Re: [thunderbolt] (FSU) [In reply to] Can't Post

I am also one of those potential FSU waitlisters. I hear the whole process is moving slowly because of uncertain funding from the state. But I guess all we can do is wait, hence the term "waitlist."

I'm also waitlisted at Alabama, maybe, by the same status-hasn't-changed logic. That's apparently how they do it there. They just stick your application in some file-cabinet Limbo and don't tell you anything one way or another until they have all their spots filled or put you in one.

The only school that has actually told me directly that i'm on their wait list, and where I am on it, is Vanderbilt, because they are very very nice people who value the sanity of their prospective students.

I've actually been accepted at Arizona, but the funding outlook is uncertain and I may not be able to go because of that. So I really need one of these others to pull through! Come oooon, Vandy!

Also, I'm expecting to get a waitlist letter from Illinois any day now.

Long story short, I am sick of waitlists. I am the queen of Almost-But-Not-Quite. I should get some sort of award for the most waitlists ever acquired in one year. I feel like maybe a nice, shiny trophy would take some of the sting away. But I'm probably wrong.

Hey, with several waitlist spots, you have a very, very good chance of getting into at least one of your picks. Last year I had ONE waitlist spot at a prestigious school, and they wouldn't tell me where I was on the list--although I eventually figured out that I was at least four down since they let in two off the list and I think one turned their spot down (if I remember correctly.) I'm willing to bet that you'll find yourself with more than one choice in a month.

But it is purgatory. It is. I'm sorry you have to go through that.

Ha! Just as I'm posting in the waitlist thread, I get an e-mail: I'm waitlisted at Hollins. Yay! A non-rejection! :) Since they only fund around half the class, I'm guessing this one's not going to work out even if I get in, but I'm still very happy.

Wow, clarabelle. That sounds so frustrating. You should take lots of bubble baths and play some whale songs, or something. But germericanqt is right: you've a good shot at at least one school. And Vandy! That's great!

I don't "get" bubble baths. After you've scrubbed and cleaned your moving parts, aren't you essentially soaking in dirty water? Ewww...

Re: [germericanqt] (FSU) [In reply to] Can't Post

Wow, congrats, germericanqt! I really like Hollins's program. Enough that I applied to it. And as I haven't gotten an email yet, I'm guessing I'm probably not waitlisted. Which is, oddly enough, almost refreshing.

And thanks, you guys, for your supportive words! I really hope you all are right. And hey, even though we haven't been accepted--yet--we still made it onto the very small waitlists of very small programs (as MFAs are, almost by definition, always small). I think this means we're all pretty awesome writers, even if nothing comes of it. So yay us!

Haha! Either you get bubble baths or you don't, I guess. They seem to be more like a foot bath for the body than something you'd do to get clean. You know: cleansing the soul. Hence the whale songs.

The e-mail was a response to an inquiry, not a mass mailing, so don't give up hope yet. :)

Ooooh, whale songs and bubbles! Sounds like heaven. Except I might have trouble obsessively checking my email in the bath. Good thing I don't have a laptop, cause then I'd probably try to take it in there with me. Where I would inevitably end up dropping it in the water, effectively frying it, killing my access to email, and possibly electrocuting myself. But I don't have a laptop, so no worries.

I like how (in true MFA applicant fashion) electrocuting yourself was the least of your worries upon dropping a laptop in the tub...just after losing access to email LOL

But of course! Writing before health, always! And writing is inextricably tied to email access in my head right now. See the below flow chart:

email --> MFA notification --> writing --> sense of well-being and fulfillment

Re: [MissEsquire] FSU [In reply to] Can't Post

Actually, Miss Esquire, there is. I emailed Tara Stamm several times about this, and she told me point blank that there were 30 people on the entire creative writing waitlist, MFA + PhD, and that so far they had made 17 offers of admission (12 for the MFA, and 5 for PhD). I also was told through email from another source inside FSU (that I'm not going to name), that among the Ph.D peeps, 3 poets and 2 fiction writers had been accepted so far, and that this was much lower than in years past, and that after the dep't had heard news about the funding situation from the Florida State Legislature, this would determine how many more offers they would be able to give. Could be 10, could be 0, but that's one of the main reasons for the delay, besides the 15 April deadline of course. Suerte Chicos!

Alabama [In reply to] Can't Post

Email from Joel Brouwer this afternoon - waitlist for poetry. Better than a rejection. And nice to finally know something.

ps - all you poetry acceptees: I hear it gets way hot in Alabama.
You should really choose one of those northern schools instead:)

A northern school will open up soon. I'm giving up my seat shortly. It should have a ripple effect somewhere down the line.

waitlists [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all,

just wanted to let you know that I removed myself from Wisconsin-Madison's and Vanderbilt's poetry waitlists today, so someone might possibly be moving up? Don't know if this helps at all, but thought I'd let you know!

Cheers!
