Wow it feels really good to finally post here. I'm in at McNeese off the waitlist! Tuition paid and TA position with lovely 3 year stipend. I am VERY excited! Still in some waitlist limbo, but I've always been very excited about the program at McNeese. I think this is my happy ending! Until today, I wasn't sure I would be going to graduate school at all. I am just thrilled, hopefully I can stop checking these message boards soon. Good Luck Everybody!

Hey Stacylynn- I just turned down a spot at McNeese. It was a tough choice because it seems like such a great place. I'm sure you'll love it!

Yesterday I found out that I'm off the waitlist at the University of New Mexico. I figured I wasn't getting in since I hadn't heard much from them. I'm really excited, but I already accepted Antioch. I have a lot to think about this weekend. I don't want to make a decision until I know what the financial aid is going to be like.

Notre Dame [In reply to] Can't Post

Holy hell-
I found out today, at this late date, that I've been accepted to Notre Dame for fiction!!!!

I opened the email this morning during homeroom, and since then it's been nearly impossble to focus on teaching the high schoolers.

last minute question [In reply to] Can't Post

I just found out that I received a fellowship for next year, which will be my first year in the program. My program already fully funds everyone through assistantships, but the fellowship would mean I didn't have to teach my first year. The other difference is I would be funded through the summer, but I would be required to take classes. Otherwise, I think the monthly stipend would work out to be about the same or maybe a little bit more than the t.a. stipend. My question is, some people have said that it's better to get the teaching experience--in fact, one person told me she asked not to be considered for a fellowship so that she could get extra teaching experience. However, I would be teaching anyway during my second and third years. Should I be at all concerned about missing teaching my first year? I have until April 30th to decide whether I will take the fellowship. I'm a fiction writer.

Re: [Blanca78] last minute question [In reply to] Can't Post

TAKE THE FELLOWSHIP.
TAKE THE FELLOWSHIP.
TAKE THE FELLOWSHIP.
Your first year of teaching, especially if you're teaching comp, is likely going to take up WAY more time than you could ever think possible. Take the fellowship and get in some teaching experience in the second and third years. That first year of your not teaching isn't going to make ANY difference with relation to getting a teaching job (for one: chances of getting a teaching job without an extensive publishing record are slim anyway, and if you spend your entire MFA trying to balance teaching with coursework and writing, that's going to cut into your writing time, which is likely going to be detrimental to your publishing record. For another: a fellowship is going to look just as good on the CV as would an extra year of teaching experience).
IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS: TAKE THE FELLOWSHIP, GET IN THERE, AND WRITE YOUR TAIL OFF WHILE YOU HAVE TIME.

Wow, thank you so much for the advice! That is what I was thinking, but just wanted to make sure I considered everything--at first it didn't look like I would get the fellowship, so I got used to/excited about teaching, which I think is why I had questions
. But I will take the fellowship (doesn't that sound like some mystical rite-of-passage?). Thanks!

You bet. Normally I don't tend to toss around absolutes, but the fellowship sounds like an incredible opportunity - and you'll still manage to get in some teaching, too - congratulations!!!!!

Soooo happy for you! I'm finally to the point where I not only don't expect to get into JHU, but I actually think it's better in the long run that I didn't get off the waitlist (not saying I wouldn't accept, just saying I'm in a good place now), so really, I felt a vicarious, enormous leap of heart at your news. Congratulations. I hope your MFA is everything you are hoping for, and perhaps I'll join you next year. (ND is on my list to apply to this time around.)
