Re: [Khalilah] Indiana Combined MFA-fiction /MA in AAADS [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm headed to Indiana too! I just accepted the offer! I'm an idiot for not just accepting their offer immediately since they were basically tied for first with Cornell and I didn't get into Cornell. But I waited and stressed myself out a little bit over nothing LOL. And I was lured by my interview with Virginia Tech...they seemed like they would have all been outstanding mentors for me and my work.

So yeah, I'm going to Indiana for Fall 2009! Dual degree program- MA African American/African Diaspora Studies/MFA Creative Writing Poetry.

Declined today: Virginia Tech, Boise State (waitlist)
Declined a few weeks ago: Alabama and SIUC
Rejected from: Cornell, Michigan, Iowa, Michener, Florida State

This decision has actually been made in my mind for awhile. I think once I made the decision, financial fears just set in and now I'm a little terrified of all of this. But I've found that I MUST do the things that I am most afraid to do. This will be another one of those things. Besides, getting THIS particular degree at THIS particular school has been my dream. Now is not the time for me to start doubting that.

Thanks for all the help and support everyone. I'm not going anywhere, I could use more support lol and I love giving it. I can't wait until this thread starts filling up!

Congratulations with your decisions, unsaid78 and Khalilah! I'm very excited for you both -- Indiana has an absolutely gorgeous campus, and I'm frightfully jealous of their emphasis on diversity in their MFA program. I have no doubt you guys will have a wonderful time there; Indiana is lucky to have both of you as parts of their program.

Thanks so much moocow and My Fiction Twin!

I looked back at my first posts on this forum and I had to smile. I came on the forum with guns blazing on the diversity issue/Indiana a little over a year ago, not knowing this would be my personal outcome. I was right about one thing--I don't doubt the deservedness of my acceptance(s) for a second.

Good luck everyone!

Congrats jamie!
Have you let the other programs know you're not attending? (I'm on Mich's waitlist and can't stand the suspense.)

Baltimore's a great city...I'm inclined to say that you should visit Annapolis as much as possible too. It's really beautiful, especially in the fall. Especially, also, in Western MD, a few hours drive away. That's where I'm from :)

I have sent emails to the program directors letting them know my decision. I sincerely hope you get a spot, nickagaudio. And it's probably important to let everyone know I write poetry.

Hi unsaid and Khalila. I had to decline the great offer I got at Indiana. I'm glad some happy poet will be made happier by removing myself from the list. Sorry that I could not join the sisterhood with you. I've narrowed down to two decisions. We'll see! Good luck everyone!

OSU 4 Me!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

After receiving a few more rejections this week (Brown, Indiana, Washington), it became clear that the program that has always been my first choice was my first acceptance, and that my experience with the faculty, students and staff of that program had only further ingratiated them in my mind as the place I belonged, as the program I wanted to be at. Therefore, I have decided to accept my offer at Ohio State University for the MFA in poetry. In doing so, I am declining my offer at the University of Florida (a truly wonderful program) as well as my spot on the waitlist for the University of Wisconsin. After toiling away at undergrad for the past four years, praying that I might be lucky enough to get into an MFA, I am finally here! My dreams come true! (How maudlin can I get?)

Good luck to all of you as you continue waiting for more news and, hopefully, decide where you want to go!

All of you guys are wonderfully awesome for being considerate enough to not only turn down spots, but to do so early enough that the people on the other end (waitlist people, second / third round acceptance people) will not have to remain in limbo. I salute you and hope to follow your example. Cheers.

At the risk of provoking more steam out of you, I should say that more often than not, nature will take care of itself. I've had many setbacks in my life without which I could never have arrived at the place I'm in now. No, not a cardboard box off 19th & Main Ave (near the liquor store) living within inches from a grocery cart. Heavens, no.

Let's take my high school prom, as an example. I had three potential dates. "Potential" is the operative word here. I asked my first choice pom-pom girl Candace Adderley and she turned me down with a "What? No, that won't work." Depressed, I turned to sweet-as-nectar Vickie Netherby and she said she already had a date but that I was "so sweet for asking." Finally, desperate, I asked plain jane Maggie Gustafson who said, "Thank you, I'd love to go." Well, we had a great time and Maggie and I eventually became very good friends. The following year, she blossomed into this babe and we became closer than ever. By the time of graduation, I couldn't believe she was my third choice a year ago because life was so great with her. In fact, I couldn't even remember why I ever asked Candace and Vickie in the first place.

Declining? [In reply to] Can't Post

Are any poets around here considering declining a spot at Ohio State? I'm on the waitlist and just curious as to my chances of actually getting in. If you'd rather not post here, PM is fine!

Thanks!

Hi Nick,

I think I know one person who might be declining the offer, although she's a girl and I have this funny feeling that most programs try and keep it gender balanced. That could just be in my head though. Anyway, that's all the info I have.

Unsaid,

I'm so glad to hear how everything worked out for you! I had to step away from the boards for a bit... rejections piling up and too much work to do for me to moon about on the internet. I've Pm'd you with a bit of good news that finally came my way... Best wishes, M.

In Reply To
That's what I've been doing, and it's seemed to work fine. If you have a phone number they gave you, that might be good too. I don't know what the true etiquette is, but I figure if they can accept you via email or phone, it's OK to decline via email or phone too. And yes, I think this faster way is better for those who might be on a wait list!

In Reply To
Who did people contact to decline offers at programs? I know you can just say no by sending in the paperwork, but as a courtesy since others are waiting (and programs are anxious to confirm incoming students), I thought I should email the person I've had the most contact with from the program (i.e. program director or program assistant). Is that okay?

In declining, should you mention where you decided to go?

The first time I declined, I was asked where I decided to go. They said they like to track that type of thing. So in subsequent declines, I just told them where I decided to go and why ("I've decided to go to Indiana due to the opportunity to complete a dual degree").

I actually got pretty encouraging responses from the schools I declined regarding my choice so I don't believe it hurts and I think they appreciate it.

Decision [In reply to] Can't Post

I have decided to accept the offer at Penn State. I emailed the director today and told her, and I'll mail my paperwork tomorrow. I've been mostly decided for awhile, but visiting this past weekend was the final impetus for my decision. I think it will be a great fit, and I am so excited about everyone I met - faculty, current students, incoming students, everyone!

(for the record, I declined offers from West Virginia and the NEOMFA through Cleveland State today, and had previously declined a waitlist spot at Minnesota. I was rejected by Michigan, Wisconsin, Alabama, and Colorado State)

ETA: I'm poetry
