Thanks so much reality writes! Btw... I forgot to add, all you Montana people, Prageeta mentioned there will be some snail mail acceptances going out (particularly for fiction). So don't lose hope if you don't get the call!

Sara, Who doesn't love the Hollins program! Congrats on that! And of course who can afford it?! Anyway, good luck in making these hard decisions.

Thanks so much Khalilah! I haven't posted much for fear of posting before accepting would somehow offset my karmic chances of getting into grad school (I know, but I am so superstitious), but I have been reading your posts and congratulations to you too! (Btw... I love your uncle's expression)

In at Arizona. Just got the call from Aurelie Sheehan. Love the program, but I turned down the offer since I'm likely headed to Iowa. So chalk up one more open spot. She said the funding situation was a little up in the air on account of the local economy.

Maryland [In reply to] Can't Post

In for poetry at Maryland - snail mail this afternoon - same letter others posted last Fri & Sat. I assumed I wouldn't be getting one, but apparently it takes longer for a letter to go from Maryland to Los Angeles then to Wisconsin. (It was postmarked 3/5). Funding info to come later this month, as the other letters all said.

Thanks for the congrats!
He called me at noon today. I'm obviously stoked, especially as I've received four rejections prior to this acceptance. Good luck to all the rest of you who applied to Notre Dame!

washington - seattle [In reply to] Can't Post

in at university of washington - seattle, fiction, via e-mail late last night! waitlisted for a TAship.
i honestly don't know much about the program outside of what's on the website, so i need to do some research, but seattle would be an amazing place to spend a couple of years. keeping my fingers crossed on funding.

You can't really beat the view from the campus -- Mt. Rainier. Simply spectacular!

I hear it's a very literature-heavy program; that is, a lot of theory and less focus on the MFA studio part. I could be wrong, but that's what I heard.

You better love the rain.

Re: [ummmliz] washington - seattle [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey, ummmliz-
Not really lit-heavy, no. It's actually possible to avoid taking formal lit classes completely. Or it least it was when I went there (2006-2008). The department offered courses that were sort of "form and theory" classes taught by creative writing faculty. Those could be used to satisfy the lit credits while still maintaining a creative writing focus.
If you'd like some specific info about the program, just PM me.
Congrats!

In Reply To
Once you have your MFA, the teaching opportunities will come no matter what.

I'm not trying to be a bummer or anything, and I know this has been said many, many times, but I just want to reiterate that an MFA will absolutely not guarantee teaching opportunities. Not even an MFA from Brown or Cornell. MFA + a solid, impressive publishing record will put one in the running, though.

Granted, if you get some experience TAing first-year composition, that experience, with an MFA, will qualify you for teaching comp as an adjunct instructor somewhere, but if we're talking about tenure-track creative writing positions, that's a different deal.

Re: [cantonioni] Acceptances [In reply to] Can't Post

Cantonioni I think you've said it better -- what I was speaking on was there's no reason to pay 50K extra to get an opportunity to teach through Columbia because once you get the MFA, the teaching opportunities will or won't come irrespective of the source of your MFA -- it is more about your publishing record.

Hi, everyone. Congrats to those with fabulous acceptances!

I'm in at Bowling Green, fiction. Anyone else? Would love to chat with any other folks who've been accepted, but can't seem to find anyone online.

Cheers! And good luck!
