my world would end if it didn't go my way. Objectively, the only thing that will happen if I don't get in this year is that I'll reapply next year. Meanwhile I'll keep working at a job that doesn't drive me nuts too much, living in a community that I love, and trying to write. I'm crushed!

And on a related note, that "letter to tense and worried people" is my new favorite thing in the world. Nice form.

Wow....that's such a nice letter...really! I didn't apply to Wisc. but I do wish more schools would put things like that on their website...

Last year, Brown posted after they had notified their acceptances and waitlisters....they said basically that everyone had been contacted that would have a chance at a spot. It really helped...since the rejection letter didn't roll in until weeks later.

Congrats to everyone who's been accepted, and good luck to all of those who are still waiting. No one should be afraid to post your accomplishments and acceptances - or their rejections. We're all just people with a common goal!

Thank you so much for posting the Wisconsin link.

I found their letter to be very humane; I have even more respect for their program now. It's a shame the odds are so steep.

If you can't sleep due to MFA decision anxieties, you can always blog. That's what I've been doing.
Anyone else out there got a welcome diversion for us? I've got a few weeks to kill!

Dream [In reply to] Can't Post

Speaking of sleep, I had a dream last night that my cat got into UMass for poetry. Funny thing is, I didn't apply to UMass and I'm fiction. This message board is messing with my head!

Thanks so much for the Wisconsin link! I hadn't realized they updated their website.

Since I'm in Chicago, if I'm an unlucky reject, I should only have a couple more days until I know! Oh, the nerves!

Re: [Glyph] Dream [In reply to] Can't Post

I am glad to read that other people are having dreams about all this, too. But, it was bound to seep into my dreams eventually, considering that it's all I think about. For instance, I had a dream earlier this week that the Iowa Admissions office called me in for an interview, and the Admissions office was actually a local medical doctor's office. A nurse/admissions representative did the interviewing.
I don't even want to analyze this little gem of a dream.

The cat dream is hilarious.

I dreamt that my poodle (see icon) could do tricks in response to Nelly songs. Of course, we live in St. Louis down the street from one of Nelly's cousins, so I guess it's to be expected.

Kealey Blog Ray of Hope [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey all,
I wanted to share some hopeful info I gleaned from Kealey's blog.

I'm not going to cut and paste the comment here (because I don't want to anger the awesome person who posted it), but it can be found at this link, and the screenname is "Bolivia":

http://creative-writing-mfa-handbook.blogspot.com/.../02/acceptances.html

Anyway, I heartily thank this individual for his/her post, because s/he describes receiving both acceptances and rejections all the way through the beginning of April back in 2006. Granted, s/he applied to like 20 programs or something, but it sounds like s/he got a couple of acceptances and waitlist notices in February, more in March and even a couple in April.

This post made me feel a lot--well, somewhat--better. I mean, everyone says not to despair until you either receive rejection letters or April 15 arrives, but it's hard when you see all these posts from people getting accepted at your schools.

In fact, if anyone else reading this message board would be willing to share acceptance date stories, we'd really appreciate it. Unless you're going to talk about having gotten into Iowa, Michigan and Cornell all before Feb. 20 :)
