Hmmkay, well now I'm worried. My status has changed on the New Hampshire WebCat to say "Waiting for Final Dean Approval". Sounds good, right? But that's exactly what Tapeworm's said a couple weeks ago and poor Tape was rejected...what am I to think!?

I'm sorry--for some idiotic reason I replied to a post called "University of Arizona." I was actually talking about UNCG. I did apply to U of A, but I don't think anyone's heard from them yet.

I wouldn't over think it. You'll know when they tell you, I suppose. You can always send them an e-mail asking what it means...

Anyway, Today is the day Florida sent out e-mails last year... please e-mail, fall in my little online box.

I just got an email from UNCG letting me know that they're forwarding my application to the department for review. I mailed the application out the 2nd week in January so I was thinking that I should have heard something by now -- and I was worried. But now I feel better. Though in a few weeks, I'm sure I'll be back to my usual state of panic.

Iowa Nonfiction [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey all -- just got off the phone with Iowa Nonfiction. I applied to both the Writers' Workshop and NWP and after I put in one application online, I found out I could only officially apply for one. So in essence I've unofficially applied to IWW.

ANYWHO... the point is that I called the NWP to find out what my status was and if I should contact admissions to transfer my online application to IWW (since IWW has all my other stuff) and the Nonfiction people said that letters will go out on Friday. Don't know if that's just rejection letters or what...she didn't ask for my name and I didn't ask her (I was too afraid to!). She did ask where I lived though and when I said Washington state, she said "Oh, then you should get your letter Monday or Tuesday." So it sounds like they really mean this Friday and that's not just lip service.

thanks a bunch for the info :-) I was doing OK w/this whole thing this year til that one person posted that they got into like 5 schools--including my top choice, UNCG, plus one other I applied to (Purdue)-- WITH funding! Then I kinda crashed, I don't know why but I just felt bleh. I've been sitting here at work telling myself repeatedly NOT to crack and call UNCG and ask if they've read my stories yet... I know they must get like a million people calling them and I don't want to be annoying.

As in the Barry Lutz show? Totally.

Also, I’ve still received exactly nothing. I keep trying to tell myself that it’s because I’m in CA and it takes longer for mail from the Midwest to reach me, but come on now.

p.s. I'm in Boston, so uh according to my shaky grasp of U.S. geography, we're equidistant from the midwest...? Er. Sort of?

that IS some shaky geography. maybe equidistant from Iowa, but from Michigan/Pennsylvania/Ohio/Indiana/Illinois/et al, Boston is much much closer.

Laughter helps. I took one of my fiancee's undershirts and wrote REFUSAL (a la UWisc) in red Sharpie across the chest, then wore it to amuse myself. Later, my housemate and I watched several old episodes of The State over a bottle cheap wine. It helped.

As for the Midwest, it's a bit farther from CA than Boston; I know this because I used to live in Boston, and my parents (who live in Ohio) used to visit me all the time. So I moved across the great parental divide to CA, and I've been undisturbed ever since. ; )

Strangelet,

I was feeling the exact same way yesterday. Today, I decided to be proactive (ugh, hate that word--it reminds me of work!) and get in touch with students from the school I'm waitlisted at with questions. Maybe you could try the same thing! It's really made me feel much more in control of things and reminded me that, when it comes down to it, we choose the schools just as much as they choose us.

Don't feel bad about shaky geography. :) I *seriously* spent weeks thinking UVA was near Richmond and/or D.C. because I decided Charlottesville was a suburb of the state capital...and thought the state capital was near the nation's capital (I think I was thinking of Maryland). The three are in a two-hour triangle but that's not "suburb" by my definition. The other great example of my geography naïveté was when I began researching which universities have Trader Joes near them, I figured out where Greensboro was in relation to...well, the southeast states in general.

I could argue that I'm naïve because I live near Seattle, way up in the west corner of the U.S., but my parents have both taught geography/social studies AND road tripped around the country for their honeymoon. I should have learned something from those things.

(I should also clarify before I look shallow that the reason I was researching where TJs were: I started bitching one night during dinner that TJs had such healthy and easy-to-prepare foods—and I couldn't find that type of thing where I did my undergraduate work (300 miles from Seattle). My dad teased me, saying "Well, you better start looking up which grad schools have Trader Joes near them because you don't want to get stuck in that predicament again!")

Three hours until the mail comes....maybe less if the mail lady is efficient today.

I asked about the weather in Madison, which I'm scared of, since I've only ever weathered New York winters! I also asked about what the feeling of "community" is like in the program, since that's really really important to me, and no ranking I've seen has given me any sort of idea about that. One student responded immediately, was extremely nice--now I'm finding that I have more questions, and also that I'm feeling more confident and excited about the prospect of going there. I think asking about what teaching classes is like is next on my agenda.

Hey, cool. That's a really good idea-- oh did I reply to the wrong post-- about contacting students at (in my case) SIU. Also, those questions-- esp. about community feel-- are spot on. Thanks to everyone who replied; this forum seems like a very positive place, I'm happy to have found it.

As for my geography... well... sorry everyone ;) I plead guilty to feeling too lazy to check google maps before my post! I know both coastlines pretty well, but the stuff in the middle always gets me ;) The year I applied to Montana I was shocked and alarmed to learn that it borders Canada (I think) or at any rate is practically IN Canada, I mean it is much closer to Canada than I had thought previously...!

application list [In reply to] Can't Post

I am having a rough time waiting out here in CA. I keep hoping that I’ll get a wake up call at 6am from some eastern time zone school. No luck.

I had a cool time checking my application status at schools last night. Turns out I never completed by NC Greensboro app! Ha.

Since I only joined the list recently, here’s where I applied:
Montana
Colorado State
UNC Greensboro
Boise State
UMass Amherst
Michigan
Minnesota
And I swear I applied somewhere else too, but at the moment it escapes me.

I wish I didn’t work at a computer. I am visualizing schools calling me.

I have read that Hunter requires you to decide within a week, and to indicate on the phone whether or not you are interested in attending their program. Is this true? Anyone have first-hand experience, or know anyone that does?

The best thing about Charlottesville is that it ISN'T near either of those. Blacksburg is even better. If you want to do a museum or see a show or go to TJs you can drive to DC for a weekend or catch a flight to NYC for $150-200, but you avoid the daily hell of traffic, crime and professional a**holes.

I did my time in the cities. No mas.

That said, Seattle was my favorite city in the U.S. If I lost a bet with the devil and had to go urban, it would be there. However, since I beat him (by betting against OSU in the title game) I'll stick with my little college town in the mountains.

My UNH status now says that, too. But today I was contacted by the MFA secretary letting me know that they didn't have my application for financial aid and that the committee is meeting next week. I don't see why they would bother requesting materials if they had already rejected me, so I'm trying not to see this as impending doom.
