Hmm, that is very weird indeed. Are there any ways that you can think of that they might have procured your email? Maybe writing conferences or workshops? Do schools share information about applicants with each other? Are they even allowed to without your authorization? Here is my head scratcher/conspiracy theory MFA moment. A few weeks back, the Dept. Chair for one of the programs that I applied to called to offer me congratulations and a spot in the program. I was pleased as punch. We chatted for a little bit, and as we were wrapping up, the dept. chair said something to the effect of, "Well, I hope you choose us, but it looks like you have a lot of schools to hear back from." I didn't ask for clarification at the time, but it definitely caught my ear. They didn't say something generic and broad like "You probably have other schools you're looking to hear back from as well." I wouldn't have thought twice about something like that. Although person's exact words escape me, I got the distinct impression that they knew the other schools where I'd applied. Curious, I looked back at the school's online application, and there was indeed a slot where they asked what other schools I applied to. Thing is, I'm pretty certain I would have left that blank as I don't see why a school would need to know that (and if I had filled the slot, I would have just named one or two other schools). My actual application was locked, so i couldn't check to see for sure. I can't think of any other way that they would know. The only possibility I can think of is my GRE scores, and if ETS sent a list of all the schools where I'd sent my scores to be reported. It's not really a big deal to me if a school knows where I've applied, though I'd prefer if schools have access to that sort of information that they be up front about it. At the time that it happened, I sorta felt like I'd caught the chair letting something slip. But, hey, I'm an imaginative kind of guy. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe the chair just worded things strangely. Makes you wonder, though .
I know there was some talk yesterday about weird UW summer classes emails. I got one of those too. The very weird part? I never applied to UW. I never even contacted them about possibly applying. I'm actually wondering how the hell they got my email address because I haven't applied to any Washington state school (I live in Washington) and would never in a million years go to UW because I'm a WSU Cougar through and through.... Now I'm wondering who tipped them off about my desire to go to an MFA program... Creepy.
