Wow, congrats pasdechat! Details, details! Did you get a call or email? Just now? Did they say anything about if/how they're notifying other people? Any info is appreciated.

That's ok! I'm a little on edge about NYU, which is why I sounded so rabid. I'll probably be really obnoxious and just give them a call myself today or tomorrow...

The New School [In reply to] Can't Post

I got an acceptance package from The New School today, with a little money. The letter is dated March 13. They want to know by April 5. Think they'll extend that to late April? I want to make a trip to NYC the third or fourth weekend ... That was my last school to hear from, too. All told I did pretty well:
  • The New School, in w/ partial funding
  • UNH, in w/ funding still unknown
  • Columbia, in w/ partial funding
  • Hunter, in but needed to accept that day so they can go to hell
  • ODU, in w/ some funding
  • Hollins, rejected
  • Pitt, in w/ no funding
Hindsight being what it is, if I knew Pitt had next to no money, I probably wouldn't have applied. If I knew Hunter were a bunch of wankers, I wouldn't have applied. I'm leaning heavily toward Columbia, but I'd like to tour around The New School and if UNH comes up with full funding that could be my wild card ...

Re: [Raignn] Help! I have questions! [In reply to] Can't Post

[delurks]

At this time yesterday I'd been accepted to Mankato (central Minnesota) but didn't know about funding, and waitlisted at UBC in Vancouver. Well as of right now Mankato is offering my a TAship, so basically fully funded, and I've been accepted to UBC!

Logic tells me I should go to MN... no debt, less hassle (student visa, more forms, nearer to family). But then I think... how many of you have heard of Mankato? Now how many of you have heard of Vancouver? Where do you think would be nicer to live?

Everyone at both programs has been incredibly nice and helpful--I don't know what to do!!

Got a call at the office at the end of a long, hard day at work, from Deborah Landau at NYU. I'm in in fiction, with funding, to boot. Even better than I daydreamed.

Congrats! See, you were right!

I wonder why NYU seems to do it backwards - rejections first, then waitlist, then acceptances....strange.

Re: [purpleshrub] Help! I have questions! [In reply to] Can't Post

Heather, I've heard of Mankato, but probably only because my housemate went there for fiction (and her boyfriend for poetry) - PM me if you want me to put you in touch with either of them. Though I'm not at all familiar with the Vancouver prgram, I would say Vancouver is probably a more lively, interesting place to live, but it all depends on what you're looking for in a city. Mankato's not too far from Minneapolis, if you think you'd need a city vibe every now and then...

Congrats!

ooh exciting! congrats!

did you contact them first? I ask that only because I sent an email to them the other day seeking information about the status of my application and they replied asking for a time/number to reach me. I'm going to try really hard not to get my hopes up too much!

are you thinking about going there?

Re: [reality writes] UNCG [In reply to] Can't Post

They contacted me first; Jim Clark called me yesterday. If they come up with some funding for me there's a really good chance that's where I'll go. Just really like the feel of that place and the people there. I've got some higher ranked offers, but none of them feel quite right to me. UNCG definitely does. Clark says there's basically one tuition waiver left to give out there, so who knows who it will go to.

Correction/clarification: Actually there are 3 OUT-OF-STATE tuition waivers available, but 2 have been offered already. If you're in-state, I think there are more available.

I'm in at Arizona for fiction with a teaching assistantship as well. Also not sure about teaching - I want to but am worried about time. Did they already give out their big fellowships?

Re: [nicolec24] U. Arizona [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey nicolec24,

Congrats on your acceptance to U. Arizona for fiction. From what I gather -- and I'm basing this on the info they have on their website and the emails I've exchanged with Aurelie Sheehan, the director -- they don't have fellowships that provide full funding. It's the GATships that provide full funding. That's just what it seems like to me.

I, too, have misgivings about teaching for two years, especially since I have zero teaching experience and, I'll admit, not a great amount of interest in it. Not sure what I'm gonna do yet. Hope you're faring better than me!

good luck,

Drakmar

I say go where the funding is, regardless of this "prestige" thing people think they have an idea of. Prestige means nothing if the program, frankly, sucks...an MFA program is only as good as you make it.

With that said, go to Bowling Green...I'm not biased, I swear...
