I'm not sure why they list that criteria on their website; I think some of the people who were there when I was fit the profile, but several did not. I think they go primarily off the writing sample, just like most programs. Oh, well. Their loss if it deterred you.

Congrats Trisina. USF is a great school My mom attended and I use to love their campus as a child. Which location?

It's in Tampa. I'm really excited, but I've never been there. I'm visiting the school so hopefully I can gain a little insight on the program/city/people.

I should've posted my acceptance, but I didn't know about this blog at the time. Do you think it matters that I was accepted awhile ago?

Unfortuneately I know nothing about the MFA program. But I remember them having a great supportive environment for the arts in general.

Finally got my "no, thank you" from Syracuse. It took so long to get here I was starting to hope I was waitlisted. Syracuse: Boo, you whore.

What do you think the chances are that all Hollins admits will turn down their offers, freeing up funding for a waitlister like me? :)

They are selling GS cookies here on campus this month but I still haven't seen any of them ... a friend of mine picked me up a box of Tagalongs so I need to get those from her stat! :)

Same here, except it was for Indiana University. Rejection via snail mail. Always knew it was going to be a rejection, but that little voice in the back of my head kept saying, "waitlist... please!" Anyway, going to grab some hot wings tonight -- I'll be sure to eat enough to satisfy the Acceptance and Rejection Gods for a more promising day tomorrow!

I never buy girl scout cookies. They never have the sugar-free kind. Also, I always believed that the women (mothers, actually) were really running the show and the girls themselves weren't that into it. So, why bother? The last thing I wanted to do was please a bunch of parents. And who knows what kind of people these mothers really were? Oh, golly, if I run into another mother driving around in a van or SUV, I'll go insane! Plus, the lack of the sugar-free variety, as I said before.

Went to the mailbox and there it was, all alone, the Syracuse letter. I picked it up and flipped it over, ready to rip it open. A giant roach was hanging off the back.

I took it as a bad sign.

And to the cockroach story - ick! But I was never a fan of Syracuse (the area) at all. Last I visited (few years ago when I used to sing and went out there for a christmas gig) it was a depressed town. Sad and lonely with high rates of crime. So maybe it was a Syracuse Roach?

What interest might a roach have in a creative writing program's notification letter? Such a letter seems remarkably devoid of a roach's primary interest in life -- eatables. Thus, it strikes me as suspicious. Perhaps the roach, like many of us nocturnal pariah-types living on the fringes of society, dreams too of making an artistic contribution through literature, and you startled him as he was researching. :)

I'm kind of glad to hear that. My advisor is an alumna of the Syracuse program and she wanted me to apply and I kept on resisting -- Just didn't take to what I saw on the website and G-- knows I didn't need to be in any depressing cities.

Well, inspired by your post, I checked with the girl scouts. They happened to be selling girl scout cookies near the library in my city. They did indeed have chocolate chip sugar free cookies. However, they said they started selling the sugar-free variety only a year ago.
