Re: [lavventura] MCW Acceptances [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I'd say it takes a LOT of talent AND a lot of luck. I think you have the right to be totally proud of yourself right now, and it makes sense to feel incredibly lucky! Michener!

I have to tell you, found, I didn't think I would be as excited as I am about the Michener. Didn't think I'd ever live in TX...but now it's a strong possibility.

Is there anyone else out there that has received an email acceptance? Hang in there, you may get one if you have not been rejected yet!

Done! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm done for the season.

I just heard from my sixth (and final) school. I was probably on the waiting list but that wasn't brought up. I've been accepted from three schools and rejected from three schools. 50% is not too bad. I sort of expected 0% in light of the fact that:

1. I'm older
2. I've been out of school for over 10 years
3. I did not major in English Lit
4. I've never taken English Lit classes in college
5. I have a less-than-stellar GPA
6. I have not won any publication awards
7. I'm a nobody.

From the feedback I received from the MFA faculty member I talked to, the themes and subject matter in my writing samples did the trick. Also, my heartfelt "this is what happened to me, ya folla?" personal statement. The person I talked to didn't even remember what my GPA was.

Woo Hoo!!

I've been lurking. I'm done too.

My list:
Michigan (poetry) - rejected
Iowa (both fiction and poetry) - rejected
Brown (poetry) - rejected
Cornell (fiction) - rejected

NYU (poetry) accepted with average funding
Brooklyn College (fiction) accepted with average funding

No idea which way to go. Thoughts?

Hey there, congratulations!! I'm in at Brooklyn for Fiction too. You got funding? Can you say any more on that? Since you got into one for Poetry and one for Fiction, I think you should decide which genre you want and go from there.

Oh my goodness, I read page 103 and there were two good newses and now I'm on 104 and there are so many!

Checkov congratulations on BGSU!

Anna VP -- What a decision to make -- I'll agree with the other submitter who said it looks like you need to choose your genre and that will dictate your school unless Brooklyn College allows you to take poetry workshops as well and you like the poetry faculty there as much as at NYU then I'd go with Brooklyn college -- the funding is automatically better because its less expensive and you're in an equally great program (my belief, I don't care what the rankings say). Congrats on Two great acceptances in one day.

Unsaid -- You knew you were going to get into Va. Tech -- I knew you'd get into Va.Tech. The acceptance was a formality but Congrats anyway. Decisions. Decisions.

Molly, Congratulations (again?) on Brooklyn College! I hope you love it!

Raysen -- good for you!

Re: [Khalilah] Acceptances [In reply to] Can't Post

Speaking of chekhov, did you guys see last Sunday's episode of "The Amazing Race"? One of the challenges required the contestants to find letters while riding a roller coaster and then unscramble them to spell out the name of a famous Russian playwright. The correct answer was "Chekhov." Of course, he's also noted for his innovations with the short story form.

Nearly all of the contestants had to guess and after the answer was confirmed, they still had no idea. Only one group -- the Asian Harvard law grads, go figure -- knew the answer and deliberately spelled it out correctly. The guy said, "I mean, who's never heard of Chekhov?"

Hilarious!

Although sometimes, I'd look up faculty names on MFA programs and go, who the heck is that guy? Yikes!

Seriously, I think I'm quite literate in all things pre-1990s and almost illiterate (or ignorant) on post-1990s literature. Hence, my inability to "get" Amy Hempel and Deborah Eisenberg.

Tony Hoagland just called. In at Houston for poetry (M.F.A.). He said the program director will call officially in a few days and give more information, particularly about funding, but that I will have a T.A. ship and some sort or aid. o
