I've decided to go to SIUC. The funding package is better than the offers I received from my two other acceptances, Minnesota State Mankato and Memphis.

I'm really excited!

Congratulations. Pinckney Benedict is a great workshop leader.

The Final Countdown [In reply to] Can't Post

Congrats on Alabama, symmetrical! I live in Birmingham, AL, and I know that Tuscaloosa has a great little writing community going on. As long as you can handle the heat and humidity and a few tornadoes, you'll love it!

The Final Countdown:

Accepted:
Vanderbilt
U Arizona
FSU

Waitlisted:
Hollins
Illinois
'Bama

Rejected:
I'm not gonna go there.

FINAL DECISION: VANDERBILT! MUSIC CITY, HERE I COME!!!

Congratulations to all of you with acceptances!

This may not be the right place to post, but how many people are accepting offers with no funding? How dangerous is it to go into debt for an MFA? Or if you've accepted without funding, how did you justify it? Thanks!

Re: [kedsleded] The Final Countdown [In reply to] Can't Post

I think this is a great place to post this question. I would suggest you look in the Columbia forum and some of the other New York schools forums. These people, in general are accepting no-funding offers. Also, search in the threads for the names of New York schools or do a search for "funding". The "funding" search will bring up a looooot of posts and some of them should be people talking about getting little or no funding even for non-New York schools. Good luck!

Re: [kedsleded] The Final Countdown [In reply to] Can't Post

I grappled with this question myself -- Debt and the MFA (it should be its own thread, haha.) I ultimately decided against debt, as I'm very young (still in undergrad, with some loans coming due from there...although not until after grad school I suppose) and these Creative Writing degrees have so few returns, at least immediately. The publishing industry is fickle in this economy, teaching jobs are more and more scarce. However, if it's the DREAM school, it might be worth it -- my NY school, however, just wasn't my dream school. So I chose the funded route. Best of luck!

I've decided. I'm going to UC-Davis in the fall. I turned down Brooklyn's offer today, so if anyone's on the waitlist, I hope you get good news.

It's been wonderful being with you this season, everyone. Since Davis is an MA....I might just be back in a few years, trying those MFA's again.

Re: [megmarcu] The Final Countdown [In reply to] Can't Post

This is a good point -- is it worth it to accept an offer without funding? I decided to accept a non-funded position at a school (over a fully funded position at another school) because of a few things -- faculty, location, class offerings, and the community. You'll be living in a city for a few years, living, working, and writing. It's important to be in a place where you feel as if you'll be happy and productive, right? I say if it's reasonable, let's say the price of a new Honda Accord, then a little debt is not the end of the world. It comes down to your gut. What's right for me won't be right for you.

Of course, three years from now, I may entirely regret this decision, but let's hope not.

Heard from UNCW today by e-mail, got in for fiction (no funding). The message said they got over 300 apps for 24 spots, so I was happy to have been considered at all. Here's my final count:

Accepted at:
LSU
UNCW
Southern Miss
George Mason

Going to:
LSU

So yeah, if you're on the waitlist at one of those other schools, a spot just opened up. I'm headed to Baton Rouge in the fall!

Good luck to everyone in making your decisions.

Thanks. Great feeling to have the process over with and the next three years lined up. Bunch of time to just write. Sounds good to me.

Well, April 15 has come and gone, which means this forum will more or less go into hibernation for awhile. Best of luck to everyone, wherever you might be headed.

Re: [bennyprof] The Final Countdown [In reply to] Can't Post

Everything's gotten pretty quite over here, but I've been waiting on funding news before posting my final decision. (And after two years of trying, I'm thrilled to have a final decision to report!) I am heading to UNCG this fall for poetry and I truly couldn't be happier. It feels like exactly the place for me and everyone has been so amazingly kind and generous with their time.

Very best of luck for those doing this next year. I didn't get any good news at all until around the end of March-- I was pretty resigned to trying again. But good things happen, even in April. Anyway, my bit of advice before I say good bye: There's nothing shameful about being knocked down, as long as you brush yourself off, and find something you can learn from about it. That's what, in my opinion, being a writer is all about. :)

Thanks everyone for all the advice and support! It's been great sharing this experience with you all!
