Re: [kbritten] UT AUSTIN [In reply to] Can't Post

With the exception of the schools you listed, kbritten, I could have written almost your entire post. Including the 0/11 number.

I'm considering BGSU's online workshop. Any thoughts, anyone? I was thinking of the one that begins in February, but I thought it would look odd since I applied there.

Ahem, I have to reply to my own post, since Florida is still and really has always been (aside from my Catholic fantasy of going to Notre Dame) my first choice. That last post made it seem like I would choose those other schools before Florida, and quite frankly, Florida's tops for me. I would recommend it to anyone :)

Assuming this is the MAR workshop, I signed up for it, and awe just circulated our first set of stories. The writing quality is very high. Later this week, I'll find out how the critiques and discussion go.

So far, I'm very happy.

Cheers!

Awesome! If you wouldn't mind writing me a time or two to let me know your take on it, I'd really appreciate it. I'm over at MFA Blog and read what you post, so I trust your judgment. Perhaps you could send me private messages so we don't clutter up the misery here.

Purdue [In reply to] Can't Post

I just saw on the blog that Purdue's acceptances went out on Feb. 12... I had no idea they had even happened!

Re: [kbritten] Syracuse [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm with you, kay. Just got my "no thanks" email from Syracuse and I must say... I'm glad I have the Speakeasy and the MFA blog. I think this rejection would be more painful if it was less-expected.

This was my first actual rejection, and is 1/4 for implied rejections.

...Now I just have to tell my father (who works at SUNY-Upstate) that I def. won't be moving up there :(. He's rather out-of-sync with the whole MFA acceptance atmosphere, no matter how many times I explain my odds... He bet me Mets tickets that I would get into 7+ programs. I took the bet (duh) without telling him I had a bet with my roommate over my getting into one program (she'd owe me dinner if I didn't, I owe her dinner if I did) and another friend of mine if I hear "yes" from 3+ (if not, she owes me Vietnamese). Heck, I think the last two are pretty much in the bag too.

I too got my Syracuse rejection today. I must say that the wording was particularly hurtful. Being that these people are in the creative writing department, I have to think they know what they're doing when they write it that way.

Anyway, I'm still waiting to hear from 5 schools (not including assumed rejections) so here's hoping. I'm crossing my fingers for everyone.

Are you all poetry or fiction?

I'm kind of bummed. Haven't heard from Syracuse or any other schools (save WashU and Wyoming). Clearly, I'm not accepted, as I never got a call, so I'd much rather just get the email. :P

Good luck to all!

I received my Syracuse rejection today, too. I did think that it was poorly worded. It's the first school I've officially heard from out of 10 and a pretty disappointing way to start. I'm assuming rejections from Vanderbilt and Michigan, since I haven't heard anything from them yet.

You guys are making me very curious. If it's not too painful to cite: what is the regrettable wording on the Syracuse rejection?

I am writing to let you know that we have not been able to recommend you for admission to the Masterís of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing at Syracuse University.

This is a complicated judgment which depends a great deal on the abilities and opinions of those instructors here who must be able to feel that they could clearly serve the development of your writing. Their consensus not to recommend admission to the program should in no way be interpreted as a discouragement of your writing.

I know this news disappoints you, and I want to express my sincere best wishes for success in your alternate plans for graduate study. Thank you for your interest in Syracuse .

I got rejected too... it didn't bother me much. They took 12/500. I don't see what the problem is. The wording is a bit formal/stuffy ("discouragement" and the like). Eh, there is nothing offensive or hurtful about it.

Thanks. I don't think it would have hurt my feelings, but it's oddly awkward and clunky coming from a bunch of writers.

I didn't get into UC San Diego. It didn't hurt too much since it was my 5th choice school, but it did discourage me about my chances into getting into choices 1 through 4. Because if my stuff wasn't good enough there, who's to say it would be good for somewhere like UC Irvine?

raynold, you can never tell with things like this. I have a friend who was accepted into Iowa and not accepted into many of her "safety" schools, so it really depends a whole lot on the personal preference of the school. Good luck!

I was rejected from Hunter College, which was my number 4, but waitlisted at UNCW, which was my number 2... it REALLY depends on who is reading your stuff. A friend of mine was rejected from all of her back up schools, but was admitted to Iowa 2 years ago... i really think its pure luck.

I hope you get lucky! :)

UNM [In reply to] Can't Post

Got a very dry and impersonal rejection letter from UNM in creative nonfiction today. I'm actually sort of offended. Cheap paper or not, Iowa's NWP rejection was kindly worded and made it seem like they really wished they could offer admission to more people. How hard is it to write a decent rejection letter that makes the recipient feel that their time and effort and money have not gone completely down the toilet?

I can't say I'm too crushed since I had my reservations about the program, but it never feels good to be rejected. Still waiting to hear from my first choice, UA. If I don't get in there, that's the end of this application season for me. I may or may not apply again next year.

Broke down and called Notre Dame and found out that I was not admitted. I didn't ask if other notifications went out, but if someone really wants to know their status there, calling may not be a bad idea, the lady called me back within a few hours. Bummer though!

Considering that UF has notified acceptances and UNCG has sent GNE, the only school I have left is Florida State. Here's to next year!

Re: [kbritten] UNM [In reply to] Can't Post

AND that makes me 0-10-1 (one waitlist at McNeese). I called Florida State and the lady told me that all acceptances have been notified already, but that waitlisted individuals will be notified anywhere between now and April 15th (sort of like the cable guy saying he'll be there anywhere between 9 AM and 5 PM). So, while I do not have definitive word from UF and UNCG (whom I will call tomorrow), I will most likely be roundly rejected with the exception of one waitlist (good thing I ended up appyling there!). I knew this would be a possibility, but it really sucks. At least I can move on. Don't know what I'm going to do with my life now. I've become a little addicted to both the MFA blog and this forum, it's going to be tough not checking it every five seconds for information.

I wish I had some words of advice to future applicants, but from what I hear, it is pretty normal to be roundly rejected the first go-around, so I guess my only advice would be that shit happens. I will most likely apply next year, but who knows what will happen? My writing sample didn't suck and I still got rejected everywhere, even from some lower tier schools. So... don't know what to say.
