Felix,

I think just one more question, what does Brown do to help people get published because we know Brown people get published.

can you guys please carry this conversation to another thread? I don't think it has anything to do with "I'm IN!"

and really, it's kind of sick to think of programs based on whether they can "do something to get you published."

work really, really hard, and write something great, submit it to 30 mags, and it'll get published. it doesn't matter if you have an mfa! writing isn't and shouldn't be academized and politicized like other liberal arts fields.

seriously--and i know this is the wrong thread for this, sorry--but you're responsible for getting your work published, not your mfa program. (even if your program does help you, it only means your self-made friends will talk about you behind your back) :)

Re: [zamboro] I'M IN! [In reply to] Can't Post

Zamboro and Kabochantico, I don't think anyone needs to come down on me for asking about opportunities to be published through the MFA experience. The fact is that I know that the one of the draws to Iowa and New York programs (at least for fiction writers) is the frequency of being discovered by publishers (AS WELL AS the phenomenal development of writers that happens in and outside of the class). There are several alumni from my school who have gone to Columbia, Iowa and NYU and come out with book deals or gotten book deals while still in their programs so it isn't "sick" that I ask. That's a really harsh criticism of my inquiry. We're writers. Most of us want to be published. If we're going to MFA programs and expect to leverage the degree into a teaching job, we HAVE to be published -- at least twice before we even become competitive for professor appointments. These are facts and whether or not it is an issue that contributes to one's choice of school, we should be interested in what exposure we get to publishers or education in becoming published we get from a school. I don't know how long the two of you have been in the writing world but I am new to the serious, professional writing world and don't know everything. Do not assume that everybody writing on this board has your extensive knowledge when you respond especially if your response is a castigation.

Come on guys, give Audrey a break. We're all allowed to have different priorities for ourselves and our search for an MFA program. There's nothing wrong with her wondering about the publishability of a program, just like some worry about funding, about reputation, about location, etc.

Also, this is the I'm IN thread and I haven't seen a recent posting about that, this whole past dialogue seems more suited for the MFA concerns thread.

Re: [Audreyhurston] I'M IN! [In reply to] Can't Post

Audrey -
Don't sweat it. You asked a totally valid question. I don't want to slag on people who want an MFA solely to improve their writing; I think that really has to be what it's all about. But for those with few connections and little means (those who have to work 40+ hours per week before and after MFA program), going back to trying to get past the slush pile, post-MFA, can be pretty panic-inducing. Anyway, your question - how much exposure to publishers and agents an MFA program provides - is one I wish I would have considered a bit more seriously when deciding which program to attend, for sure. I know people who have left MFA programs with agents, and I know people who have left MFA programs with no connections whatsoever. Guess who's publishing more readily? It doesn't always work like that, of course, but that doesn't mean it's not a valid consideration.

I mailed my application to Eastern Washington on Tuesday and they accepted me on Friday by e-mail. I was out of town, checked my e-mail on Saturday, and just laughed. Three day turnaround. :)
