TAKE THE FELLOWSHIP. TAKE THE FELLOWSHIP. TAKE THE FELLOWSHIP. Your first year of teaching, especially if you're teaching comp, is likely going to take up WAY more time than you could ever think possible. Take the fellowship and get in some teaching experience in the second and third years. That first year of your not teaching isn't going to make ANY difference with relation to getting a teaching job (for one: chances of getting a teaching job without an extensive publishing record are slim anyway, and if you spend your entire MFA trying to balance teaching with coursework and writing, that's going to cut into your writing time, which is likely going to be detrimental to your publishing record. For another: a fellowship is going to look just as good on the CV as would an extra year of teaching experience). IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS: TAKE THE FELLOWSHIP, GET IN THERE, AND WRITE YOUR TAIL OFF WHILE YOU HAVE TIME.
