Hey Meg, I'm 95% sure I'm going to Brooklyn. I was talking to my roommate about it yesterday and I described it like I'm in love with Brooklyn, but in lust with Columbia. So I'm turning down the seductress attempting to shatter my marriage to Brooklyn. That said, I am going to schedule a visit, and talk to students and learn more about each program but Brooklyn's program just makes me happy. It seems more hands-on then Columbia, better fit with my day-job, don't have to drown in debt. It seems like at Brooklyn I'd be doing more writing and at Columbia I'd be doing more examining and philosophizing (which, is just what I glean from the coursework on the website, I really do have to visit each program). Since I'm in New York already, 10,000 dollars for an MFA in Creative Writing with a chance to work under Michael Cunningham and Amy Hempel, doesn't seem bad at all! I'm worried about the sway Columbia might have over Brooklyn in terms of teaching at a college-level, and that's about the only reservation I have about going to Brooklyn. Anyone think Columbia's pull dwarfs Brooklyn's? And would that pull be worth 60,000 dollars -I got a meager fellowship and a program that didn't excite me as much? Sarah Oh no! Distracted! I still have to hear from UC Irvine and Houston. I'm not holding out much hope for Irvine, but I love Toni Nelson at Houston, and the fact it's a 3 year program, so my fingers are crossed.... But even if I don't get good news from either of those, what a decision! East Coast, West Coast! I got into UC Davis, too...but that's an MA. But I love Pam Houston. And funding there is looking nice...Brooklyn doesn't seem to have a lot (at least not for me, I don't know about others.) But Amy Hempel and Michael Cunningham! Back and forth! Brooklyn! California! I've been sort of a Midwestern country girl my whole life...Ann Arbor is the biggest city I've ever lived in! Shelly and Sarah -- are you definitely going to Brooklyn? Anyone shed any insight on this? It's a good problem to have -- deciding between two great schools! Good luck, everyone! And thanks for the congrats! Swiviol -- any word from your other schools, yet?
