Why would it surprise you that someone who got into one top program got into a slew of others as well? I'm sorry, I find the recent talk on this board about this whole process being little more than a crapshoot kind of ridiculous. Some people simply have stronger applications (read: writing samples) than others. This sort of thing is subjective only up to a point.

Sure, but it's also like, why can't it be me?

I know it can be easy to get a bit green-eyed when someone gets into almost all the top programs, but it appears you got into many good programs as well! There are many people who applied who did not receive any acceptances this year or are keeping their fingers crossed for waitlists to pan out. Be happy you are one of the very talented and lucky ones that not only has an acceptance, but choices as well!

Re: [whataneatgirl] Colorado State [In reply to] Can't Post

I have to agree. I teach extension courses, so I have students preparing for the MFA in my courses each quarter, and I wrote recs for seven students this year. Two of my students got in almost everywhere they applied, and I wasn't surprised. Their work is polished, complex, and readable. One is going to Iowa, and the other is torn between the Michener and Irvine.

My other students have talent, but their work at present is less fully formed. This is not a condemnation. The first time I applied for MFA programs, I was rejected by my undergrad alma mater (The New School), which stunned and bruised me (and yes, I was fool enough to apply to only one program). The director told me that I lacked seasoning, not talent, and I came to see his point in retrospect. I shelved the MFA idea for about five years, writing on my own and in workshops, and had a much better result the second time around. The writing apprenticeship is a long one, and some applicants will be further down that road. Doesn't mean you can't get there, too, with equal time and effort.

Re: [pensive] I'M IN! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been following this board religiously for the last two weeks. I have practically worn out my refresh button. Anyway, I'm only considering Low Residency programs so this may not be of interest but I just got a call from University of Alaska at Anchorage - I'm in (Fiction). My tally so far:

UAA - In
UNO - In
Spalding - In
Murray State - Out

And I'm still waiting on:

Bennington (fingers crossed)
Warren Wilson (holding my breath)
Lesley
USM Stonecoast
Queens
Pacific University
Fairleigh Dickinson (doesn't review until April 1st)

Congrats to everyone with good news and hang in there to those who are still holding out!

Haha, ok :)

Sorry if I sounded terse. I was told by my husband, mother, and sister that I was a bit "prickly" today. :) I blame it on a gray day, bad weather, and more waiting!

Scrat1,

I called Hollins to ask about fiction and was told that I was on a waiting list. I haven't heard anyone say they're in for fiction on any of the blogs, but I could have missed it. You might want to call.

I was accepted by Colorado State last night by postal mail. I am 99.9% sure I'm off to University of Oregon in the fall, so that should open up spots at Colorado and Texas State.

Best of luck to everyone! I hope everyone ends up where they want to be.

american university [In reply to] Can't Post

Just found out I'm accepted to American University for fiction (via email, but only because I emailed them asking about my status; they said my letter would be sent out tomorrow). I'm so happy--because this is my first real acceptance! (I am currently on the waitlist for Alabama, Bowling Green, and Old Dominion, and was rejected by Texas and UMass). They said they wouldn't be making financial aid decisions until the beginning of April, but that's okay because I have to wait anyway to see how things pan out at those other schools. I'm just so happy some school liked me enough to actually accept me!

Good luck to everyone else--and you know, there's always hope--American was the last school I was waiting to hear from and I was thinking it might be another waitlist or a rejection, but it turned out much better than I thought!

montana poetry [In reply to] Can't Post

Just called Montana - I'm in for poetry! Spoke with Karen Sturm, who was very friendly and didn't at all seem to mind looking up my decision (I had seen that other people here had called, and I couldn't stand waiting anymore). She said that my letter had "just gone to the Graduate Office" so I probably wouldn't get it til the end of March - so if anyone else is waiting impatiently, you might want to call!

She also said I was "in the middle of the pack" for funding, but that some spots would probably open up, and they wouldn't know until April if I would get one of them.

So right now it's between Montana and Minnesota (though still waiting on UHouston (ha!) and NYU), but if funding at Montana doesn't come through, Minnesota's probably going to win out.

As usual, good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!

Thanks. I actually emailed the literature dept. ( lit <at> american.edu ) because I didn't want to bug any of the individual faculty. The woman who wrote me back, I guess she's the secretary for the dpt or something, her name is Jenny Napolitano, was very nice.

Good luck!
