Wait listed at U of Virginia, via email. I'm happy to be wait listed there and at Vandy, since both programs fully fund all their students. Meaning, if you're in, you're really in. I can imagine that being wait listed at places that don't offer full funding to everyone is about like being told that, while they like you, you won't be going there because they've already given their money to those at the top. Anyway, cool. I've got one school left to hear from, and I'm in a good place.

I went to college in a small town close to Mankato, and I have to say that it's not exactly a city thriving with culture and excitement. Minneapolis is wonderful, but it's at least an hour and fifteen minutes away. One of my recommenders, however, was very familiar with the program and had nothing but nice things to say about it. Personally, though, I'd go with Vancouver.

I'm also waitlisted at NYU for poetry.

The bummer of it is, I imagine even if we were eventually to get in, there probably wouldn't be a whole lot of funding to go around.

Lucky. ;) I'm waitlisted at Johns Hopkins, which doesn't offer much aid (as far as I know) so I'm guessing that even if I do get in, I won't be able to afford it.

Oh. I just went and checked the website. Apparently the last thing I read about the program (that a few, competitive scholarships are offered) was outdated. Well. That makes me feel a little better.

What doesn't is the fact that there is a seemingly long wait list. But I don't know anything about the wait list or where I am on it yet. I guess for now I'll buck up, even though it's a long shot and it's looking like my only shot.

Congratulations! I didn't think Sarah Lawrence offered funding to anyone. I received seven grand in SLC "gift aid" for being poor, is that what you received?

I just got accepted to Antioch (low-res) by phone for fiction. They said it seems like the program was "discovered" this year and they got a flood of applications. They decided to accept some applicants for the December 08 residency and that's what I was offered. Antioch wasn't one of my top choices, but he said that Dorothy Allison will be one of the guest faculty members for the Dec residency--she's one of my favorite writers ever. They want a decision by April 7.

U of Chicago's MAPH Writing Option [In reply to]	Can't Post

I'm in at the University of Chicago for the MAPH's writing option. I applied to a host of other schools, all MFA programs, and so far have been waitlisted at Johns Hopkins (fiction) and interviewed at Bard, with no further word...yet, and have received a sea of rejections. The word is still out on a few schools, but so far Chicago is my only acceptance.

Chicago's program hasn't been mentioned much on any of these threads, and I'm wondering if anyone has insider knowledge of their creative writing department (for fiction: Mark Slouka--who's on leave this year but back next?--, Nic Pizzilatto, Elizabeth Crane), the program in general, or thoughts on how the MAPH holds up against an MFA. It's a one-year program, and I'm psyched about the classes that you take alongside workshop. I think it could be really enriching and challenging, but I want to make sure I'll have a good amount of time to devote to writing fiction, as that's my primary reason for going back to school.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the program? Is anyone thinking about doing the MAPH Writing Option, or know anyone who has?

yeah, that's what I got. and then a bunch of Federal loans that I truly thought I wouldn't have gotten. also, I'm still missing a form in my financial aid packet so depending on how that pans out I could be eligible for more. it just takes the edge off that I don't have to go to a bank to pay for all my tuition upfront!

annenyc, I did the MAPH w/Writing Option a couple of years ago. While I had a good experience, particularly with the faculty (I was there for poetry), I wouldn't recommend the program to everyone. It's expensive, for one - I was lucky to get one of their few fellowships, otherwise I wouldn't have gone. It is a very, very intensive year, and while I was focusing on my writing for my thesis, I wished I had had more time to do so - thus my MFA applications this year. I don't think MAPH is comparable to an MFA for the most part, though you are able to teach at many community colleges with an MA, if that's one of your goals. There's even a class that helps prepare you for that track.

I'm in for the MAPH writing option too. It seems like a really interesting program, but I am concerned about a) expenses (what else is new?) and b) workload. I don't know a whole lot, but I've heard that MAPH students have the most stressful workload of anyone at U Chicago. It's a lot of intense work crammed into a single year, so I don't know how much writing time there will be left over. But I've heard that for establishing a solid knowledge base for continued graduate study, it's really great as long as you don't look at the program as a guaranteed in to the Chicago PhD program or something. I think I'm going to visit in April and talk to some of the current students, how about you?

thanks! yes, I think so. I'm still waiting to hear from 4 other schools but only one of them would be a deal breaker at this point, and they would have to seriously woo me with $ and opportunities.

although, I was in no way expecting/planning on moving to NYC so now my brain is slowly itemizing everything I own and that I will have to get rid of to live in a tiny apartment in the big city. that's going to be the tough part!

One of my best friends was just admitted into this program. He is also unsure of the expenses. Apparently he got a four-page acceptance letter. Insane!

Never thought of this as a writing degree, though... Isn't it more about social policy study, etc, or am I mixing things up?

Save your money. The reason the MAPH isn't mentioned on these threads is because it's not a serious writing program. It's not even a halfway serious writing program. Two out of seven courses in creative writing with adjunct instructors hired to teach undergraduates? That's an afterthought, not a program. Jeeze, you could get your MBA and take the same number of creative writing classes.

In the long email they sent me, they were very clear that the MAPH program isn't meant to be like an MFA program. From what I understand, the main thing with the writing option is that you get to write a creative thesis at the end of the year. One shouldn't go into this program expecting it to be comparable to an MFA program as far as the intense focus on writing. Many people use this program to prepare them for further graduate work, whether in writing or not. In the end, it is a reputable school that could help you prepare for a PhD program, but for someone whose ultimate goal is acceptance to an MFA program, I wouldn't count on this program. That's just too much money and not enough writing time.

If you are interested in an MA in Creative Writing, I am finishing mine at Northwestern at night, and the program has been great. Big name faculty come each year, Aleksandar Hemon, Stuart Dybek, Naeem Murr, etc, and they are still taking applications for Fall. The entire program is based on workshop, independent study, a few literature / craft stories, and thesis.

They don't fund, but most people are working professionals with day jobs. What I did was get a job at the university, which then paid 80% of my tuition, so I think the MA cost me about $3,000 total. I know at least six people in the program who work at the university, so that's a great way to go.

If anyone is interested in talking more about it, let me know! I am off to Oregon in the Fall and I'm positive there is no way I would've gotten in there if I hadn't done this program first.
