Evening all,

A WUSTL fiction acceptance was reported on TSE. No, no, not me. :) :(

Just wanted to let everyone know that a Vanderbilt fiction acceptance was posted on TSE. Not mine though, there's no way I'm rising to the top of that ridiculously overloaded pile.

After being in waitlist purgatory last year, fortune is shining on me. I was accepted via phone call to The University of Alabama this morning (in creative nonfiction). I was also accepted via e-mail in creative nonfiction to the MFA program in creative writing & the media arts at the University of Missouri - Kansas City.

The University of Alabama [In reply to] Can't Post

I still can't believe it, but Robin Behn just called from the University of Alabama to offer me a spot in their program. I'M IN AT ALABAMA FOR POETRY!!! I can't believe it!

Honestly, I'd given up hope. So, for all of you who think you've lost your chance just because a program you've applied to has already called people in your genre -- forget about it! Don't give up hope until you get an official denial. People told me that I still might have a chance at Alabama, but I didn't believe them... I refused to be suckered into "false hope." But I was WRONG! I've never been happier, in my entire life, to admit -- to those people who told me to keep hoping -- to admit that they were right and I was wrong.

Applied in Creative Nonfiction...
Got in at University of Iowa! Also in at UC Riverside. Both left me voicemail messages and wanted to discuss funding package. Waitlisted at Ohio State per letter.

Have not yet heard from:

UNC Wilmington
U of Georgia
U of Montana
Portland State
Oregon State

I see on here that some people have heard back from UNCW. Does that mean I should be concerned I haven't heard back from them, and I will likely be rejected?

Cheers!

Hi Paligal,

Congratulations on Iowa and Riverside, and the waitlist at Ohio State! I don't think there have been any UNCW acceptances yet this year--the posts on these threads go back several years, so you may be looking at an acceptance from last year? A lot of acceptances are tracked at TSE 2010 Application Responses, and it's not showing any UNCW activity for any genres yet. Even if there has been an acceptance, don't assume a rejection until you've heard from the school. They don't always notify everyone at the same time.

Congrats on the acceptances, fellow CNF'er! I guess that means I need to start fretting over Iowa and that I can chalk up Ohio State as a rejection.

Those good and lucky folks here who've been accepted to U of Alabama Tuscaloosa, especially CNF: You MUST got this program. We're talking fantastic professors who'll pull out all the stops for you.

Congrats on all your CNF acceptances! I did my undergrad at Oregon State and studied with Ted Leeson, whose focus is in non-fiction, and I just want to say that he is an incredibly supportive and helpful writing mentor. I know that they started notifying acceptances for fiction last week, and I spoke to Ted this weekend and he's been sorting through the non-fiction manuscripts, so hopefully you'll hear from him soon! If you have questions about OSU, Corvallis, or just Oregon in general, I'm happy to answer them.

Thank you for this response; I appreciate seeing an enthusiastic post of approval of Alabama from a CNF standpoint. I am thrilled that I was accepted to Alabama and am very excited to attend the admitted students weekend in a few weeks.

Hi hansenma,

Thanks for the OSU info. Do you know what their funding is like? I kind of was gunning for living in Oregon, so applied to OSU and Portland State, but now that I got into Iowa, not sure I'll end up there unless they had some great funding package (and if I even get in!)

Cheers!

Re: [paligal] I'M IN! [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't say for sure, but it definitely involves assistantships of sorts. But OSU just got a big grant or something like that, which boosted general university funding, and scholarships are pretty easy to come by outside of the English department. Corvallis isn't a terribly spendy place to live, and is extremely bike friendly. Also, we don't have sales tax in Oregon!

McNeese State [In reply to] Can't Post

Just got off the phone with Neil Connelly at McNeese State. In for fiction!! McNeese is a lovely little program and I know I'd be a good fit, but I've still got ten more question marks floating around out there before I can give McNeese an answer.

This year was my second stab at the MFA after last year's crushing universal rejection. I'm feeling very blessed right now. A little shell shocked too, but blessed.

Congrats John Grady Cole! I applied there too and was wondering when you sent in your application. I sent mine later, so it would help to know if early applicants are being notified now and later applicants being notified later (????). Thanks, and congratulations again!

OK, not sure why this didn't post correctly, so here goes again. As on cue, Mr. Leeson just left a voicemail for me asking me to call him back. I am assuming they wouldn't call by phone for a rejection...Anyway, very curious about their funding. I'm delighted that I seem to be getting into these programs so far (3 in and 1 wait list out of 4 that have replied thus far), and I thought I'd be lucky getting into one! I'm of course leaning toward Iowa, but still need to hear what funding package they can offer me as opposed to the others.

Cheers,
Mieke

Hold on, KB, let me thumb though my email...

...

All righty. This year I emailed my app packet on 12/6. Last year when I applied to McNeese I was waitlisted, and I was notified of my waitlisting in early March. This is apropos of nothing, as McNeese had a record year for apps this year and I'm sure they're doing things a little differently, but keep your chin up, kiddo. This thing's still got a ways to go.
