I don't know what to think about the abundance of "no news" I'm still dealing with at this point--I haven't heard anything from Texas (nothing on the web even), NYU, Irvine, or Florida, so I've just sort of assumed rejection and am working on making my final decision between the schools that have accepted me. I know all of these have already made some acceptances--are most of us waiting to hear from them?

Not to be a jerk or anything, but not having heard anything at this point is not a good sign. I called Bowling Green earlier, thinking that perhaps the reason I haven't heard anything is because they don't contact their waitlisters until April 15. Ms. McGowan told me that they hadn't allowed her to send out the rejection letters yet, due to the remote possibility that none of their five acceptees or ten waitlisters accept an offer. I seem to remember her saying that this has actually happened in the past, but that may just be a delusion of mine due to the state of shock I've been in for about a month now.

sorry to hear that jargreen...my comment about no news is good news was only specifically for UNCW since they sent out blanket rejection email today...otherwise you're right. No news probably bodes ill. At one point I thought that becuase I hadn't heard from Arizona, George Mason, and Alabama while others had been rejected that I was at least on some waiting lists...but then I got all 3 rejections on the same day.

Ouch, three rejections on the same day?! I received two on the same day. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. On second thought, that'd be the perfect revenge against one's worst enemy. Best of luck to you, Jonathan.

I should add, it's kind of sad that so many people have left the boards. Even if I pull through at UMass, I have no intentions of taking my winning ticket and leaving this fabulous community. Perhaps one day I'll also join the other Speakeasy communities that focus on publishing, agents, etc. Speakeasy is one of the greatest things that's ever happened on my journey as a writer. I do hope that folks who continue to lurk for a time do not deprive us of the occasional witty post.

No, of course you aren't being a jerk--you're right. At this point, though, I don't think being rejected would disappoint me at all. I've assumed rejection I'm not even hoping for good news from the school that waitlisted me. I'd just like to know exactly where I stand in this whole thing, no gray areas, so I can make the right decision...because there's pressure on me to make a decision by the end of the coming week.

I know it looks bleak, but some places haven't made decisions yet. I called Penn State a couple days back, for example, and they didn't have a finalized list yet. And at least one school doesn't have a submission deadline until APRIL 1ST.

If there are pressing decisions you need to make, you should call the remaining schools and see where you stand. Just call the English department, tell them you applied to the MFA program, and ask if they can tell you your status.

I know how you feel, and I'm honestly glad my wait is over. I felt the same way last year, even after all the rejections. It sucks, but there are always plenty of things to do if you don't get in.

Thanks! UNCW is the only one I'm waiting on despite having heard no word from Florida. There's definitely a lonely little rejection letter from UFl trying to make its way to me through the crazy US postal system.

So here's a question for all you fellow applicants out there...Which program(s) would you definitely not have applied to if you had it to do all over again, and why?

For me, there's no way Iowa is making it on my application list next year. I couldn't believe that I was competing with 746 (?) other people for 25 fiction spots. I got some faulty info and thought they took about 5%. Also, I was a little disillusioned to find out that selected current MFA students help the IWW weed out the mountain of applicants.

You might want to try Penske- better rates, much newer equipment, internet discounts! If you don't move at the exact beginning/end of the month when everyone else is moving, it's cheaper. You can try out different dates online for better rates. Plus on the phone you can see if they match or beat other companies' offers. Congrats on your acceptance!

Just got my rejection from Oregon. That leaves me with 7 rejections, 1 acceptance, 1 waitlist and 3 apps still out there. But at this point it's just Indiana, UC-Irvine and Virginia which basically means an anticipated 3 rejections.

I agree about not wanting to leave the Speakeasy. Even if I accept my offer I'm going to be sticking around and checking out the other forums. Everyone here has seemed pretty nice and really involved in the writing process. I definitely wouldn't want to lose that sense of community. It's rare. I've been in a large writing program the last four years and it hasn't fostered maybe more than a handful of people really interested in writing. By the way this is an undergrad program so that probably explains that.

If it helps: my acceptance letter from FSU says they have a large number of qualified applicates this year and that if I don't officially accept their offer by April 15, the offer expires. So, I think some wait list people will hear around the 15th.

I am so frustrated with Irvine's trickle down news. Or at least it seems so. I have not heard anything, but I'm liking UVA so that's fine.

A bit worried about the possible dearth of fine dining there (not that I could eat expensive, but spousal unit is a waiter/ bartender!)

The folks at FSU told me yesterday that they had just sent the letters out that morning. So the odds on hearing by Monday, for me anyway, not so good. It is good for them that they finally got back to me, though. I'm leaving for a quick trip to Florida on Wednesday, during which I was just going to show up at their office and demand my status (don't worry, stalking/bullying is not the purpose of my trip).

Those letters should roll in next week folks. As for me, it's a good thing I didn't hold my breath on them, and watch out NMSU, here I come!

I don't think I'd be bothered with FSU even if I got in, at this point.

I must say that I'm incredibly jealous. Only 2 people were admitted for Fiction this year at NMSU, apparently, and I didn't make it that far down the cut.

On the other hand, I'm in at a fantastic place known as Cal State Fresno, so that eases the jealousy. Mead helps as well.

I lived in C'ville for 6 years, and can tell you the eatin's great. Lots of upscale eateries as you'd expect to find in a college town, but also high-end restaurants and private clubs. (Not to mention dives, but not places I'd describe as unsanitary or unsafe.)

Charlottesville consistently is on every list of best places to live in the U.S. ad I can tell you, it's a cool small town with sophisticated sensibilities, character, energy, and arts. (The Virginia Festival of the American Film happens every autumn, plenty of galleries, writers, actors, etc.)

I loved living and eating there!

amday, just a few thoughts...if you are interested in going to Iowa, then you should reapply--regardless of the acceptance rate. Not everyone gets in the first time--Adam Haslett applied twice, got in the second time and then ended up leaving Iowa with a debut collection that was shortlisted for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. I'm just saying, you never know...

also, in defense of the program and the way they review apps--while second years help narrow down the pile--how is this any different than what happens at lit mags, where editorial assistants review submissions and forward the best ones to the editors?

At any rate, I know for a fact that Samantha Chang, director of the program, reads every single application (all 750+) herself. So you need not fear that you are not getting a fair read by someone on the faculty.

The only reason I would NOT apply to an MFA program is if I absolutely would NOT want to attend the school if I were accepted.

Thanks Kiiro. I'm in for poetry, though. I've no idea how competitive that is, and at this point it doesn't really matter. I'm stoked to be going. And congrats on Fresno, they have a great faculty. I live a couple hours away from Fresno and have spent a bit of time on their campus, and I must warn you that if you haven't been to CA before, Fresno is not what you expect. It's definitely no LA or San Francisco. The central valley is major farm country, and Fresno was built on that. That said, the campus has a good community, the program is supposed to be very supportive, and the weather is great.
