Ahh, sorry for the confusion. Alabama was my first time applying (two years ago). As for now, I told LSU to take me off the list.

Thanks moomoo, and big congrats on Illinois! It sounds like an awesome program. It IS a big relief to be done, and the moving craziness does seem like a lot, but it's a good kind of crazy, for a change.

Done! [In reply to] Can't Post

Last night, I accepted my poetry spot at Virginia Tech. I visited a couple months ago and everything felt right, the town, the people, the program! I even got the little butterflies in my stomach. I am really just thrilled to be attending.

This was my final tally:
Acceptances:
Southern Illinois Carbondale (with Fellowship), Alabama (with Fellowship), Virginia Commonwealth

Waitlists:
Indiana, Michigan, Louisiana State, Purdue

Rejections:
Iowa, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Washington St. Louis, Vanderbilt

No word:
Penn State, University of Virginia, New Orleans

Good Luck to everyone!

Re: [found] Has Anybody Made a Final Decision? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all,

If anyone has received admissions data from any school they've been rejected from or admitted to, I'd love to hear it (either via PM or right on the board). As most of you know, I'm compiling data on applicant pool sizes, acceptance rates, and matriculating cohort sizes on my blog, here:

http://sethabramson.blogspot.com/...ng-mfa-rankings.html

Any help is appreciated--by me, of course, but far more importantly by future MFA applicants, who are counting on all of us to help make the process more transparent going forward.

Congrats to everyone here on their acceptances! Anyone considering Wisconsin-Madison for poetry this year should e-mail me at sethabramson[@]yahoo.com; I'll be attending the Ph.D. in English there and workshopping with the MFA program starting this fall, and would love to discuss Madison for those still weighing their options!

Thanks in advance!

Seth

Alabama it is [In reply to] Can't Post

Here is my tally for this application season:

Accepted:

Alabama (full funding)
Hollins (in off wait list, partial funding)

Rejected (Good god, look at them all!):

Brown
UC Irvine
Johns Hopkins
UNC Greensboro
Notre Dame
Oregon
Syracuse
UT Austin
Utah
Wash U-St. Louis
Virginia

Everything happens for a reason, I think. I'm sure I'll benefit greatly from three or four years instead of two, and hopefully that extra year (or two) won't take too big a toll on my relationship.

Thank you all for your commiseration, support, etc. etc. This has been a great community and I'm sad to leave (though I'm also very happy to end a rather unhealthy obsession. ;)) I wish you all the best. I'm sure I'll check back in once in awhile, but for now, I'm going to take a very long break and try to fill in the gap with healthier activities.

Yup. I notified everyone: acceptances, waitlists, and those who were quiet. This should mean something good for some great poets out there! Best of luck!

Re: [germericanqt] Alabama it is [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey germericanqt,

I grew up in T-town and the MFA program was always the coolest thing going. (for the .01% of the population not obsessed with football). I went to Montana, and loved that it was an older program with a long history. There's something intangible but awesome about that depth and Bama has the same thing. When I was Freshmen at UA (in 1986! Yikes!) I had a poster of Tallulah Bankhead in my dormroom at Tutwiler.

Everyone I know who went to Bama has really loved the program. I firmly believe you will dig it.

Decided: Syracuse! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all,

Frequent reader, infrequent poster.

I'll be attending Syracuse in the fall for poetry. Very excited. I've removed myself from wait / active app lists at Notre Dame and Purdue (poetry), so hopefully that'll help someone else out.

Best to all as you make final choices in the coming two weeks. It feels so good to be done!

George Mason [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all. The roller coaster ride is over for me. I'm bound for George Mason to study fiction this fall.

UVA [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm headed to UVA for poetry. There should be a poetry spot opening up at Indiana.

This is my final, final answer for sure. I've only yet to hear from Arizona State but I won't be swayed again lol.

Wow, crazy. The allure of UVA is such a difficult one to resist -- I hope the folks at Indiana weren't too upset at the news. Regardless though, you've got to do what's best for yourself; I'm sure you made the right decision.

Re: [moomoocow42] UVA [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks corkeyb...good luck to you as things wind down!

Yeah moocow, it is crazy, I know. lol I really was set and happy about IU. It came down to a connection with the poetry faculty, the fact that a 2 year program will lead to less debt for me (regardless of full funding I have a 31 year old's bills and responsibilities and I'll only be bringing in 1/4 of what I used to make), and I'll really be able to focus on my writing in that 1st year with no teaching responsibilities at UVA.

For future applicants, I don't recommend accepting an offer before you hear from all schools lol. IU had mentioned when they were wanting me to respond to their offer that they had people on the waitlist that would accept on the spot so I know they don't have a shortage of people to fill that spot. I should have had more faith in myself regarding UVA but there was no way to know and I didn't want to keep IU waiting. Plus, I'd ranked UVA lower than IU on my personal ranking based on my incorrect knowledge of UVA's funding. So I originally thought that even if UVA accepted me, I would choose IU over them.

I misread UVAs website where it says the first year fellowship is $16,000. I thought that money was used to cover tuition and then the stipend would be what was left over, which was like $1500. Yeah, I was wrong, $16,000 is what is left over, it's what you get...without teaching responsibilities the first year. I know I've seen other people confused about that too. So when I got clear info on this, I opened my mind to UVA.

Once I had the proper information, my gut spoke up loud and clear. I didn't have the fear about UVA that I expressed having about IU earlier in this thread. IU would have still been an awesome experience, just less awesome than UVA.

I'm explaining myself because I really do feel like a jerk for declining after accepting lol. I really was certain about where I was going. Thankfully, nothing is binding until April 15 and thankfully, there's a poet who will get the call from IU who will be just as happy as I was to get the call from UVA. Sorry for the long post.

Congratulations, unsaid! I went to UVa undergrad. and had a wonderful experience with the Creative Writing Program there. Rita, in particular, was a keen reader and generous teacher. I also love and miss Charlottesville. I'm sure you're in for a great couple of years!

SIUC [In reply to] Can't Post

I've decided to go to SIUC. The funding package is better than the offers I received from my two other acceptances, Minnesota State Mankato and Memphis.

I'm really excited!

I haven't heard back from UNCG and Bowling Green State, but I feel confidant in my choice.
