Oh, I know. I sent everything I had this Saturday, plus the fee. Letters of recommendation were being sent directly to that one. My recommenders were aware of this deadline, and hopefully they postmarked by the 15th, but who knows? All I know is I haven't gotten back the ones that were supposed to be sent back to me for several other schools. I am very worried.

On the Phd side have you considered SUNY Buffalo's program in poetics? It seems damned awesome, from my perspective, though I'm not looking for a phd right now...

Given the geography of your applications, I think you should add colorado state for sure, and maybe boise state and the art school at chicago (though, I don't know about funding in the later two)...

The funding at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago is not very good. There's some money to be had, but nobody goes for free.

SAIC is a great place, though (I'd say the best), for experimental writers.

Had big hopes for this application process, but then got hit with the poverty stick again and again... dwindling the list. Anyone know of good schools with Feb. deadlines? My list's down to:

Iowa
Montana
Austin
Houston
Boise State
UNC- Wilimington

And no word from recommenders yet, so who knows if I'll be able to get everything in time for Iowa and Montana's Jan 3 deadlines. Sigh.

I should also say--don't worry about the deadlines being around Jan. 3rd or so... It doesn't matter so long as you get the main stuff for the application in, they understand if a few parts come in a week late or so (you can't control the profs writing you recs... or the speed of the transcript sending registrar... )

Hi danielaolsz,

Looks like you have a good list there. I would have liked to apply to houston and montana but my girlfriend is applying for doctoral programs in history. We have had to compromise.

I guess my biggest questions with Columbia College are ones that deal with money. I am excited by the faculty there. I also like the idea of going to a media arts school over another major research university (I am at UGA now for comparative literature). I worry about funding and the cost of living in Chicago though. I guess anything you want to tell me that you think is salient to my decision to apply would be welcome. I have an email address at rdowney15@gmail.com if you have any burning information to share. Again, specifically concerned with funding, cost of living. I feel like one of the mechanical trinkets that uses a pendulum to bob its head over and over.

Just my two cents, but here goes. Funding is almost nonexistent at Columbia College Chicago. And Chicago is an expensive city, although inexpensive compared to other big cities. A studio costs anywhere from $600 to 900/month depending on the neighborhood. Most fall somewhere in the middle. You could check out craigslist to get an idea.

You may want to look into the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, as funding there is a bit better, although still limited. Personally, I don't think there are any MFA programs in Chicago to get really excited about (mostly due to funding.) I wish there were, as I really hate to leave Chicago. But that's just my opinion, and I'm sure others feel differently.

You bring up the major points that I am most concerned with. I was under the impression that the funding at SAIC was even more limited or that the school cost a good deal more. Is this not the case? I would be attending school with my girlfriend so I imagine rent could be more manageable with two people. Chicago sounds great but the funding issues (ditto for NYC) make it almost impossible for a working class person to attend. Hmmm.

Yeah, I basically screwed the pooch when it comes to this whole application process, though it's at least half not my fault, does anyone know of schools with, at least some funding, with feb. deadlines? Wichita State, UNC- Wilmington, and Bowling Green... any others? And does anyone know anything about Wichita State? All I know is it's been around for a long time, and the fabulous Albert Goldbarth teaches there...

I did my MFA at Georgia College & State; they have a 2/1 deadline. It's a newer program, but I had a great experience and learned a lot. Tuition waiver, about a 9K stipend, and full funding for AWP. The director, Martin Lammon, used to be the prez of AWP. I'd recommend it.

In less than a month the first of them will start notifying. Yeesh. Seems like a minute ago it was September and I was stressing over the GRE.

MFAs that offer editorialships at literary journals [In reply to]

Dear PW,

I'm particularly interested in MFA programs that offer positions (preferably paid) at literary journals and publications associated with the program.

Can we do a round up of programs that offer this?

So far I have:
Cornell (Epoch)
FSU (Southeast Review)
UBC (Prism)

Also, Hunter has an internship program with a publishing house outside of the uni.

If volenteering and appearing on the masthead counts as a position, then the majority of MFA programs have something like this. Getting paid anything is a bit of a rarity though. I think Colorado State & the Colorado Review might have some assistant editor spots that come with a stipend.

The Journal at Ohio State offers a limited number of paid editorial positions. (One in poetry and one in fiction, I believe.) Other MFA students are also encouraged to participate in the editorial process (ie., read slush) to gain experience.

I assume that U. Missouri at Columbia does this on the master's level for MISSOURI REVIEW, because there are some funding opps for PhD candidates to do part-teaching and part-editorial. And since there are far less PhD students admitted each year than MFAs, it leads me to wonder...

And I wonder now, with University of Florida having SUBTROPICS, if their funding package has diversified to offer some students part-teaching and part-editorial work? I don't know, but it would be a reasonable guess to make...
