Ahhhh! Cornell!! That is awesome. I think their program is definitely one of the best out there...especially the funding. Having a chance to teach AND an internship with the literary mag? It's hard to beat.

congrats. And congrats to everybody else I missed.
Don't fret if you didn't get a call from Cornell yet: Last year everybody got there call on different days (don't have any clue why. Probably should hear by the end of this week, however).
Also, Cornell, like many schools, doesn't notify you if you are waitlisted; unless you have an actual rejection letter, you haven't been actually rejected....

congratulations! looking forward to meeting you when you visit!

and yes, as hopperfu said, i think different faculty members are assigned to make the calls and they call on different days. also, fiction and poetry work on completely different schedules....

No clue where Poetry is in the decision process, but I assume (based on, um, nothing) that it's similar.

Oh, I forgot:
Once you hear from schools that have accepted you, ask them if they have funding for visits. Many (most?) schools have small budgets to cover or defray travel expenses if you want to visit the program; they'll reimburse a certain amount. They'll also usually arrange for a place for you to stay (on someone's couch).

Re: Davis [In reply to] Can't Post

For anyone who applied to Davis, I predict that they'll start calling people next week. I deferred there last year, and heard on 2/14/06 that I was accepted.

On Thursday or Friday last week I got an email from the department admin saying they were "starting to admit students" and asking about my intentions next year. So I'm betting the first round of Davis admittees will start hearing soon.

Thanks!
They said I could be reimbursed (up to a certain point) for visiting, so I booked a flight right away. Not that I'm excited or anything...
I'll be there from March 9-13. I suppose we'll be meeting each other if you're around.

Question for Cornell people [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi!

Congrats to Sarah! For the rest of us waiting on Cornell, I thought of asking Hopper and Sybiline two questions:

1) Would it be possible for you guys to let us know via a post when Cornell has called all its acceptees? That would ease the pain of agonizing over every phone call every day for God knows how long...

2) Do you know whether any current or former Cornell MFAer was ever taken from the waitlist? It's such a small class that I tend to think that the chances of being taken off the waitlist are so slim...

Thanks !!!

L. A.

Re: [LateApplicant] Question for Cornell people [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not sure it would really be cool to do #1 (beside which - and this touches on your second question - it's not actually true until all eight people have actually accepted the offers, and as such, by the time I could state that with any confidence it wouldn't matter because all of the rejection letters would have gone out....)

As for #2, yes, people get in off the waitlist all of the time. In fact, I think it happens every year or two, sometimes more than one person. It's such a great program and has such wonderful funding that it is unusual, but it does happen. Cornell has not historically told people they are on the waitlist, so unless you actually recieve a rejection letter, it is possible that you are on the waitlist.

And while you are waiting for the phone to ring, to add to your agony, if I remember this right, the phone calls were not all made on the same day, and I think I got my call four or five days after Syb's... In other words, they may very well not have called all of the applicants yet.

Re: [HopperFu] Question for Cornell people [In reply to] Can't Post

(Mis)guided by anxiety, I sort of thought that you could tell us when the four fiction people have been called -- it would relieve the tension, I think. But I totally understand if you prefer not to! You guys have done so much for us already! Thanks for all the info and patience that you've put in these posts! You could be walled up in your Ivory Tower, and yet you guys come back to us mortals :)

Re: [LateApplicant] Question for Cornell people [In reply to] Can't Post

I can only really speak for fiction, and this is just speculation on my part since the faculty isn't at liberty to say when they've informed people, but I would imagine that they would probably have finished making the calls for first round acceptees by the end of the week, since the first call went out last Friday. However, as Hopperfu says, Cornell normally doesn't inform people if they're on the waitlist, so even if people aren't called the first round, there's still a chance of getting in.

Re: [plumagemour] Davis [In reply to] Can't Post

This is my first post. (Hi, everyone!) Apparently Davis is starting a day early to psyche people out, because I got an acceptance call at work today. I was pretty stunned and couldn't think of anything to ask. I didn't even ask, for example, if I have to decline/accept the offer by a certain date. Does anyone know how that usually works? I'm still waiting to hear from seven more schools.

Re: [Elise] Davis [In reply to] Can't Post

The official grad "acceptance date" is April 15th. I was the same way when I heard from OSU in January... but I guess all schools pretty much go by this date.

Thanks for the kind words! I'm sure I'll have some questions about Davis once the news starts to sink in. I applied in fiction, and the call was from Pam Houston. Are you in the MA program, plumagemour?

Congrats, Elise! I got a call from Pam last year and deferred to this year. Maybe we'll be in class together.

and p.s., there are cows there, but Davis doesn't smell like cows. it's actually an extremely cute little college town, and only a little over an hour's train ride into San Francisco.
