Re: [Khalilah] Acceptances [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh no! Distracted! I still have to hear from UC Irvine and Houston. I'm not holding out much hope for Irvine, but I love Toni Nelson at Houston, and the fact it's a 3 year program, so my fingers are crossed....

But even if I don't get good news from either of those, what a decision! East Coast, West Coast! I got into UC Davis, too...but that's an MA. But I love Pam Houston. And funding there is looking nice...Brooklyn doesn't seem to have a lot (at least not for me, I don't know about others.) But Amy Hempel and Michael Cunningham! Back and forth! Brooklyn! California! I've been sort of a Midwestern country girl my whole life...Ann Arbor is the biggest city I've ever lived in!

Shelly and Sarah -- are you definitely going to Brooklyn? Anyone shed any insight on this? It's a good problem to have -- deciding between two great schools!

Good luck, everyone! And thanks for the congrats!

Swiviol -- any word from your other schools, yet?

Hi Megmarcu - Well, I was rejected at Michigan, Iowa, and Brown - still waiting on BU and American with fingers crossed. :)

Good luck making your decision between East and West Coast!

Not in, but waitlisted at Indiana for poetry. It appears they're sending wait list emails out this afternoon?

sara e.g.,

i know this is the wrong thread for this, but have you workshopped in Boston anywhere other than BCAE or CCAE?

I tried to sign up for a few workshops this past summer at BCAE, but they kept being canceled due to low enrollment.

PJ--

No, the CCAE is the only place in Boston I've ever workshopped. I've only known them to cancel a few classes, and luckily none of the ones I've signed up for. Go for it!

Re: [megmarcu] Acceptances [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Meg,

I'm 95% sure I'm going to Brooklyn. I was talking to my roommate about it yesterday and I described it like I'm in love with Brooklyn, but in lust with Columbia. So I'm turning down the seductress attempting to shatter my marriage to Brooklyn. That said, I am going to schedule a visit, and talk to students and learn more about each program but Brooklyn's program just makes me happy. It seems more hands-on then Columbia, better fit with my day-job, don't have to drown in debt. It seems like at Brooklyn I'd be doing more writing and at Columbia I'd be doing more examining and philosophizing (which, is just what I glean from the coursework on the website, I really do have to visit each program). Since I'm in New York already, 10,000 dollars for an MFA in Creative Writing with a chance to work under Michael Cunningham and Amy Hempel, doesn't seem bad at all! I'm worried about the sway Columbia might have over Brooklyn in terms of teaching at a college-level, and that's about the only reservation I have about going to Brooklyn. Anyone think Columbia's pull dwarfs Brooklyn's? And would that pull be worth 60,000 dollars -I got a meager fellowship and a program that didn't excite me as much?

Sarah

Re: [mollygolightly] Acceptances [In reply to] Can't Post

Molly,

As a New Yorker, you already know that a lot of what you are going to get from Columbia, you can get from aggressive networking and public readings on your own -- the publishing contacts, exposure to a different set of great writers (actually you can get exposure to great writers that don't teach in your particular program all the time in New York) etc. As far as teaching on the college level, Columbia doesn't guarantee that for all of its MFAers and it seriously detracts from your time to write. Not to mention that to get those teaching spots you have to compete with the English and Humanities PhD students who are required to teach for their funding. Does Brooklyn College not have unpromised opportunities for being a T.A.? I thought they did. Once you have your MFA, the teaching opportunities will come no matter what.

Save $50 K and possibly more -- Brooklyn College may even give you a nice scholarship your second semester or thereafter.

Accepted to Hollins for poetry today by email. Very excited, but I'll have to turn it down as their funding isn't as great as other programs I'm considering. I love this program though. Good luck to others!

Notre Dame [In reply to] Can't Post

Got a call from Steve Tomasula today. In for prose at Notre Dame. There were about 200 applicants for 5 spots this year, he said. Since it's their spring break, grad school should be sending out official acceptances next week.

Re: Montana [In reply to] Can't Post

Prageeta Sharma from Montana just called. I am in for poetry! No T.A. ship. I asked and she said there were 4 people in front of me so if you get called, you can ask. She also said she will be calling all the poetry applicants today and tomorrow who haven't already been notified. Fiction applicants should have already heard or will hear by tomorrow. She said nothing of nonfiction. Packets are supposed to arrive around April 15th. Hope that helps.
