Re: [EmilyMay] Decision [In reply to] Can't Post

Decided on Iowa a while back. Accepted to and declining offers from Greensboro, Arizona, UNH, George Mason, and Memphis. Waitlisted at LSU. Rejected at Texas, Minnesota, Montana, and Cornell.

Also regarding declining etiquette: a couple schools have asked where I was going, and I told them. They were all supportive and encouraging. So, you know, don't hesitate to tell schools. I get the sense there's very little animosity, and that these programs want their accepted applicants to get a good deal regardless of where they decide to go.

Fiction, btw

I'll second that. The schools I declined have been nothing but supportive; I really do think they want you to end up where you're going to be happiest.

I formally accepted Illinois this weekend, for poetry. Couldn't be happier about it.

This feels like a craigslist post. In Fiction: will anyone be turning down a spot at Oregon State, SIUC, or, pretty please, Notre Dame? If so, I will give you a million dollars.*

I was about to post my final decision on this forum this morning but at approx. 10:40 AM, there was an earthquake in the SF-SJ Bay Area. A small minor one followed by a slightly bigger one. I'm so shaken, I can't name a single program I applied to this past season.

Don't worry about me, folks. Go save yourself.

(Seriously, there was a moderate earthquake here.)

Finally, I've heard from everywhere. Here's the tally:

Accepted:
UC Davis
Brooklyn College

Rejected:
Iowa
Michigan
UC Irvine
Houston
Johns Hopkins

NOW I CAN'T DECIDE.

I sort of really want to go to the MA at Davis so I could wait, oh, several years and apply to Iowa and Michigan again -- I really want to move back to Ann Arbor and I haven't even left yet. That was the advice from one professor, who said she wishes she'd extended her stay in grad school, to have more time to write (if the funding's good, which it is, at Davis.) But I worry about turning down a good MFA program...will I be spurned by the entire community, never admitted anywhere again??? I'm also very young -- still in undergrad right now.

Any thoughts? Anything? Hello?

AND FINE, RAYSEN, BE THAT WAY.

(joking, joking...)

Go with your gut. That's about as best you can do. Life is full of woulda-coulda-shoulda done this, but you can't do everything. If you go to Davis I doubt that everyone at Brooklyn is going to blacklist you and prevent you from doing things later on (I can just imagine the faculty there sending out emails to everyone they know, telling the creative writing faculties of the world to watch out for Meg). When you apply for positions/gradschools in the future there is no section in which you must describe schools to which you were accepted but didn't go to. There's no way for them to know.

Good luck with your decision.

I had turned down Alabama last time I applied, which many consider a top notch program (fiction).

This year, I still got in. My friends were pissed at me turning down a place 2 years ago, but fully support me this year anyway.

Also, 99.9% sure that I'm accepting NMSU (fiction, full funding). I loved them, just wanted to go over logistics with my peeps before I make it final. Then, I can figure out how the heck I'm gonna move across country when I don't drive (yet).

Re: [megmarcu] Has Anybody Made a Final Decision? [In reply to] Can't Post

Megmarcu,

Hmmm. These choices are stressful, no?

Everyone is different, but as someone older, I can tell you what I would tell my 20 something self to do.

The MA at Davis sounds great. It's funded, you have a chance to live and explore a different area of the country. Grad programs have the benefit of an "instant friend" world, which is completely different from moving somewhere cold. You can take workshops and write. Also, while the MA isn't a gateway to tenure track (and what is?!) it still qualifies you for teaching positions, grant writing jobs, etc. A BA seems to be worth about spit these days.

After the MA, take time off from school. At least 2-3 years. You simply need to live out of the school bubble for a while. For one, you need to appreciate how awesome school is compared to actually working. Then apply for your MFA. Don't worry about some "blacklist." Bottom line is schools want good writers and these writing professors...they are wonderful but not exactly the most organized people, and most of them drink heavily. I'd be shocked if they remembered.

As for Michigan, the problem is once you graduate and friends leave, it won't the same place anymore. Sometimes the ground shifts beneath your feet, so it's better to move before that. If after moving around you decide your heart belongs there, guess what? Barring major Michigan earthquake, it will still be there.

Tabby,

Thanks so much for the advice and encouragement! I really am leaning toward the route you suggest. I think ultimately, I might benefit from it...as a teacher of mine said, "There's no set path to becoming a writer." So, while I know I want that MFA some day, it might not be now.

Thanks!!!

Best,
Megan

Hey Megan,

I just PMed you about Brooklyn but I just want to say that I agree with what Tabby says. I'm 31 and it took me this long out in the working world to realize that I want to go back to school. You totally won't be black-listed if you don't go to Brooklyn. Do the thing you'd most regret not doing (at least what you think you'd most regret not doing). That's how I decided on Columbia. Also, time out in the world experiencing more stuff outside of the world of academia might improve the breadth of your writing. Don't let my talking-up Brooklyn (to everyone deciding about Brooklyn: it really seems like a great program!) influence you unduly. It sounds to me like Tabby's route is the route you're most excited about. Remember, you can't make a wrong decision here.

Molly

True! Mistakes are heroin addiction, nuclear detonations, etc. Not grad school.

Hi everyone!

This is my first time posting. Because it might be helpful to somebody out there on a wait list, I'll share:

Today I accepted Syracuse's offer. A spot (and fellowships) just opened up today at Indiana U., Alabama, and SIUC. I declined UNCW awhile ago, because even with a TAship, it wasn't full funding. I'll notify LSU to take me off of their wait list tomorrow.

Good luck!

I declined my spot at Hollins today, for all you fiction people on the wait list. The top funding spots have already been claimed. I wish I could justify that 17K/year, because Roanoke sounds lovely, but I can't. Good luck everyone!

I also accepted Syracuse's offer yesterday, thus freeing up spots in poetry at Alabama, VCU, and Arkansas, and on the waitlists at Florida and Indiana. Hope that makes someone happy.

Congrats to everyone and their recent decisions. I've just accepted the University of Illinois' offer for fiction, and have turned down spots at Western Michigan and Roosevelt already. I've also removed my name from Notre Dame's waitlist as well as from Purdue's weird quasi-waitlist thingy. Hopefully this'll open up stuff for other people. Good luck!

Congrats moomoocow42! It's a great program.

I'm currently holding on to an offer from Illinois (fiction), so I guess that makes me a potential future classmate. Would you mind PM'ing me your thoughts. I'd be curious to know what swayed you in that direction.

Congratulations to all who've made their decisions! These boards and the people who post here have been really helpful during this long, crazy process. So thanks, I wish you all the very best and I hope that everyone ends up in a program they love.

I've accepted my offer at U Minnesota (fiction). I'm really excited, and I kind of can't believe this is real...I feel really lucky and really grateful. I applied to 9 schools, and I ended up with 6 rejections, 1 confirmed waitlist (bottom of the list, advised I had no shot at getting in), 1 assumed waitlist (based on my online status remaining in limbo after first round notifications), and one acceptance.

Congratulations and good luck again, everyone.

Thanks so much, unsaid, the same goes to you! Congrats on all your stellar acceptances, and I hope you have a wonderful time in Indiana...it looks like there will be some really great people in that incoming class (Khalilah, I'm talking to you too here!) And I just think it's so cool that you got a call from Rita Dove, I read her "Geometry" poem somewhere once a couple of years ago and for some reason that first line is still stuck in my head.
