Re: [Khalilah] I'm IN! [In reply to] Can't Post

thanks, Khalilah. That's very kind of you. I'm 85% sure it's where I'll end up, but I'm going to wait to hear from my other schools before making a final decision. But at least I know that I'd be very happy there, even if I don't get into any other programs.

I'm IN! [In reply to] Can't Post

I got accepted via a phone call from Penn State yesterday. Poetry. It's such a relief to have that one acceptance, but I think I am now even more eager/anxious to hear from my top choices!

(I hope I'm doing this right. I just signed up here today, and this is my first post. This whole MFA thing is so exciting!)

Is it my imagination or are the majority of calls going out to poets? Are fiction candidates generally told later than poets?

I got a call saying that I was the top candidate for the mfa at wvu but they still needed my gre scores which were on the way but they wanted me to fax them to them that day. Any thoughts on if i can take that as an acceptance or they just wanted to get my scores?

Hey lbeans- Sounds to me like you're in and they just need to get the GRE scores to meet the grad school's requirements for admission. Did they give you other info that would imply that you are in? Like, telling you about the program, funding info, visiting, saying, "we'd like to accept you, congratulations" lol etc. Regardless, congrats on being the top candidate!

Which genre?

If they said you were the top candidate, it sounds like you are a fax away from an offer. The GRE scores are for the graduate school requirements and for some schools, to qualify you for funding.

Congrats llbeans. Mark Brazaitis is a talented writer and a thoughtful workshop leader, and James Harms is a hell of a nice guy.

Wow, I thought that an MFA program wouldn't tell candidates such things as "You're the top candidate for the MFA." I mean, congratulations llbeans--it must feel fantastic! --But still, I thought that kind of thing was off limits? What would be the reason for telling someone that, I mean, what about the rest of the people in the program?

I don't see anything wrong with it. It would be naive to think that we're all equally tops. And naive to want to feel that way. If the program only gives fellowships to their top candidates, then it would be obvious who they are (unless everyone keeps their fellowships secret). If you're taken off the waitlist or notified late in the season, then obviously you're not a top candidate. If a program tells someone they are their #1 choice, it's probably because they really, really want them to come.

Re: [yeahyeahyeah] I'M IN! [In reply to] Can't Post

Well... I suppose what I mean is, sure there's a heirarchy, that's obvo, but my dad was in charge of a program and would never do that to the top student (pressure) or to those in the upper portion because they might tear each other apart. And tiered programs, with their unhealthy competition, etc., around money, etc. Anyway, I was told something similar about a wait list, that I was the top person on it (not for writing, for painting, at School of the Art in Chicago, years ago). And then the person who'd said it said, "Oh my God I wasn't supposed to tell you that." I'm assuming we fundamentally disagree.
Sorry lbean. Congratulations to you if you read this! Please don't take this as a a put-down. I probably should have kept it to myself... Congrats! If I heard that I would be on cloud nine, which is where I hope you are!!!

Yikes! Didn't mean to cause an uproar! It definitely was not an official acceptance and maybe they weren't supposed to tell me that! I just wanted to see if people thought I could take that as a good sign. I will update if it does become official. Oh yeah, it's in poetry!

I received my first notification of eight last week, and I'm in at Pitt for poetry. But alas, they have no funding for me. Fingers crossed and seven to go.
