Re: [Blanca78] wait lists [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
So, since lots of people here are getting in off wait lists (including myself), I was wondering how other people feel about potentially going to a school they got into off a wait list. Basically, I'm deciding between a school that accepted me with great enthusiasm that I have grown to love, and a last minute wait-list acceptance to a (slightly) more prestigious program that was originally one of my top three, if not my #1 choice. At this point I'm leaning toward the former school, partly because I feel more psychologically secure going somewhere that I know has much enthusiasm for my work. Is anybody else thinking about this issue? Or am I the only neurotic one out there?

p.s. the programs are very similar in other respects--both fully funded (although one's in a more expensive metro area), three years, similar size, three genres...

I wouldn't worry at all about getting in off the waitlist, in terms of how you'll be received. You have to understand that to be waitlisted at many programs means that you're more than qualified for admission, it's just that there are usually more highly qualified candidates than available funded spots. For instance, if you're waitlisted at a competitive program, you're still likely in the top 5-7% of applicants...meaning that you were ranked ahead of more than 90% of the applicants.

In short, don't take any of it personally. Look at it this way: assuming you go on the job market one day, you might as well get used to it, because it's fairly common for folks with two books to be "rejected" for a job. Doesn't make these folks bad writers--it's just that the other 50 candidates all had at least two books as well, but there was only one job to offer.

Re: [gcsumfa] wait lists [In reply to] Can't Post

This is my thought as well.

I was on a waitlist to a program (where I just accepted, Yay!). But according to them, they only take 4 applicants per my genre (nonfiction) and I was #6, or 2nd on the waiting list. I'm not worried about not being their favorite because I love the program and the city, and being 6th on the list still makes me feel like they had full confidence in my work, but simply didnt have enough slots to accept me right away.

I'd go with the program that seems best for you, and if one is openly more excited about you I'd go for it, but I don't think that coming off of a waitlist means that they're any less excited.

I haven't confirmed yet (with UNLV) but plan to do so by Friday. I'm in fiction, too. Can't wait to meet you!

UNCW [In reply to] Can't Post

Heard from UNCW for nonfiction today, with their apologies for losing my application. They didnt give the funding info yet, but I'm still excited, though now confused because I was thinking I'd be going to Hunter in the fall. Either way, I'm grateful for the dilemma.

I'm In [In reply to] Can't Post

I called Stonecoast last Friday to check the status of my application and was told I had been accepted (fiction). Official notice of my acceptance was visible on their PeopleSoft site today (exhale).

Because of this news, I contacted Spalding University and notified them I would be declining my acceptance. So hopefully that will open up a slot for someone else.

Tally so far:

Accepted: University of Alaska Anchorage, Spalding, UNO & Stonecoast (have declined all offers but the last)
Rejected: Queens University, Lesley University & Murray State
Waiting On: Pacific University, Fairleigh Dickinson, Bennington & Warren Wilson (though I presume the last two will be rejections)

Good luck everyone!

SFSU email [In reply to] Can't Post

I received an acceptance email from SFSU's MFA program (poetry) last night (around 4:30pm PST). This is the first I've heard of being accepted there. I am excited but cautious about becoming overjoyed. I am wondering if any of you received this email as well? Had you been notified earlier? Can I get excited?

With cautious optimism,

Vanessa, they lost my application, too! I finally got an acceptance yesterday after much emailing and resending of materials... Nice to have it semi-wrapped up now, but if they come through with funding it's going to complicate my decision. I want to live near the beach!

Great funding. Seems like a good program.

whittling it down [In reply to] Can't Post

I've turned down offers from the following:

University of Maryland
Colorado State University
Montana
SIU-Carbondale
VCU
McNeese

Deciding between UNCG, Arkansas, and waiting to hear from UVA wait list. Pretty sure I'm headed to NC, and excited about it. Almost hoping I don't get any more good news so I won't have another big decision to make...who'd have ever thought I'd dread getting more good news in life? Wowzers.

Good luck with final decisions everyone.

American [In reply to] Can't Post

I got my first (and probably only) acceptance to American's MFA program this year. But no money. Thus I get to tell them no! It feels amazing! I'm kind of starting to realize that if I get my MFA it needs to be many more years down the road... But I am not unwanted!!

Good luck everyone!

Re: [calowa99] SFSU email [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Calowa,

I got an acceptance from SFSU by phone for fiction from Maxine Chernoff on 4/3, and then today I got a letter in my PO box, dated 4/10 and postmarked 4/12, from the CW dept. It asked me to let them know by 4/30 and it suggested that something more official, about registering, will be coming from the grad office soon. So, I'm guessing a similar letter should be in your hands by now; if not, I'd get in touch with them and see what's up. Who was the email from, if I may be so bold?

(it should probably be noted that I'm a current MA poetry student at SFSU--I don't see why that would mean an earlier acceptance, but I suppose it's possible. And, of course, the different genre could be part of it.)

Oh, and congratulations! It's a fun place.
