LittleCities, I have to make a decision about UMass (fiction) by the end of the week! I haven't been able to visit, so I'd love to hear how your trip went and what made it a "mixed bag" experience. Thanks so much.

Hey Sambrunel,
I hardly ever post here, but I saw that you were considering Creighton, and I just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth. I did my undergrad in creative writing there, and overall I had a very good experience. I will say that Susan Aizenberg is THE BEST creative writing teacher I've ever had. She's awesome. Also, it's refreshing (and a little surprising) to hear someone so pumped up about Omaha. It sounds like you've already done quite a bit of research, but let me know if you have any questions about CU or the city.

I'll add in that Omaha is a GREAT city. I loved it there. Great restaurants - Indian, Persian, Cajun, French...a lovely wine bar...yummy baked treats at Delice...the best ice cream in the Midwest...flour tortillas at Cali Taco...malt shops in pharmacies...amazing music at Saddle Creek or the 49er...Writer's Harvest readings at the yoga place, more readings at Jackson Street books...it's a wonderful, wonderful city.

Creighton has a lot of great writers on faculty...Mary Helen Stefaniak, Brent Spencer...it seems like a great place to work on your writing. And Creighton is consistently ranked as the best school in the midwest (and they've got some good sports teams!).

I saw some discussion of Bowling Green here...it's a lovely place. Great faculty. And I think the program is quite well-funded.

Re: [sambrunel] I'M IN! [In reply to] Can't Post

Sam: to weigh in a little on faculty at Montana, I had Karen Volkman for my senior thesis adviser in undergrad, and while her poetry is fascinating, she's very aloof and comes across as quite cold though I don't think she had any intention of doing so. Working with her was... well, quite awkward, and she never seemed to have criticism or suggestions about my poetry that I felt like jibed with what I was trying to do. That said, I was twenty and not a very smart reader of poetry (mine or anyone else's), whereas she seemed very strongly rooted in academic analysis of poetry, and we may not've been speaking the same language at that point. Now, as I've learned more, I'd probably appreciate her feedback quite a bit more.

Re: [sovietsleepover] I'M IN! [In reply to] Can't Post

It's tough, Soviet.

I have two friends (one from college and one from graduate school) who at one time or another went through the MFA program at Montana...only not in poetry, but in fiction. They really loved it and both of them loved the faculty and both of them have published extensively since then.

I love Missoula and I love the mountains and I love love love the faculty. Montana and Creighton's programs are only two years long...Indiana's is three...but I mean, does that extra year really make a difference? I mean, Iowa's program is the best and their students have the most publishing success, but it's only 2 years. Obviously, two years can be enough time to get a lot of good work done. So maybe I shouldn't make so much of that third year if I really love Montana?

I just got an email from the University of Arizona and it looks like I'm going to be accepted! I can hardly believe it! Is anyone else going there and has anyone else gone there or what do people have to say about their creative writing program?

Congrats! I go to UA now; I graduate in a month. There's been a fair amount of discussion here about the program in general, by me and others, but if you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

Hollins! [In reply to] Can't Post

I was accepted at Hollins (poetry) yesterday evening!

If anyone here is planning to go there, or knows anything at all about it, pm me.

Hopefully I can get funding straightened out...

I posted this in a different thread, but I thought I'd add it here too:

Accepted at Ohio State University, MFA in Creative Nonfiction, full tuition waiver, $12K stipend + subsidized health insurance (university pays 75%) in exchange for teaching one undergraduate writing course per quarter (composition and creative nonfiction).

Don't know about anyone else, but as of right now UMass' website tells me I'm still "applied" as does Emerson. I'm poetry, by the way. Still nothing from ASU, Indiana, BGSU, or UNH either. What's taking so long!? I can't wait until April, I'll cut my bleeping ear off...

UPDATE!!! Teresa Abney from Indiana just called me because they couldn't locate all of my info. Turns out it was strewn about on the committee table, so apparently I'm on the block right now. She said they're telling her late Feb early March to notify people. How they do it is call everyone first that has been accepted to offer them their package, etc. Then you have by April 15th to decide. If people turn it down they call down the list...yadda yadda...so cheer up! We won't hear a damn thing for another 4 weeks.

Yes, yes… but, I mean, there is something about the fact that it is Feb. that is making me jittery. I mean, the shit is going to start rolling in this month and early next month.

Re: [ecphraticknolls] I'M IN! [In reply to] Can't Post

yeah, i hear you. everyday i go to the mailbox. and everyday i get more and more upset with the water bill and the flyers for $20 oil changes. i'd gladly pay $25 or $30 for an oil change if it meant an end to end this waiting.

also, getting work done is next to impossible. and my master's thesis (a graphic novel, actually) is due in april.
