I'm envious, I haven't gotten my Alabama rejection yet. I tried calling but got voicemail. I don't like voicemail. I want that last rejection so I know not to have hope for this year and focus more on next. I need that sense of closure.

Re: Final(ish) Tallies [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't know why it makes me feel better to write down the final tally, but it does. For fiction:

Rejected:
Cornell
Brown
Michener
Iowa
UMass
Johns Hopkins (presumably, no letter yet)

Waitlisted:
UVA
Michigan

In:
NYU

?:
Irvine (yes, I'm not giving up on it yet)

Not a great run, but not a terrible one either. Of course, the only school I applied to that doesn't give full funding (well...I guess Iowa doesn't either) is the one that accepted me. POOP. I refuse to take out loans for an MFA, so if I don't get a T.A. ship or something, the IN becomes N/A.

Alabama [In reply to] Can't Post

I've read that a few people have been rejected by Alabama? How and when did you receive your rejections? This school is basically my last hope, and I have yet to hear anything from them. They have had all my stuff since January. I think I even read that someone got a phone rejection from them. Why in the world would they call people to tell them they have been rejected? Or did the person call the school on their own?

Re: [renapoo] Final(ish) Tallies [In reply to] Can't Post

Honestly, I would say a waitlist from both UVA and Michigan is a terrific run! I'm not saying it's wrong to be a little disappointed that they're not all acceptances, but from where I'm standing I think it is AMAZING to be in the roughly top 3% of applicants to those two schools. Because of the subjectivity of the selection process, I think there is next to no difference between those initially accepted and those put on the waitlist (and hopefully accepted off it). Just wanted to say that I think your final tally is great and I seriously hope those two programs realize how lucky they'll be if they extend you official offers.

P.S. I'm not usually this ra-ra-cheerleadery to perfect blog strangers, but I do seriously believe that we neurotic, self-doubting writers need all the support we can get in this bitch of an application process. Cheers to everyone!

Re: [amday8] Final(ish) Tallies [In reply to] Can't Post

Amday,

You're right. It's just hard to keep perspective during this wicked process (wicked in a bad way, for all you bostonians). But it just goes to show how ridiculous all this is...in the top 3 or 5 or whatever % of applicants at 3 schools, applied to 10 programs, and I'm still not sure I'll be able to go anywhere this fall?!? Ridiculous.

And this is just to go to SCHOOL. To learn to be a better writer. Oh well, it's a competitive world.

Anyway, thanks so much for pointing out that in the grand scheme, things aint so bad. And you're right. We do need to be supportive of each other--anybody would go crazy during this process, whether they had a sensitive ego or not.

Renapoo, it is a crazy process to go through just to get a degree in the oh-so-lucrative field of creative writing. Makes me wonder if it's easier to get into law school or med school than get into a decent MFA program. I wonder if Seth (or anyone else) has ever put together the stats for that. It would be interesting to know.

Re: [amday8] Final(ish) Tallies [In reply to] Can't Post

well, depends on how you define "easier"...

i myself went to med school for a year (don't ask... turns out, i'm good at but hate science)... and to get in, i took:

4 terms of organic chemistry, 4 of inorganic chem, 4 of physics, 4 of math, biochem, immunology (not required), genetics, chordate anatomy and phylogeny, ecology (not specifically required), and evolution. along with all their accompanying labs. then, i took the MCAT (a 7 hour test that blows the doors of the GRE... i studied for 4 months). i volunteered 2x per week for 2 years and worked doing medical reseach on congestive heart failure. then, with my decent grades (about a 3.2) and excellent scores (98th percentile), i got an interview at 2 of 11 schools.... none of which were "top 10". i got a position at 1.

when i was applying, there were roughly 50,000 applicants for about 14,000 spots in US schools (classes ranged from 40 to 200 students in an entering class). a lot more spots, a lot more applicants. the percentages i'm not sure about... but here's the thing that i think makes it easier to get into CW programs: ONLY qualified applicants apply to med schools. they won't even CONSIDER your app unless you've taken and passed most of the above classes and are above a certain score on the MCAT.

however, an observation: that isn't a bad thing. when you apply, you know if you've got a good shot or not. in CW, it's all effin' subjective! and hope can be a killer.

My Alabama rejection was via the postal service, at the end of last week. Something like March 9th or 10th received in Virginia.

V1ctorya- I know what you mean about closure...I waited on UMass's forever...I felt complete when it finally arrived:)

Best of luck to everyone still waiting.

Re: [renapoo] Final(ish) Tallies [In reply to] Can't Post

This sort of list feels purely solipsistic, so here's my piece and then I'm gone from the boards:

ACCEPTED:
Wisconsin
Oregon
Maryland

WAIT-LISTED:
Michigan
Virginia
Minnesota

REJECTED:
Cornell
Michener Center

I'm going to Wisconsin. Yay!
As soon as I learned more about it, the program in Madison quickly became my overall #1 choice.
I've written to all the other programs (some of them weeks ago).
Best of luck to everyone, especially waitlisted folks. Spots will open up!

Re: [Tapeworm] Alabama [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi There,
I posted that I got a phone rejection from Alabama, but it was only because I called them. I also got a rejection in the mail a few days later. I'm in fiction, and I don't know what is going on with the poets, but I think they made their decisions a while ago. It's possible that you've been wait listed, and if you call them on Monday the secretary will probably tell you your status.

I just got an email from Monatan because I emailed them on Friday. (I'm in for poetry.) They said that everything was being delayed because their faculty has been traveling or something. Real letters will be mailed out this week & next.

Thera, congratulations! Any word on funding? (There are a couple of tricks you can do to take some of the bite out of out-of-state tuition even if you don't get a TA though). Missoula is in full on spring thaw mode and pretty bustling lately--the after-party for Aimee Bender's reading last Friday at Kevin Canty's house turned into a mass MFA exodus to the VFW for karaoke, today is softball practice and tonight is another reading. Let me know if you have any questions and I'd be happy to answer them.

Yeah, I got the Montana email too, in for fiction. No conclusive word on funding, but I'll be passing anyway and most likely heading to UVA. To those on the waitlists for Ohio State and Oregon, I've recently passed on their offers, so there should be one more spot opening up.

Today was a double rejection day, from Oregon and Houston. The letters weren't bad, but Houston's envelope was hand written in really big, round letters. That seemed a little odd.

One more rejection to go, from Indiana--then my waiting is totally done.

Did anyone else get an e-mail from UW asking them if they wanted to come early to get a jump start on summer classes?

I have no idea if I’m in or out, and this e-mail bothers me…. false hope… kiss the sky.

NYU-Poetry [In reply to] Can't Post

NYU waitlist in Poetry. Postmarked 3/16, arrived today. No mention of list length or my position on it, though it stated that they accepted 17 poets and 25 fiction writers. They hadn't called me before, so this was a very pleasant surprise vs. the rejection I was expecting. I have huge respect for their faculty, so I'm genuinely flattered by this. April 16th is getting complicated.

And for people waiting to hear from SAIC--according to a faculty member late last week, they had not officially finalized their acceptance list, so I wouldn't put too much faith in previous reports about people being accepted there by phone.

A little pointer...

By now, most of you have either heard yay or nay from your schools and are considering visiting to get a sense of the new town you might be living in for the next two or three years.

And (what a surprise!) we have a topic for that discussion.
