Has anyone heard, any genre, from U. Mississippi, yet?
Just came in, was going on the different schools statements not to expect notifications until March.

Katevey--Last year Ole Miss didn't send me a rejection letter until JULY. By then I'd made plans to attend another program and had completely forgotten that I hadn't heard from Ole Miss yet.

Hey, do they send acceptances in batches? I heard Iowa fiction acceptances were out but my application status says decision in progress! :( I am utterly confused.

The rumor is that Iowa isn't finished notifying acceptances yet. However, the website means nothing and won't be updated for your decision. Don't worry about the website. Nobody's has changed.

Someone called Iowa (I guess on friday?) and was told that not all acceptances are out yet. I'm inclined to believe this based on trends in the archives here and on the MFA blog. Monday will no doubt shed light on the matter.

University of Maryland: Poetry 2010 [In reply to] Can't Post

Accepted at the University of Maryland for poetry on February 21, 2010 via e-mail.

In it, Michael Collier said that the reading committee is a little behind because of a snow storm that closed campus for a week, but that they will be having a meeting this week to nail down the rest of the acceptances.

Decision Deadlines [In reply to] Can't Post

I have to say, I'm a little worried about this two-week decision deadline from UNCW. (I have to tell them yay or nay by march 5th, so that they have time to redistribute my funding package if I'm a no-go. My other acceptances have no such deadline, save one which is really pushing for a March 8th decision. Still, it looks like UNCW is my top choice as of now.)

I'm still waiting to hear back from U of Florida and Brown, and it looks like their decisions will come right *after* the UNCW deadline. Brown says they cannot give out any info before those final decisions are made (which will probably be in two weeks or so), and U of Florida's program assistant has yet to return my call or emails (though I hear they, too, will notify in two weeks or so). Folks are suggesting I just take the UNCW offer and blow them off if I nab a better spot, but I don't *want* to pull that stunt.

It's not out of line to assume Brown as a rejection, but Florida still feels like ... like, not totally impossible.

I'm scared, and it's hard to talk about with my fellow MFA applicants because it feels like "bragging"--oh me and my so-called "problem." It's a wonderful program to have, and I'm damned fortunate to be in this position, so why air any complaints? But I feel stuck and scared. I don't know what to do.

Its nice to have an offer. I have a reject from Wisconsin and I am still waiting for the rest nine places i applied to but it all seems to be bleak. If i had an offer i would not panic. Florida has got 400 applicants this year and Syracuse, another in my list has 500 for just 6 slots. This is a crazy year and from India, it is crazier. I wouldnt go through this dreadful process again. I am assuming a no from Iowa since they haven't informed anything yet.

Re: [rebarusset] Decision Deadlines [In reply to] Can't Post

I know how you feel with the fear (and anxiety.) I have been accepted to my three top choices (and I haven't yet heard from Brown, which complicates things even more) and they are all offering me good to great funding. I want to let them know as soon as I can, because these spots and offers are going to make someone else really happy. This wasn't a decision I anticipated having to make in the SLIGHTEST, and I feel really guilty "complaining" about how nervous I am right now because so many people would KILL to be in my spot. At least, it feels that way.

I think you should explain this situation to UNCW. There should be no reason they can't hold onto your funding for an extra week or so, right? Maybe I'm wrong. But I have found that if a program really wants you, they will fight for you. And UNCW has been nothing but warm and friendly in my few interactions with them. Good luck! I think we will all feel better once the final decisions have been made---then we can start celebrating!

UNCW is still listed as a member of the Council of Graduate Schools, which means that they are supposed to abide by the Resolution regarding Graduate Scholars. You can read a summary (or the whole thing if that's your bent) here: http://www.cgsnet.org/?tabid=201. The gist of it is that they've agreed to give you until April 15th.

Now, this thing is just a resolution, which means it has no teeth. You also may not want to start out your relationship with your program in an adversarial manner, but, to be honest, pushing for an earlier answer is borderline skeevy on their part. It's understandable that they would *want* to know, but (sing it, Mick) we can't always get what we want.

Hi, I'm new. [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey all.

I've been avoiding the boards in hopes of keeping my sanity but now that response time really has arrived, there is no point in delaying the inevitable any longer.

I applied in fiction to:
brooklyn college, hunter college, nyu, boston university, brown university, csulb, calarts, california college of the arts

So far, i've only heard back from cali college of the arts (CCA). Got a phone call from one of the profs this past Saturday offering a spot in fiction.

I'm not sure when someone has to respond with a decision by...? But I'll be relieved when the other responses (good or bad) come through the line. I have never so much wanted something to just end already. The waiting game is killer.

Well wishes to all of you!!

Ole Miss [In reply to] Can't Post

I just woke to an e-mail from Beth Ann Fennelly informing me that I'm accepted at OLE MISS (in poetry) with a fellowship! She said that she would have called if I weren't in Europe, so I will assume that any other acceptees based in America will be getting their notification via phone.

All the best to all my application comrades!

Re: [rebarusset] Decision Deadlines [In reply to] Can't Post

You too? UNCW is putting some pressure on me to decide regarding a TAship there, but I haven't even heard back from all schools, and Iowa doesn't have their funding info from the university yet, so I can't really decide until I have all my options. Not sure what to do about that. But you should know they cannot do that, as UNCW has signed an agreement not to require any student to decide until April. I wrote to U of Iowa regarding the UNCW pressure, and they told me this. It may be helpful in your case too:

"UNC is technically free to do whatever they want, even though they did in fact sign on to the agreement that says they won’t pressure students to make any choices before April 15. IF they pressure you to actually commit and sign a contract, that’s when if it were me, I’d send them a copy of the resolution (I’m attaching it here) and point out that UNC Wilmington has agreed to this, and that you’d prefer not to make a decision yet. I heard of several people getting early pressure from UNC Wilmington last year, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that happens.
Even if they offer you a contract, that doesn’t mean you have to accept it, and you should have the right to wait until 4/15 to make that decision."

I applied in Creative Nonfiction, and heard from U of Montana today with an acceptance per e-mail, also offering a TAship.
So, I have now heard from:
UC Riverside: Accepted
U of Iowa: Accepted (yay!)
Oregon State: Accepted
University of North Carolina Wilmington: Accepted
Ohio State: Waitlisted
U of Montana: Accepted

Waiting on:
Notre Dame
U of Georgia
Portland State
San Jose State

Besides that, very excited, because I really had been thinking I would be lucky to get in even one program. never imagined this outcome.
